Sua Eccellenza Mons. Filipe Neri Antnio Sebastio do Rosrio
Ferro, Arcivescovo di Goa e Damo, presenta brevemente la
biografia del Beato che viene proclamato Santo:
Joseph Vaz, born of devout parents at Benaulim, in

Goa, India on 21st April 1651, was ordained a priest
of the Archdiocese of Goa in 1676. He joined a small
community of Indian priests in 1684 and helped to
found the Oratory of St. Philip Neri. Fr. Vaz, on hearing of the plight of the Catholics in Ceylon under the
Dutch persecution, came over disguised as an ordinary
labourer, in 1687. With Kandy as his headquarters, he
laboured for 24 years to rebuild the Church in Sri Lanka. His life was characterised by burning love of God,
heroic charity and an unquenchable thirst for souls.
Worn out by his missionary labours and afflicted by
illness Fr. Vaz died on 16th January 1711 in Kandy.
Saint John Paul II beatified him on 21st January 1995
on his visit to Sri Lanka.

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring
good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, Your God reigns! Listen! Your

The Lord is my shepherd;
he leads me to green pastures.

From Miletus Paul had the presbyters of the church at

of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers,
in which you tend the church of God that he acquired
with his own blood. I know that after my departure
savage wolves will come among you, and they will not
spare the flock. And from your own group, men will
come forward perverting the truth to draw the disciples
away after them. So be vigilant and remember that for
three years, night and day, I unceasingly admonished

Heavenly Father, we the People of Sri Lanka pray earnestly for our
beloved Holy Father Pope Francis, who presides over this Eucharistic Celebration here in our midst. Grant him physical, spiritual

Heavenly Father, bless all leaders of the Catholic Church in Sri
Lanka. Help them to lead their dioceses with a Christ-centered
spiritual vision, and guided by the life-example of Saint Joseph Vaz,
direct them to work for peace and the progress of the Church and
the whole nation, we pray to the Lord.
4. Let us pray for the sick and the differently able

brethren.
Heavenly Father, we earnestly place before you the
suffering, pain and sorrow of all sick people and those
who are differently able. Let the all-powerful healing
hands of your Son be extended over them so that the
prayers we utter in faith on their behalf may bring them
healing and consolation, we pray to the Lord.
