Energy Future,
What is in your
future?

Why the pressure on energy

use will not go away
World energy consumption has risen 45% since 1980. It is projected to be
70% higher by 2030.
Emerging markets (including China and India) account for more than 75%
of new demand placing new pressures on global resources. Meanwhile,
mature markets such as North America, Europe and Japan will also face
increased demand and limited resources. These mature markets will
continue legislating to reduce consumption, shift to alternative energy
sources, and improve energy security.
Increased resources competition and political instability will cause oil and
natural gas prices to remain at or above current levels for the foreseeable
future. Coal will continue to be a cheap and plentiful resource especially
in emerging markets. This will maintain pressure on reducing emissions
and sustain the need for global climate change actions.
More than ever, global warming is at the top of the agenda. Environmental
concerns and public opinion on climate change will drive continued actions
by legislators, opinion leaders, and special interest groups forcing industry
to respond.

The trends we see now will continue for the next 25 years.

Capricorn Haus (Dusseldorf- Germany)

Graceful curves
and a striking facade enclosing large glass lobbies,
dene the compelling style of the 26,000 square
meters of the CAPRICORN HAUS ofce building in
the Dsseldorf Media Harbor.
The premise behind the entire project was to
create a low-energy building that would be
ecologically friendly, energy efcient and contained
design aesthetics that would stand the test of
time; a building that would continue to offer the
most up-to-date convenience for the owners and
tenants throughout the buildings useful life.
In order to guarantee the buildings economic
efciency, the owner, architect and planner took
a lifecycle view from the very beginning. Over
a buildings lifecycle, investment costs account
for roughly 30% of the total, and consequential
costs for 70%, with a large portion of this money
going for energy costs. So from the start, the
project needed to have a signicant focus on
energy efciency, energy optimization and the
effective interaction of all components used, while
leveraging complimentary and existing resources:
Energy requirements of 65 euro cents/m2 per
month or a further 20% below the requirements

How can I optimize my energy consumption and spending?

Diagnosing energy consumption and

cost allocation is a key rst step to achieve
reduction.
Energy Use Analysis solutions provide the
means to understand energy consumption of
all relevant utilities (Water, Air, Gas, Electricity,
Steam). Cost allocation and sub-billing reports
enable building or factory owners to hold tenants
and cost centres more accountable for energy
costs. Subsequent actions can reduce overall
energy usage by 8 to 10%!
In addition, minimizing risk and maximizing value
through secure stable electricity contracts
is a high priority for energy managers and
executives.
Energy Tariff Optimization solutions can
have signicant impact on overall utility costs.
Businesses can optimize the cost of their energy
if they have the knowledge and expertise to
negotiate advantageous supply agreements.
Maximum savings can be gained with strategies
to fully leverage the best available tariffs.

Energy quality
with power factor
correction and
harmonics filtering
Most utilities have specic policies for billing
for reactive energy. Price penalties are applied
if the active power / apparent power ratio is not
within the guidelines.
Power Factor Correction solutions modify
and control the reactive power to avoid utility
penalties, and reduce overall kVA demand.
These solutions result in lowering utility power
bills by 5 to 10%.
Harmonics stress the electrical network and
potentially damage equipment.
Harmonic Filtering solutions are a means
to reduce and eliminate the harmonics. They
increase the service life of equipment up
to 32% for singlephase machines, up to 18%
for three phase machines and up to 5% for
transformers.

Power Factor Correction:

Varplus2, Varpact, Varlogic,
Rectimat2
Every electric machine needs active and reactive
power to operate. Power factor measurement
identies the level of reactive power and optimizes
it to minimize cost and avoid penalties. If the
power factor drops below the limit set by the
utility (example in France: 0,92), then the power
factor correction bank modies the level to avoid
penalties. By correcting poor power factor, these
solutions also reduce kVA demand. Reduced
kVA demand results in a 5 to 10%, lower utility
power bill, cooler equipment operation and
longer equipment life. In addition proper power
factor correction helps optimize electrical network
loading and improves reliability.

Integrated solutions
for Pumping stations
and wastewater plants
The electricity bill may reach 1/3 of
operating costs in many water operations.
This level of cost is associated with private
companies, for pumping over long distances
or when the process requires high pressure
like membrane ltration. Hydraulic solutions are
often the first source of economy (reducing
leakage) and electrical solutions are the next
step for more mature customers.
From small pumping stations to high
performance wastewater plants, water
solutions can reduce your energy cost up to
30%. Simply Smart drives, power management
solutions, power factor correction, and Unity
