media The media has a responsible role in educating the community and catalyse
social change. It should find solutions for human rights concerns affecting millions of
deprived, dispossessed and marginalised people.
TIRUNELVELI: The media, which plays a vital role in preserving human rights, should
find the root causes of violations and devise ways and means to prevent abuses,
Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Cynthia Pandian has said.
Speaking at a national seminar on `Media and human rights reporting,' organised by

the Department of Communication of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University here on
Tuesday, she said the pivotal role of media was seen as an essential feedback
mechanism of a democratic system. It reflected the views of the society and
influenced the outcome and direction of debate.
It could influence government policies through editorial comments and response

from readers.
The media could inform its readers about developments within government policy
and it, through responsible reporting and analysis, assisted the setting of acceptable
standard of human rights practices within which the society endeavoured to operate.
"In this background, the media has a responsible role in educating the community
and catalyse social change. Media should create awareness of human rights by
relating them while reporting on violation of human rights and educating public on
human rights. Moreover, media should find solutions for human rights concerns
affecting millions of deprived, dispossessed and marginalized."
In this context, the media, besides bringing out human rights violations, should have
the responsibility to identify the root cause of these infringements while promoting
knowledge through providing information about human rights and finding ways and
means to prevent human rights abuses.
Delivering keynote address, Head, Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Arts,

University of Hyderabad, B.P. Sanjay, appealed to civil rights organisations to closely
work with the media in protecting human rights, preventing infringements, if any,
and creating awareness in the society in this connection to defend the deprived and
marginalised as human rights violations were on the rise in the global scenario.
He noted that the media should not lose its balance while reporting natural and
manmade disasters such as communal clashes as they would accentuate the
problem.
"Even while reporting issues pertaining to naxalites, the media should explore the
cause underneath it," he appealed.
The Head, Department of Communication, MSU, P. Govindaraju, the faculty,
Department of History, MSU, K.A. Manikumar, the director, Vaan Muhil, M.A. Britto,
spoke.
