AND ITS GOING TO BE A REALLY BIG SHOW.

By estorey

The first FL Festival of ARTS will be held on Saturday August 8th. And its going to be a "really good she-ow" as Ed
Sullivan used to say in the old days!
Members of the Fraser Lake Arts Festival have been planning this event for over a year, with an expectation of
hosting an informative and entertaining day ripe with eye candy and vocal novelties. The goal of the committee is
to grow the Festival into a two day event in the future, with music, art exhibitions, workshops, childrens programs
and many other fun interactive activities. Because helping families grow is one of their goals, all activities can be
enjoyed by the whole family.
It will be well worth attending to listen and watch the onstage performances, view the gorgeous paintings, woodworking, glassware, memory canvases, quilts, fabric arts and other wonderful creations. Not only are spectators
welcomed, but its hoped they will take part in the variety of workshops for both children and adults.
And the music line-up is great. There will be an opportunity for dancers to twirl, for writers to read, for musicians to
strum and for vocalists to sing.
On the grounds and inside the arena, look for writers and artisans to have either a tent or an indoor space for books,
photography, pieces of art and jewellery and other sundry stuff. The work on display will feature original pieces from
local artisans as well as the work of regional and provincial artists.
There may even be a guitarist strumming mellow tunes in the background while writers perform their work on stage.
If you are someone wishing to take part, there are application forms to fill in as the list of performers is great.
If you have problems using a microphone, the best ever advice. "Get close up to the mike - almost as if you were
going to swallow it," For those who've not read aloud previously, it's most important to read your lines slowly (and
loudly) - articulate each word with increased emphasis wherever it fits in with the rhythmic structure of the poem.
For other poems you need to increase the tempo. And If it's "slam" poetry get into the action with body language. Practicing in front of a mirror and/or into a recording device and listening to your performance helps. It will
help develop confidence. The most important thing of all is: do not mumble.
Festival organizers are inviting - "Anyone with homemade food and baking is asked to set their tent at the Festival of
Arts for FREE. A vendor booth for artisans is $25 (outside on field), and exhibitor booth is $50 (inside arena)
The Festival goes from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 pm. Please be prepared to be there all day. It will be a fun day so come
prepared to enjoy yourself, hawk your wares and connect with people. Please bring your own tent and outdoor
chairs plus all the signage and backdrops needed to showcase your work.

JULY contribution .
Okay, so life goes on....
Whats for breakfast? I suppose one should have protein. Whats in the fridge? Aha eggs! But I hate eggs. I spot the buttend of a loaf of homemade bread purchased at one of the Friday afternoon markets. I carve off two slices and dip them
in beaten egg diluted with & cream. Fry them up brown and eat them topped with gobs of butter and rhubarb
sauce. (Wished I had some whipped cream.) I wash it down with coffee made in my one-cup coffee maker. Nice healthful breakfast.

Time to check the blood pressure: Doggone good numbers if I do say so myself! My doctor would be proud.
Exercise options: To strut across the highway to fetch the newspaper or dance aerobically to music in the bedroom?
(Winding up your clock, as my husband used to call it.)
But first Ill phone my brother and listen to some guy talk. He tells me about his latest attempt to slim down Rusty his
aging, obese dog. Its called No Calorie Dog Food. Its twice the price of ordinary dog chow but money-back guarantee if dog wont eat it. And he has a fish story to tell.
The fish arent biting much lately, he tells me. But he did have a big one on the line awhile back. Almost had it to the
boat when a loon swam over, dived down after the fish and took it to the bottom of the lake. The line broke and needless to say, my brother went home fish-less.
That reminds me of a time when we were fishing on Hallett Lake. An eagle swooped down from the sky, scarfing up my
husbands catch of the day. The swoosh of its big wings startled me so much I almost fell out of the boat. Husband
laughed about that one for days!
Its too nice a day not to be outdoors. Besides, I need to weed and water my garden box. Last summer the deer came
and clear-cutted most of the greenery. This year Ive been spraying with a mix of hot sauce, garlic, egg and cayenne
pepper. Seems to be working.
Ive decided to keep my husbands scooter. Im practicing for my old age, I tell people when they ask about it. Who
am I trying to kid? Ive already got most of the symptoms. Anyway, today I am boldly driving it all the way down to the
Park to take a stroll along the lakeshore. I manage to avoid the joggers, trains and automobiles and park in full view of a
beautifully matched 4-horse team thats being hitched to a covered buckboard. Amazing how the horses have been
trained to back up so nicely in unison! Its the Fraser Lake Sawmills Picnic and I assume the buckboard will soon be
loading up passengers to follow the roadway and admire the view.

On my stroll I notice the size and quantity of the Saskatoon berries. Tis a good year for the berries. And its a good day
for me. I am invited to enjoy a hamburger. Now, I dont have to cook anything for lunch!

COMMUNITY GARDENS
COMING ALONG
By estorey

FLESS staff member, Isabel Smith has been breaking

ground at the high school and preparing it for
planting. Her plan to build a Community Garden plot
in the high school grounds met a small roadblock
last summer with the teacher lockout which made
the garden plot difficult to access.

In June before school was dismissed for the summer

holiday, Smith planted a few of the raised beds and
had students cut more wood to build more garden
beds in the future. Hoping for help with the project,
she approached the right person when she asked
Lynn Clark to look at the garden spot.
Lynne has now taken charge of the community garden and with a few volunteers have put together
the previously cut lumber and built them into boxes.
Lester Lepoidevin from Lepoidevin Greenhouses
brought in five loads of soil and filled the newly built
planters taking from clean, empty boxes, to instant
garden spots.
Lynn purchased seeds with a 60 day or less growing
time as the micro climate created by the three cement walls n the area, should produce great crops
and keep them free of frost into September.
Garden enthusiasts are encouraged to attend a
meeting on Aug 6 at 4:45 at the garden site to discuss how to move forward into the next growing
season.
The Community Garden not only provides people a
spot to harvest some vegetables or herbs, but provides a social opportunity for those wishing to get
involved. There is also a green house on site. Lynn
says, It would be nice if we could get some raspberries and strawberries transplanted onto the site
ready for next year and some perennial flowers to
brighten it up and attract bees.
Lynn can be reached at 690-8282 for more info.

ENDAKO THIS AND THAT

BY AUDREY READ

My "Pet Peeve" of all time, I am sure is the potatoes that we buy in the stores now days! When I was a kid my
Dad grew potatoes commercially and it was one of my jobs to "sort" them after school...I was always glad when
that job was finished! The potatoes that we threw into the cull bin are about all that we see in the stores today! I
suppose they send all the good ones to foreign countries? You buy a ten pound bag of spuds & half of them are
thrown out! When we sorted the potatoes anything with any kind of blemish went into the cull bin and sometimes
if they were too small, into the seed bin. I am always really sorry when our own potatoes run out in the spring!

Dadburn heifers got out this morning ...had to go for a walk before my coffee! I am sure it is the steer that is with
them that is leading them astray! Sure glad they are a quiet bunch as we were able to get them where we wanted them without much trouble! ..AND on foot too ...as the two horses look over the fence thinking what a pair of
old fools we are when they could be doing the work! LOL!

Went to the Farmer's Market in Fraser Lake on Friday...man what a lot of good stuff they have for sale! Why you
can get farm grown beef, pork or fresh eggs. Then there is a lady selling fresh baked goodies like bread, tarts &
cookies or you might want to get some home made jam to go with your bread or buns. There is jewellery, popcorn or cotton candy too ...just whatever your little heart desires! Bought some face creams etc. from Tamara
Ketlo, "NATURAL OBSESSIONS" she makes her own products and are they ever good! Makes my skin feel so
nice & smooth and fresh, thanks Tamara keep up the good work! Her "black soap" is wonderful too!

Started making silage today, June 30, it will make great feed & we should get a second crop on the irrigated
fields depending on the weather, been several years since we have cut three crops but with the price of hay so
high and a shortage of it maybe it would be a good year to try for it again. Planted my third planting of radishes
today and also put some strawberry plants in the ground, I think the soil is way too rich but I guess we will
see! Got lots of greens now, spinach, Swiss chard & beet greens, taste is wonderful! Had a little cauliflower yesterday too, things are really producing already! Got all the green onions bent over so the growth will go into the
bulb so I planted another hundred this morning so I'll have green onions for salads for awhile longer.

Traded Art & Jo-Ann, (Savory Farm) some fresh vegetables for some pork fat...I am rendering it out so I will have
some lard to rub on the horses & donkey's to keep the flies away...works like a charm, you never see flies bothering a pig! What I don't need I am going to take out and give to the coyote, she has a litter of pups & is finding it
hard to feed them, maybe if we feed her she will leave my chickens & dog alone! A. & J. have a water hole for
their pigs to wallow in, you should see them...just like a bunch of kids playing in a mud puddle! It is a blast to
watch them!

Haying is in full swing, went to Prince George the other day, lots of hay down or baled, some crops are very
good and some not worth a hoot! Well that is the way it goes I guess!

Do you have any idea how many babies a squirrel has?...Well, one had her nest in a bale of twine in the baler so Walter took it all out and moved nest, babies & all to a spot near-by where she would hopefully find
them. The next morning he went to check on them and sure enough she had moved all six of them to a new
spot!. ...Just what we need is six more squirrels! LOL!

When I was headed into Fraser Lake the other day...hotter than the hubs
of hades it was too ...I met a couple heading west on their bikes...peddle,
peddle and I thought they must be nearly dying of the heat! I stopped
and bought them some ice cold water and chased them down ...they
were very grateful for the water! The lady was from Idaho & the fellow
from Montana, they are headed for Alaska and enjoying the scenery as
well as the wildlife. They were not expecting such heat! So far they have
been fortunate to view several bear, both black & grizzly and of course
deer & moose, saying the animals had all stayed near the bush! Not the
way I like to take a holiday! But, hey ...to each his own! I wished them
luck & we were all on our way.

It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you of Walter's passing. He was
haying all day Friday July 10th, came in, ate supper, had a glass of wine,
went to bed and just never woke up. A terrible shock to us all but WOW!
What a wonderful way for him to depart this earth. His work is done, he
has no more pain and he will forever be up there in heaven just dreaming about Red Angus cattle and farming!

Rest in Peace WALTER

You Deserve it

Tryathalon raises awareness of Juvenile Diabetes

On a blustery Saturday, July 18th, White Swan Park was the site of a race, a bike ride and a kayak race. While the events didn't all
take place at the park, they began there and ended there as well.
The 4th Annual Try athalon was once again a challenging yet fun event to participate in.
Two men, sixteen women and ten children took part in the event some participants
were responsible for performing all three challenges, while others joined teams and
were personally responsible for only a portion of the race.
At the registration table there was an Intention Board where people could choose their
individual intention from the list..you could run 10k,20k or 24 k/you could pick
different length rides for the bike race and also in kayaking.
Many of the women who participated belong to coordinator Donya Nicols Boot Camp,
Learn to Run Club or her Death By Donya Class. This is the fourth year that Donya has
organizied this Try athalon which is a fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes. While times are
recorded during the event, the Try athalon is not considered a race. Everyone who participates, does so to keep fit and to have fun.
Donya has family members with diabetes and knows first hand the trials and tribulations
of monitoring glucose and maintaining normal insulin levels by juggling food intake with
exercise.
Diabetes is a disease that affects how the body uses glucose, the main type of sugar in the
blood. Glucose comes from the foods we eat and is the major source of energy needed
to fuel the bodys functions.
