Narrative
Story of Lake Toba
Once upon a time, there was a man who was
living in north Sumatra. He lived in a simple hut in a
farming field.
They did some gardening and fishing for his
daily life.
One day, while the man was do fishing, he
caught a big golden fish in his trap. It was the biggest
catch which he ever had in his life. Surprisingly, this fish
turned into a beautiful princess. He felt in love with her
and proposed her to be his wife. She said; "Yes, but you
have to promise not to tell anyone about the secret that I
was once a fish, otherwise there will be a huge disaster".
The man made the deal and they got married, lived
happily and had a daughter.
Few years later, this daughter would help
bringing lunch to her father out in the fields. One day,
his daughter was so hungry and she ate his fathers
lunch. Unfortunately, he found out and got furious, and
shouted; You damned daughter of a fish. The daughter
ran home and asked her mother. The mother started
crying, felt sad that her husband had broke his promise.
Then she told her daughter to run up the hills
because a huge disaster was about to come. When her
daughter left, she prayed. Soon there was a big
earthquake followed by non-stop pouring rain. The
whole area got flooded and became Toba Lake. She
turned into a fish again and the man became the island of
Samosir.

she asked Bawang Merah to do household chores. She
refused and asked the old woman to give her a big
pumpkin. The old woman then gave her the big one.
Bawang Merah was so happy. She ran very fast.
When she arrived home, her mother was impatient. She
directly smashed the pumpkin to the floor. They were
screaming. There were a lot of snakes inside the
pumpkin! They were really scared. They were afraid the
snakes would bite them. "Mom, I think God just
punished us. We had done bad things to Bawang Putih.
And God didn't like that. We have to apologize to
Bawang Putih," said Bawang Merah. Finally both of
them realized their mistakes. They apologized and
Bawang Putih forgave them. Now the family is not poor
anymore. Bawang Putih decided to sell all the jewelries
and used the money for their daily lives.

Jonah
Once upon a time there was a village in North
Israel. All the people lived peacefully there. One of them
was Jonah. Jonah lived with his parents. They loved him
very much. In the north of Israel was Syria. It had
powerful knights. They were very cruel and liked to
invade other countries.
One night when the people of Jonahs village
were sleeping, the Syrian knights attacked his village.
They burned down the houses. One of them threw a
torch into Jonahs house. Jonahs house was on fire.
Jonah and his parents avoided the fire burning their
house. They saved themselves by climbing a ladder to
the upstairs. It was too high for them to jump down to
the ground from the upstairs. Jonahs father took a rope
to get down from the stairs to the ground. They escaped
to another village.
One day, when they were fishing in the sea,
Jonah fell into the sea. Jonah was drawn into the sea. A
whale came closed to him. He tried to swim avoiding the
whale as fast as possible but he failed and at last the
whale swallowed him. Jonah was still alive in the
stomach of the whale. He prayed to God to be released
from the stomach of the whale. Fortunately God granted
his prayer. The whale came closed to an island. It opened
its mouth and Jonah came out from its stomach.

Fish and Fisherman
Once three fish lived in a pond. One evening,
some fishermen passed by the pond and saw the fish.
This pond is full of fish, they told each other excitedly.
we have never fished here before. We must come back
tomorrow morning with our nets and catch these fish!
So saying, the fishermen left.
When the eldest of the three fish heard this, he
was troubled. He called the other fish together and said,
Did you hear what the fishermen said? We must leave
this pond at once. The fishermen will return tomorrow
and kill us all!
The second of the three fish agreed. You are
right, he said. We must leave the pond. But the
youngest fish laughed. You are worrying without
reason, he said. We have lived in this pond all our
lives, and no fisherman has ever come here. Why should
these men return? I am not going anywhere my luck
will keep me safe.
The eldest of the fish left the pond that very
evening with his entire family. The second fish saw the
fishermen coming in the distance early next morning and
left the pond at once with all his family. The third fish
refused to leave even then. The fishermen arrived and
caught all the fish left in the pond. The third fishs luck
did not help him. He was caught and killed.

Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight
wonders of the world. It was built by a Muslim Emperor
Shah Jahan in the memory of his dear wife at Agra.
Taj Mahal is a Mausoleum that houses the grave
of Queen Mumtaz Mahal.
The mausoleum is a part of a vast complex
comprising of a main gateway, an elaborate garden, a
mosque (to the left), a guest house (to the right), and
several other palatial buildings. The Taj is at the farthest
end of this complex, with the river Jamuna behind it. The
Taj stands on a raised, square platform (186 x 186 feet)
with its four corners truncated, forming an unequal
octagon.
The architectural design uses the interlocking
arabesque concept, in which each element stands on its
own and perfectly integrates with the main structure. It
uses the principles of self-replicating geometry and a
symmetry of architectural elements. Its central dome is
fifty-eight feet in diameter and rises to a height of 213
feet. It is flanked by four subsidiary domed chambers.
The four graceful, slender minarets are 162.5
feet each. The central domed chamber and four adjoining
chambers include many walls and panels of Islamic
decoration. Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble.
Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate
description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj
seems to glow in the light of the full moon. On a foggy
morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if suspended
when viewed from across the Jamuna river.

Controlling children using computer
Computer and internet are useful as well as
powerful. Information about health and safe usage of
computer and Internet, especially for children, should be
owned by each family. Computer connected to internet is
powerful way to socialize with others. It can be good but
also bad effect. Recently we hear a lot of children get the
advantage of social networking sites but we often see the
news about the disadvantage of it for children. Healthy
and safety of computer and Internet usage should
continue to be campaigned.
The role of parent in assisting and directing
children in using computer is very necessary. Installation
of software monitor such as key logger which has
function to watch and note all activities relating to
keyboard usage is helpful but not enough to protect
children from potential harms. Children tend to hide
what they have done in front of the computer to their
parent. They see that all of they have done are their
privacy and no one may know.
We can not prevent children from using
computer because it is multifunctional. However, many
parents worry about what their kids do in front of the
computer; whether they are doing homework or even just
playing games. Or spending all time to surf internet
which is the materials do not fit with his age. There is a
tendency, especially teenagers, want to become
acquainted with many strangers out side. The lack
parental supervision of children's activities is likely to
pose a potential danger to them. So parental monitor
against the use of computers needs to be done from time
to time.

Learning English
Why is Learning English Important? Language
is the mean of communication. Mostly groups of society
have their own languages. Some of them appear the top
global languages. Most people in the world hear about
English, Arabic, and Mandarin. However English is the
most global spoken language. Then if a man wants to
catch a global goal, he has to master English.
Everyone recognize that English is an
international language. English is used in writing and
speaking by many people all over the world. It can be
either as a first or second language. We even hear
British, American, Australian, and even Singaporean
English. Those various names of English are used as the
first language in those countries.
Furthermore, some countries have their own
languages as a mother language but also use English
mostly in daily communication. Besides usage in daily
interaction, English is also used as a key to open doors
leading to scientific and technical knowledge. No
wonder we find manual guides and instructions of many
devices written in English. Even if we have a pack of
instant noodle, we will see the cooking instruction also
written in English. This transfer of science and technical
will include many countries in economic, social and
politics development.
Finally, the most easily seen in the importance
of learning English is that most top requirement in filling
job opportunities is the ability using English; active or
passive. Job applicants who master English are more
favorable than ones who do not. The above facts prove
that everybody needs to learn English if he likes to greet
the global era.

Online job
Online jobs are selected in part-time
employment for many, and some have taken more
seriously. A growing number of people are willing to
take a job online. Working online has its advantages if
we manage effectively. Why not?
It offers flexibility and convenience that no
other job can give. We can work from home with
minimal investment and get a good income. The idea of
adding weight to our pocket and makes life easier and
comfortable is the most reassuring.
The reason behind this great opportunity is that
every day there are new companies to join. Every day
and every minute men are seeking information about
everything under the sky of the Internet.
As we know, the Internet is the answer to every
question, web sites need to update each section and also
add reports on developments that have recently joined.
Therefore, it is an expansive space for articles.
here is a number of jobs we can work online.
T
Some of them which strongly recommended are writing,
marketing, stock trading, and online education. However
we should be very careful because scamming
opportunities are always there.

Bear killed old man at yellow Stone Park
A grizzly bear killed a 57-year-old man hiking
in Yellowstone National Park with his wife Wednesday.
It's the first fatal bear mauling in the park since 1986.
The bears involved in Wednesday's encounter
have not been captured, and park officials said they did
not immediately have enough information to determine
what measures, if any, they might take in the aftermath
of the attack.
According to the AP, Yellowstone National
Park is home to at least 600 grizzly bears, though some
say the population is over 1,000. While the attack is the
first fatal mauling in the park since 1986, it's the third in
the region in little over a year.
A National Park Service statement said the
couple surprised the mother grizzly while with her cubs,
and that the grizzly fatally mauled the man in "an
attempt to defend a perceived threat to her cubs."

Report
Mangrove
A mangrove is a tropical marine tree.
Mangroves have special aerial roots and salt-filtering tap
roots which enable them to thrive in brackish water.
Brackish water is salty but not as salty as sea water.
Mangrove trees are commonly planted and found in
coastal areas. Mangroves can serve as walls of protection
for natural disaster in coastal area like tsunami.
According to BBC News, healthy mangrove forests had
helped save lives in the Asia disaster tsunami and people
tended to respect these natural barriers even more,
especially after the tsunami.
There are several species of mangrove tree
found all over the world. Some prefer more salinity,
while others like to be very-close to a large fresh water
source such as river. Some prefer areas that are sheltered
from waves. Some species have their roots covered with
sea water every day during high tide. Other species grow
on dry land but are still part of the ecosystem. The Times
of India reported that rare species of mangrove had been
found and was also known as the looking-glass tree,
probably because the leaves are silver-coated.
Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leave
above the surface of the water. Yet they also need to be
firmly attached to the ground so they are not moved by
waves.
Any part of root that appears above the water
flows oxygen to the plant under water surface. as the soil
begin to build up, these roots procedure additional roots
that become embedded in the soil.

The increasing employment of Indonesian
women workers comes mostly from middle-and-upperincome families. This is because many of them have got
higher education. Today more than half of all women
college graduates are employed, compared to four out
often high school graduates, three out often elementary
school graduates, and only two out often among those
with less than grade five in school. Most of the working
girls in the 1980s were unskilled, but today's working
women have considerably more education than those
who do not work. Among the working women only three
fourths are high school graduates and less than 10
percent have not been to high school at all.
Most well-educated middle class working
women hold white collar or professional jobs. Although
many other kinds of work are offered to college
graduated women, clerical work and teaching are mostly
preferred. About three fifths of the girls who are
graduated from high schools take clerical jobs.

A Trip to Snow Mountains
When my family was living in Sidney, we used to
go to a place called Snow Mountain because Sydney
never has snow in winter. Well, the weather can get very
very, very cold, and the temperature could go as minus 5
degrees Celsius, but it never snows. That was the reason
why we liked going to Snow Mountains.
Our first trip to Snow Mountains was very
exciting. We went with a group of foreign students from
different parts of the world. We went by bus to Canberra
and then we went up to the mountain. And believe me,
you need to be an expert driver because the road was
rough and wet. We had to go very slowly and cautiously.
Luckily, our driver was a real professional. He did
a great job taking us to the mountains, but I saw many
good cars sliding off the roads. The police were made
busy by those accidents, but the police seemed to have
anticipated the situations. They had all kinds of
equipment to help the poor cars.
When we reached the resort area, a nice warm
meal was waiting in a nice and warm dining room. It was
a relief. Then we had to hire the Snow-Mountain gear
like caps, scarves, thick jackets, and snow boots. We
simply had to do that or we would have been freezing to
death. I felt really big and fat in that outfit and I had to
do learn how to walk in snow.
The most exciting part was the toboggan ride.
Toboggan is basically a fiberglass board designed to
slide down the snowy slopes. So I climbed up the hill
and then I sat down on the toboggan. I held on to ropes
to steer and slid down the hill. It turned out that my
steering ropes weren't tied on correctly, so I could not
control my toboggan property. I slid down really fast
without being able to control where I was going. So I
ended up plugging into a freezing cold creek!

The Jaguar
Although a jaguar does not live in Asia, it is
famous there because there is a car named after the
animal. It can be stated in some points.
The jaguar belongs to the cat family. It is one of
the four big (roaring) cats along with the lion, the tiger
and the leopard. Because it has spots, a jaguar is often
mistaken for a leopard. However, a jaguar has larger
rossete markings, a stronger body and a short tail. The
jaguar is brownish-yellow in colour and has spots on the
head.
Jaguars live in a variety of locations. The rain
forest and wet grasslands of Central and South America
from the habitat of the jaguar.
The jaguar is an excellent hunter. While the other
three roaring cats kill their prey by biting it at the neck,
the jaguar kills its prey by biting it through its skull. It
usually kills small animals for food but can attack and
kill cattle or deer.

The empire was ruled by the Sapa Inca, Lord of

The Incas had no written language. Information
was recorded on knotted strings called quipus. These
were also used as calculators. Strong and healthy young
boys were chosen as chasquis or couriers to carry

Technique of Teaching
The Silent Way is one of the effective language
teaching techniques. It is pedagogical approach to
language teaching based on the premise that the teacher
should be as silent as possible in the classroom (about 90
% of the time). The learners, then, are encouraged to
produce as much language as possible. They have much
time both to be exposed to the language and to perform
practice.
The learning hypothesis behind the Silent Way is
that learning is facilitated if the learners discover or
create rather than remembers and repeats what is to be
learned. Also, students learn more effectively through
problem solving involving the target language. It views
language learning as a creative problem-solving and
discovering activity in which the learner is a principal
actor rather than a bench-bound listener.
Basically, in learning teachers prepare their
students to have problem solving skill. And the Silent
Way can be described as a problem-solving approach to
language learning, and is summed up nicely in Benyamin
Franklin's words: Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I
remember. Involve me and I learn.
I conclude that the Silent Way is an appropriate
language teaching technique.

THE LION AND THE MOUSE
Mr. Lion was lying asleep when he was suddenly
awaked by a mouse running over his face. The little
mouse was being chased by a wild cat. "How dare you!"
he roared, and raised his paw to kill the mouse. "Please,
sir, begged Miss. Mouse, "let me go, and one day I may
do something for you in return. "You help me! Ha
ha., "laughed Mr. Lion, but he let her go.
One day, Mr. Lion was caught in a net by hunters,
"I can't get out!" he roared angrily, "But I can help you,"
said a tiny voice. Then Miss. Mouse nibbled and gnawed
the ropes until the lion was free. "There", she said
proudly, "if you had not let me go, I would not have
found a way to help you. "Yes, you should thank her,
Mr. Lion. She has saved your life", said a monkey who
was sitting on a branch of a tree.

Although gorillas look ferocious, they are really
rather quiet apes. They live in family groups in the
thickset parts of the jungle.
A gorilla's feet, hands, and wrinkled face are bare
and black. His fur may be short or long, depending on
where he lives.
The short-haired gorillas lives in the hot, damp,
tropical forest of western Africa, and the long-haired
gorilla lives in the cooler air in the high mountain of
central Africa.
A gorilla's arms are so long; they almost touch the
ground, even when he is standing up.
Some wild mountain gorillas weigh as much as
you, your father, and your mother all weigh together.
At night the father gorilla sleeps on the ground.
But the mother and the baby gorillas sleep in a big nest
of made sticks and leaves on the ground, or in the lower
branches of trees, where they are safer from prowling
animals.

Birds belong to a class of warm blooded
vertebrate animals with feather covered bodies. Next to
mammals, birds are the most important groups of landliving vertebrates.
All birds have feathers, although in some types,
particularly those that cannot fly, the normal structure of
the feathers may be much modified and be downy,
wooly, or straw like. The forelimbs of birds are modified
into wings. The bony part of the tail, except in the very
earliest fossil birds, is very short, and the visible tail is
composed of feathers only. The teeth are absent except in
some fossil forms.
As in mammals-the only other group of warmblooded animal-the circulation is highly perfected so that
there is no mixing of material of arterial and venous
blood, but the arrangement of veins and arteries by
which this is accomplished, is different in two groups.
Birds have keen hearing, although they have no external
ears. The sense of sight also is very keen, but the sense
of smell is weak or lacking, except few vultures and
other birds.

Do you want to buy a mobile phone? Don't be
hasty. There are many things to consider. Be reasonable
before making a decision.
First, you can start by asking yourself the
usefulness of the equipment. The question might be, "Do
I want it for prestige or its usefulness?"
Then you should make a choice on the type of
mobile phone. There are various choices in the market,
so you should decide the one that meets your needs and
whether you can afford it or not.
The consequence of using a mobile phone is its
high operational cost. You have to pay more for mobile
phone compared to a fixed telephone. Therefore you
should only use the mobile phone only for important
talks.

What Causes Weather
Weather is the physical condition of the
atmosphere at a particular time. It includes
temperature, air pressure and water content, known as
wind. Winds are formed when the cooler air moves in to
replace the rising warm air. Warm air is usually less
dense than cold air; therefore, it creates low air pressure.
Cool air is more dense and creates high air pressure.
Usually we have fine weather when the air pressure is
high and there are clouds, rain and snow when the air
pressure drops.

Once upon a time there was a fisherman armed
with his fishing rod who would make his every day from
his village to the river bank. There he would wait
patiently for the fish to bite. As soon as he had caught

"Excuse me, but I've been observing your unusual

"And why on earth should I want to wait around

"Fore fish to take the bait."
"But I only need three fish. There are only there of

"And you've never thought of trying to catch more

"What for?"
"To sell, so that you could buy nets and a fishing

"What for?"
"So that you can buy a bigger house and then may

"What for?"
"So that you could have other things, be very rich

Text
It is commonly observed during the rainy season
that water falling on roads and streets disappears after a
few hours. Similarly, in summer, wet clothes dry up very
soon. Do you know where this water goes? This water
gets converted into vapor is called evaporation.
How does evaporation take place? Every
substance is made up of very small particles called
molecules. These molecules are held together by strong
forces of attrition called cohesive forces. These forces
are opposed by the repulsive forces due to the motion of
molecules. As long as the cohesive forces are far greater
than the repulsive forces, the substance remains in the
solid state. When the substance is heated up, it absorbs
heat energy which the molecules area set up in rapid
motion. This motion starts counterbalancing the cohesive
force. When the repulsive force generated by the motion
of molecules equals the cohesive force, matter changes
from solid to liquid state. If the liquid is still heated, the
molecules still move fast. When the force exceeds the
cohesive force, the molecules of the liquid become free
and escape into the air. It is how the liquid is converted
into vapor. The liberation of the molecules from the
liquid surface to the air is called evaporation.
This explains the drying up process of clothes. If
the wet clothes are put under the sun, they dry up faster
because at the rate of evaporation increases with the rise
in temperature. It takes place more rapidly when the air
is dry. That is why clothes dry up more quickly on a dry
than on a damp cloudy day.

Slang is definitely a way to distinguish you as part
of a group or separate from another group. Teens use
slang to show their independence from their parents, and
give them and their friends a language they can call their
own. Slang sometime allows them to communicate
without outsiders understanding, or to show off that they
belong to a particular group. Teens like to use slang
words for several reasons.
Firstly, they use slang to show their individuality.
Daily teen conversations can be incomprehensible to
many parents and adults. Influenced by MTV, hip-hop
culture and the popularity of e-mail, teenagers shorten
words, stretch definitions and pronounce term with a
different style. The way talk shows their confidence.
Secondly, they use slang because it is easier to
say. They might talk the way they do with word
like"coz" for"because" and "holla" for "hello" and other
expressions because the words are cool and easier to use,
not because they are lazy.
Finally, they use slang for speed and usefulness,
and little humor of the day. Slang flows quicker than
standard language. Slang can color their vocabulary and
sentences, so that they don't seem boring.
Thus, from the reasons above, it can be concluded
that teens use slang words because using their own terms
is the easiest way to make the world of their own.

In total, the plant has need of at least 16
elements, of which the most important are carbon,
hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur,
potassium, calcium, and magnesium. The plan obtains
carbon and hydrogen dioxide from the atmosphere; other
nutrients are taken up from the soil. Although the plant
contains sodium, iodine, and cobalt, these are apparently
not essential. This is also true of silicon and aluminum.
Overall chemical analyses indicate that the total
supply of nutrients in soils is usually high in comparison
with the requirements of crop plants. Much of this
potential supply, however, is bound tightly in forms that
are not released to crops fast enough to give satisfactory
growth. Because of this, the farmer is interested in
measuring the available nutrient supply as contrasted to
the total quantities.

Oil, like coal and natural gas, is a fossil fuel.
Fossil fuels are made from the remains of dead plants
and animals. It is thought that oil comes from tiny plants
and animals whore bodies fell in their millions to the
seabed when they died. There they were covered by sand
and mud, which later hardened into rocks. In the course
of millions of years, the plants and animal material
underwent chemical changes and eventually turned into
oil.
Oil deposits lie hidden deep beneath the surface
of the earth. They have to be searched for. Unless the oil
actually comes to the surface, it is impossible to be
certain that any is present. The rising demand for oil
products keeps the oil companies busy exploring new oil
fields, and drilling new wells. Exploration teams are sent
to distant regions to search for oil. If the exploration
shows good results the company decides to drill a well.
Thus the exploration phase ends, and the production
phase begins.
Crude oil has to be transported to refinery to be
made into the many products that are useful to man, such
as petrol, kerosene diesel oil, lubricants, asphalt. Further
processing gives aviation fuel, greases, fertilizers,
insecticides, man-made fibers and many other things.
The oil industry has a very complex and
widespread distribution system. Ocean tankers, pipelines,

Born in East London, Beckham was raised in a
family of Manchester United supporters, with both his
parents traveling to Old Trafford from London to see the
team's matches, often taking young David with them.
Getting the taste of soccer, David started playing for the
Ridgeway Rovers, a youth team coached by his father
and Steve Kirby.
Although taking part at several trials at the
Manchester United youth facilities, he had some tries at
his local club, Leyton Orient and Tottenham Hotspur,
however he would come back to the Manchester United
youth in 1991.
After playing there for 1 year and winning the
FA Youth Cup with the team, David Beckham was given
the chance to play for Manchester's first squad, in a
League Cup game against Brighton and Hove Albion,
which would be his first appearance as a professional
soccer player.
When he was just 19 years of age, Beckham
was still not a first team regular for Manchester, so in the
1994/95 season he was loaned to Preston North End,
where he would get some useful match experience before
returning to United the next season. The end of the
1994/95 season saw several key components of the
Manchester United first squad leaving the team or
retiring and Sir Alex Ferguson, the team's manager
decided to base his strategy for the next season on
youngsters instead of buying expensive replacements.
This was a great chance for David Beckham and he took
it with both hands as he would become a first team
regular from now on.
Constantly rising in form and playing better and
better for Manchester helped David Beckham reach the
England squad for the 1998 World Cup, however this
would be one of the toughest moments in Beckham's
career.

made from huge stones. These were cut to fit perfectly
together so that no mortar was needed. Their rope
bridges were so strong that even a horse could gallop

Higher Education for women
In this modern era still some parents who are
reluctant about sending their daughters to college. The
narrow attitude shown to womens education is largely
due to the traditional role of women in society. A woman
is expected to be a wife and a mother. Most parents
believe that if their daughter gets married and chooses to
be a housewife, then the higher education will be a
waste. However, an educated woman is not only a better
wife but also contributes something to the society.
Nowadays, more and more women are
successfully combining their career and marriage.
Educated women are richer both emotionally and
financially. They are able to find an outlet for their
monotonous drudgery of their housekeeping. They bring
more satisfaction and contentment to their lives.
Depriving girls of higher education is crass
discrimination. Times have changed; modern society
needs the talents of its people regardless of gender.
Today, women work alongside men. In fact, in the last
few decades, women have made outstanding
contributions to society.
Women should be given the freedom to be
educated whether or not they get married or go to work
after finishing their education, because it is only through
education that a woman will find her self useful and
discover what she wants in life. A woman who works is

There are a lot of discussions as to whether
children should be given homework or not. Some people
claim that children do enough work in school already.
They also argue that children have hobbies that they
want to do after school, such, as sports or music. A
further point they make is that a lot of homework is
pointless and doesnt help the child learn at all.
However, there are also strong arguments
against this point of view. Parents and teachers argue that
it is important to find out whether children can work on
their own without the support from the teacher. They say

Once upon a time there lived as neighbors, a
bear and a rabbit. The rabbit was a good shot, and the
bear, being very clumsy, could not use the arrow to good
advantage. The bear would call over the rabbit and asked
the rabbit to take his bow and arrows and came with the
bear to the other side of the hill. The rabbit, fearing to
arouse the bears anger by refusing, consented and went
with the bear and shot enough buffalo to satisfy the
hungry family. Indeed, he shot and killed so many that
there was lots of meat left after the bear and his family
had loaded themselves, and packed all they could carry
home. The bear was very gluttonous and did not want the

youngest child was very kind to the rabbit. The mother

always gave him an extra large piece of meat, but the
youngest child didnt eat. He would take it outside with

would give the meat with such a great kick, that it would

I was challenging to visit different refugee to find soft

It was heart breaking when I saw these

fearing that the internet connection would come crashing

And after everything was done, only then I

find food. You had to travel quite far, about a 30-to 45minute trip by car to find fresh food.

Nobody likes paying taxes. Even those who
know that taxation is necessary and just are reluctant to
pay taxes. It is not pleasant to see part of your monthly
income taken away from your income tax. Ignorant
people think this is injustice and make grievance of it .
Every country must have a government. The
primary duties of a government are to protect the life and
property of the citizens, to maintain law and order, and
settle dispute between citizens in a just and orderly way
through the law-courts, to defend the country from
foreign foes and to maintain the roads and highways.
Besides, many governments maintain and direct
education, provide hospitals for the sick and attend to
sanitation. All these great public duties need money: an
army and navy have to be kept up, the police force and
the judges have to be paid.
Furthermore, schools and teachers have to be
provided and supported; health experts officer and
sanitary engineers have to be employed. Now where is
all from? For the benefits of the public. It is the people as
a whole, rich and poor that benefit by security of life and
property, by the sound roads by public hospital, public
school and good sanitation. Therefore, it is only right
that the public, the individual citizens of the country
should contribute the money needed: for the money they
give comes back to them in the form of these public
benefits which all enjoy.

also do not have bathrooms or electricity. In additions,
the air of Mexico City is dirty and unhealthy. The smoke

Before gold and silver were bought to Europe
from the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in Latin
America during the sixteenth century, inflation had not
been a major problem. Since that time, however,
inflation has been a significant economic issue,
especially during and after wars.
Currently, in many countries of the world, people
are facing problems caused by inflation, which is a
decrease in the purchasing power of money because of
continuous rises in the price of available goods. There
are two different kinds of inflation, each of which can
effect peoples lives. When inflation is discussed, people
generally refer to an increase in price, wages, and the
amount of money circulation in a countrys economy.
The most common type of inflation because there is
steady but manageable increase in the rate of inflation
within a year.
Prices rise continuously so that workers ask for
higher wages to cover the increasing costs of housing,
food, and transportation. Although such wage increase is
inflationary, they are often unavoidable. As result, a
government may have to impose price and wage controls
in order to control this type of inflation. A less common
type of inflation is called hyperinflation, which is usually
due to war or occupation by a foreign country. During a
period of hyperinflation, price levels double rapidly. As
there is too much money available in the economy,
currency decreases in value, and people lose confidence
in their governments financial competence. To win back
the trust of people, the government may create a new
currency

Have you ever wondered how people get
chocolate from? In this article we'll enter the amazing
world of chocolate so you can understand exactly what
you're eating. Chocolate starts with a tree called the
cacao tree. This tree grows in equatorial regions,
especially in places such as South America, Africa, and
Indonesia. The cacao tree produces a fruit about the size
of a small pine apple.
Inside the fruit are the tree's seeds, also known
as cocoa beans. The beans are fermented for about a
week, dried in the sun and then shipped to the chocolate
maker. The chocolate maker starts by roasting the beans
to bring out the flavor. Different beans from different
places have different qualities and flavor, so they are
often sorted and blended to produce a distinctive mix.
Next, the roasted beans are winnowed. Winnowing
removes the meat nib of the cacao bean from its shell.
Then, the nibs are blended. The blended nibs
are ground to make it a liquid. The liquid is called
chocolate liquor. It tastes bitter. All seeds contain some
amount of fat, and cacao beans are not different.
However, cacao beans are half fat, which is why the
ground nibs form liquid. It's pure bitter chocolate.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or
ASEAN is a regional organization formed by the
government of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,
Singapore and Thailand. It was formed through the
ASEAN Declaration or as it is a more commonly known,
the Bangkok Declaration. This was signed by the
Foreign Ministers of ASEAN countries on 8 August
1967 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The aim of the organization is to have a close
cooperation among the member countries on an equal
basis. This would bring mutual benefits and stimulate
solidarity that will promote peace, stability and
prosperity. ASEAN also aimed at maintaining external
relation with similar aims; we have ASEAN-Australia
economic
cooperation,
ASEAN-US
economic
cooperation, etc.
From the very beginning, ASEAN was set up as a
regional organization for economic, social, and cultural
cooperation. In addition to these general goals, ASEAN
also aims at collaboration in the fields of agriculture,
trade and industry, transportation and communication.
Politically, ASEAN also aims at keeping Southeast Asia
neutral, so that it remains a Zone of Peace, Freedom and
Neutrality. The Kuala Lumpur Declaration, signed on
27 November 1971, is the most significant document in
the development of ASEAN. The ASEAN Secretariat
office is located on Jln. Sisingamangaraja Jakarta, and its
main task is to be responsible for the effective
implementation of ASEAN projects and activities. This
office was set up in June 1976 based on the Agreement
on the Establishment of the ASEAN Secretariat signed at
the Bali Summit Conference in February 1976.

Indonesian people in general have a desire to be
governmental workers because they consider that being a
governmental worker means life and better future for the
retire age. The problem is are there quite a lot of
occupations to be governmental workers? People often
disappointed because they fail to meet what they have
been expecting that is to be opportunities to work in the
governmental office.
Actually, working opportunity is not only to be a
governmental worker. If we desire of being a
governmental worker, we may be disappointed, because
the vacancy of being a governmental worker is limited.
The men who want to work are much more than the
vacancy available. Even it is also difficult to get a job.
We find quite a lot of people who get better life
and job in private companies. Most of them find good
position such as a clerk, a manager, a banker, a
technician, a director, etc.
Because of the difficulty in getting a job, a man
should create opportunities for employment for himself
and others. We may call them entrepreneurs. They
build either being big or small private companies.
Through this way, much more people will have
opportunities of getting jobs.

Plantations is an estate on which cotton, tobacco,

of the land or large area of land, often with a house.
The production of an estate crops rubbers, oil palm,
sugar can, coffee, tea, and cocoas a long, hanging history
in Indonesia. Today, these crops still figure prominently
it in the countrys economy. Estate crops cover
approximately 4,5 million has or more than 20% of the
countrys agricultural land. They are produced by a small
plantations, plus government and private estates. Rubber
is the biggest land user followed by coffee, oil palm,
sugar can, tea, and cocoa. All of these crops have a
widespread distribution pattern, especially in Java and
Sumatra. Oil palm is particularly concerned in North
Sumatra and coffee in south Sumatra, Lampung,
Bengkulu, and East Java. Sugar can is found
predominantly in East and Central Java. Much of the
rubber is planted in Sumatra and Kalimantan, cocoa in
North Sumatra, East Java and Southeast Sulawesi.
Indonesia is the worlds second largest rubber
producer after Malaysia, producing approximately 1
million tons per year. More than 2 million families are
working in the field of rubber, involving 10 to 12 million
persons who depend on the product for their earning.
Oil palm is being expended rapidly in many new
areas. Palm oil is also a major item used for cooking in
Indonesia household. Oil palm plantings in Indonesia are
almost entirely concentrated in North Sumatra.
Two types of tea are produced in Indonesia black and
green. Most of the farmer is exported, while the latter is
produced mostly by small plantations and processed

COMMUNICATION SATELLITES
Astronauts have journeyed off the planet earth and
out into space. Ventures into space have led to the latest
tool into long-distance communications the
communication satellite. The satellite is equipped with
the radio receivers and transmitter. Rockets boost it into
orbit, and the force of gravity keeps it from flying off
into space. The communication satellite is the earths
captive, circling the planet in space. The satellite acts as
a television relay station. Engineers on the earth bounce
television signals off it at an angle, and the signals come
down at a different angle to receivers on another
continent. Television signals are blocked by mountains,
the earths curvature, or sometimes by building.
Therefore, they have to be relayed from one transmitter
to another in order to travel long distances. In 1962, the
first important United States communication satellite,
Telstar I, was placed in orbit. Television engineers in
Europe bounced a picture off Telstar, and viewers in the
United States saw it. For the first time people sat at home
in New York and watched something happening in
London or Paris at the moment it took place.

A DEMAND FOR WORKERS
If a builder is going to build a factory around your
dwelling house or in a certain area in the suburb, it will
surely need a lot of workers. It means a lot of workers
have good chance to apply for the jobs. The factory
needs a lot of skilled labourers. They are in great
demand.
For those who are still jobless they can contact the
office under the Depnaker in their respective areas. Or
they can contact the bureau that organizes the applicants.
This bureau is privately run. Most of the applicants are
high school graduates. They are placed in department,
institution, factories, schools and tourist agencies. They
are workers. They are lucky and feel satisfies they can
get new jobs.
Workers receive payment in the form of wages
and salaries. Farmers, doctors, lawyers,, and owner of
businesses are usually self-employed. Only a few of the
working people are self-employed. Labour-both the
workers and the labour movement is tremendously
important in the worlds economy. In a true democracy
labour is free. Workers cannot be forced to take jobs or
work for an employer if they dont wish to. They can
quit if they feel they are not paid enough.
As workers are in demand, they must work hard,
for example, for the department store. The workers must
be faithful to their manager and so must the manager to
the workers. He must be faithful to his promises and
word. There is no necessity for the manager to treat the
workers cruelly. The relation between employer and
employees must be good.
They must be workers compensation. Workers
compensation means payments and medical help given
to workers who are hurt on the job and pension given to
dependent (keluarga tertanggung) in the case of a
workers death. In most countries employers are required
to take out insurance policies to cover their responsibility
to the workers.

One upon a time there was an office worker
whose name was Charles. He worked in the same
insurance office for many years. But during that time, he
became more and more unhappy. While he worked, he
dreamed constantly, and in his dream he was always a
hermit, he stayed in his room. He didn't like people. He
especially didn't like people when they talked. He
wanted peace and quiet. Life went on for Charles in this
way
until
he
became
desperate.
His big opportunity came when he learned about a sea
voyage the two of his friends were planning. They
expected to make the trip during their summer vocation.
Charles asked to join them. While they were sailing, our
hero talked to his friends about the joys of hermits' life.
He talked until he finally convinced them and they
decided to stop at the First Island that they found.
A few days after this decision, they saw the island in
the distance where they decided to live. Before they went
ashore, Charles asked the other two make a promise not
to say a word after they reached the island. They were to
remain perfectly quit during their stay.
During the first few days after they landed, they
built a little house where they planted a garden. The
island was paradise for Charles because this was the
peace and quiet that he wanted.

We don't live in an age of miracles, but sometimes
they happen. This was a special New Year's Eve Miracle.
Elizabeth Barret lives near a shopping center, and
sometimes she and her sister, Barbara, play near the
stores. They like playing there. There are lots of people
there, and she and Barbara like to look at the things in
the windows.
But the lives of children are not sweet. They are
full of fears. Children attack and chase other children.
Why? Who knows? But it's true. And it's true in
Smithtown, too.
Elizabeth is eleven years old and isn't friends with
bad children. She doesn't fight. Her mother says so. And
one New Year's Eve, Elizabeth and her sister, Barbara,
are playing near the stores, but they have to stop.
"Elizabeth," says Barbara. "Let's go home. Do you see
those girls over there? They go to my school. They are
bad.
But it's too late. The bad girl chases Elizabeth and
Barbara. They start to run. "Hurry, Elizabeth. Let's run
across the railroad tracks. Hurry up."
The trains on the Long Island Railroad are always
late. It is a fact of life on Long Island. But the 1: 05 out
of Ronkokoma was on time the New Year's Eve.
Vincent Lobianco was at the railroad station, 150
feet away from Elizabeth and Barbara. "Don't cross the
tracks. Go back!" Mr. Lobianco is a religious man.
"Please, God, no. Don't let it happen." he shouts. But it
does. Engine #4321 was on top of Elizabeth in two
seconds. Mr. Lobianco runs towards the girl, and at the
same time, shouts to a taxi driver at the station. "Call
ambulance. Call an ambulance. There is a little girl on
the track."

The statue of liberty is one of the first sights to
welcome immigrants arriving in the United States,
national monument proclaimed in 1924. Located in New
York City, the monument consists of two small islands,
Liberty Island and Ellis Island that lie in Upper New
York Bay. The statue of Liberty is located on Liberty
Island; Ellis Island was once the location where most
immigrants entered the United States.
The statue of Liberty is a monumental sculpture
that symbolizes freedom throughout the world. Its
normal name is Liberty Enlightening the world. The
statue depicts a woman escaping the chains of tyranny,
which lie at her feet. Her right hand holds a loft of
burning torch that presents liberty. Her left hand hold a
tablet inscribed with the date "July 4, 1776" (in roman
numerals), the day the United States declared its
independence. She is wearing flowing robes and the
seven rays of her spiked crown symbolize the seven seas
and continents.
The statue of Liberty is 46 m (151feet) high. Its
base and pedestal increase the height of the monument to
93 m (305 feet). The surface of the statue is composed of
hammered copper sheets 2.4 mm (0.01 in) thick that are
riveted to an iron framework. The iron frame was
devised by French engineer Alexander Gustave Eiffel,
who also built the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The statue rests
upon a concrete and granite pedestal designed by
American architect Richard Morris Hunt. A star-shaped
wall surrounds the 47 m (154 feet) pedestal. This wall
was part of Fort Wood, which was built in the early 19th
century to defend New York during the war of
1812(1812-1815).

Bees are flying insect that are found all over the
world. There are over twelve thousand different species
of bees, but only two thousand of these are found in
North America.
Bees can be divided into two groups according to
their living styles. Solitary bees live alone. On the other
hand, social bees, like ants, live in groups. Only about
six hundred species are of his social category.
Social bees are interesting because in their
"society" there different classes of bees. Each class
performs a different task. Queen bees lay an egg.
Workers, underdeveloped females, work in the hive but
never produce. Males do not work: their only task is to
mate with the queen.
Solitary bees occur as males and females. Every
female makes a nest after an egg is laid and put in a cell,
the female also add some pollen and honey for food.
Then she seals the cell. The females then go else where
to build a new nest or die. When the eggs hatch, the
larvae will feed on the pollen and honey which the
female left for them.

Silkworms live for only two or three days after
laying eggs. About 36.000 to 50.000 eggs are laid, and
these are carefully stored at the silkworm farm until they
are ready to hatch. The eggs hatch into caterpillars,
which feed on mulberry leaves. Soon, the caterpillars are
ready to spin their cocoons. Not all caterpillars can spin
silk cocoons. Only the caterpillars of silkworm moth
known as 'Bombyx Mori' can do such spinning.
This caterpillar has special glands which secrete
liquid silk through its lower lip. The caterpillar makes its
cocoons using these strands. The threads on the outside
of the cocoons are rough, while those inside are soft and
smooth.
Some fully-spun cocoons are heated. This kills the
pupa inside. The cocoons are then put into hot water to

Mr. Smith Blunders
Have you ever been invited to a party by an
unknown host? You met strange guests, too. It is rather
ridiculous of course.
Mr. Smith is a well-known in Washington because
of his many social blunders. He always likes to attend
various social functions because he wants to expand his
circle of friends. Whenever he is invited, he goes, unless
he
is
ill.
Recently he received an invitation to a fashionable
banquet. Although he did not know the hostess, he
accepted the invitation. He was secretly very pleased,
because he felt that his reputation as a desirable guest
was growing.
When he arrived at the banquet hall, he found that
about one hundred people had been invited. He began to
move around the hall. He spoke other guest about
whether he knew them or not. He soon realized that he
had never met any of the other people present, although
they seemed to know each other.

For many years people believed that the cleverest
animals after man were the chimpanzees. Now, however,
there is a proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than
these big apes.
Although a dolphin lives in the sea it is not a fish.
It is a mammal. It is in many ways therefore, like a
human being.
Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to
talk to one another. It may be possible for man to learn
how to talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because
dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds man can make.
If a man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have
to make a third language which both he and the dolphins
can understand.
Dolphins are also very friendly toward man. They
often follow ships. There are many stories about guiding
ships through difficult and dangerous water.

TEXT I
Cameroon is a West African country of ten
million people which has been very successful in
growing food for its people, unlike many other West
African countries. Since 1971 it has doubled its output of
major foodstuffs such as maize and potatoes. Now it is
one of the few African countries able to feed itself. This
was not the case five years ago when the country was
only 75-80% self-sufficient in food. Although isolated
pockets of hunger still remain, the World Bank
nowadays gives Cameroon money to sustain, not to
achieve, self-sufficiency in food production.

Continued progress in advanced technology is not
necessary. Already the technical progress in our world
has caused severe pollution in the air and in the water.
Although the technical progress in previous years has
been helpful, recent technology has significantly
increased pollution. Another reason to stop technical
progress is that many inventions which were developed
for good causes are now also used for powerful weapons
or have been found to have serious side effects. For
example, pesticide put inside particle board to prevent
termites has now been found to be toxic to human life.
Technology does not always bring good effects; for
example, computers do much work faster than man, but
then man loses is job to a machine. Because no man can
guarantee that technology will have only good effects
and will be used only for the benefit of man, we should
delay the continued development of technology.
TEXT III
A natural disaster is a terrible accident, e.g. a great
flood, a big fire or an earthquake. It usually causes great
suffering and loss of a large sum of money. The
casualties are injured or died. Some people are homeless
and need medical care.
Floods occur when the water of rivers, lakes, or
streams overflow their banks and pour onto the
surrounding land. Floods are caused by many different
things. Often heavy rainstorms that last for a brief can
cause a flood. But not all heavy storms are followed by
flooding. If the surrounding land is flat and can absorb
the water, no flooding will occur. If, however, the land is
hard and rocky, heavy rain cannot be absorbed. Where
the banks are low, a river may overflow and flood
adjacent lowland.
In many part of the world flood are caused by
tropical storms called hurricanes or typhoons. They bring
destructive winds of high speed, torrents of rain, and
flooding. When a flood occurs, the destruction to
surrounding land can be severe. Whole villages and
towns are sometimes swept away by water pouring
swiftly over the land. Railroad track blocked and
uprooted from their beds. Highways are washed away.
When a building caught fire, the firemen pitched
in to help battle the blaze. Before the pumps were
invented, people formed bucket brigades to fight fires.
Standing side by side, they formed a human chain from
the fire to nearby well or river. They passed buckets of
water from to hand to be poured on the flames.
The damage of the fire did depend a great deal on
where it happened. In the country or a small village, only
a single house might burn down. But in crowded cities,
