Basic Steps For Christian Growth

Amazing Grace Discipleship Course - Spiritual Growth

One of the things that God has done for you is that He has made you a brand new person. Jesus
describes it as being "born again," not physically, but spiritually born again. (See John 3: 3-7)
In other words, as you were born the first time a baby, so this time you are born spiritually as
new son or daughter into God's family ( See John 1:12, Ephesians 1:3-8).
It follows therefore that God expects you to grow, even as He shows us in Ephesians 4: 13 ...

“This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith
and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord,
measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.”
Ephesians 4:13 NLT

Do you want to grow to be strong spiritually? If you do, you will need to do
these things:

Go to church
Read your Bible
Obey God's word
Witness to others
Talk with God
Help your neighbour
1. Go To Church

The church is your spiritual family. It is where you fellowship with your brothers and sisters in
Christ. Read and Write Ephesians 2:19 here:

Church is where you learn together, share together, grow together , just as you did in your
natural family. Therefore attach yourself to a good, Bible-based, Christ centered church where
you will hear the Word of God taught. That way you will grow your faith & grow up happy and
knowing that you "belong." Read and Write Acts 2:42 here:

Memory Verse:

Hebrews 10:25 (New Living Translation)

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do,
but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return
is drawing near.

Why You Need A Church Family?

1. A Church Identifies You As A GENUINE Believer.

• “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
John 13:35

2. A Church Family Moves You Out Of SELF CENTERED Isolation.

• “This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for
each other. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is
honored, all the parts are glad.” 1 Corinthians 12:25-26

3. A Church Family Helps You DEVELOP Spiritual Muscle.

• “He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own
special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and
growing and full of love.” Ephesians 4:16

4. A Church Family Will Help Keep You From BACKSLIDING.

• “You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of
you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.” Hebrews 3:13, 13:17
2. Read Your Bible
THE BIBLE – GOD'S LIVING WORD
The Bible is no ordinary book. This is because every other book is written by people, but the
Bible is written by God! So God used holy men to write the Bible, however it was HE who gave
them the words to say! Peter was one of the New Testament writers. What did he say about it?
2 Pet 1:20-21
“No prophecy of scripture came about by the prophets own interpretation. For prophecy never
had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy
Spirit”. Read and Write Isaiah 40:8 here:

Read and Write Proverbs 30:5 here:

Your Bible is food. You can't survive without it, let alone grow! Jot down how God's word is
described as "food" in the following Bible passages:

Psalm 119: 103 _________________

1 Peter 2: 2 _________________

Matthew 4: 4 _________________

Quoted below is 1 Peter 2: 2. In the brackets, add some more words that you can think of other
meaning of the word "crave."

"Like new born babies, crave

(_________________________________________________ ) pure spiritual milk, so that
by it you may grow up in your salvation."

Do you "crave" God's word? Start a daily Bible reading program? Begin in the New Testament
with one of the "gospels" (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John), and in the Old Testament with
Proverbs. After reading the Bible ask yourself these questions:
a. What is the Word saying to me?
b. Is there any sin in my life that the Word I am reading is showing to me?
(If there is sin in your life, repent)
c. Is there any command that I must obey? ( write down this command and obey it).
d. Is there any attitude to change?
e. Is there any promise that God is giving me in His Word?
( memorize this promise because God always fulfills His promises).

MEMORY VERSE
"Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word
that comes from the mouth of God."
(Matthew 4: 4)
3. Obey God’s Word

It's one thing to read God's word. It's another thing to do what it says.
James 1: 25, “But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and
continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in
what he does”.
Nevertheless God expects His children to obey! Also, He has the right as our Father to discipline
us if necessary. (Read Hebrews 12: 5-11) However, a good training is worth everything.
Read and write Joshua 1:8 here:

Study Joshua 1: 8 and list two things which result from obedience to God's Word.

Study Psalm 119:9, and write down what you have learned:

Study John 14:23 and list what you have discovered in the scripture.

Memory Verse:
“If you remain in me and my words remain in you,
ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you”.
John 15:7
4. Witness To Others

From the moment that you were born again it is important that you share your
Christian experience with others. "You are my witnesses ..."
God says in Isaiah 43: 10. Read and write Acts 1:8 here:

You see, God's mission is to bring the good news to this world, but He intends to do it through
you! Read Mark 5:1-20 and Fill in the missing words from Mark 5: 19.

"Go home to your family and___________________________________________________

for you, and how he has had mercy on you."

What does Jesus tell us to do in Mark 16: 15?_______________________________________

What are we called in Matthew 5: 14?_____________________________________________

Why are we to let our light shine? (Matthew 5: 16)

Read and write Romans 1:16 here:

Memory Verse:
For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10

4. Witness To Other’s
5. Talk With God

Prayer is simply "talking with God," You talk to God and God talk to you and listen to Him. It
is a two way communication. Talking to God is necessary in order to get to know Him, and grow
like Him.. If a young person can't relate to his parents it is probably because there was a lack of
communication as a child. It is the same in the spiritual life. God wants you to share a living
relationship with Him as a true Father and Friend. (Look at Matthew 6: 9) That's why prayer
(talking with God) is so important in order to grow. Look up John 1:12 & John 15: 15. What is
our relationship?

Enemy Father Stranger Servant Friend

What was it in Acts 4: 13 which made the disciples so courageous, and stand out from the
crowd?

Therefore, one might ask, how much praying can be too much praying?
Read 1 Chronicles 16: 11 and Ephesians 6: 18 then write 1 Thessalonians 5: 17-18 here:

Read and Meditate Philippians 4:6-7 and write down what have you learned:

Study John 16:23-24, write down what you have learned in the scriptures.

Read and Meditate Mark 11:22-25, And write down what you have learned in the scriptures:

Read and Meditate Psalm 63, Psalm 27: 4-5, Proverbs 8:34-36, Jeremiah 33:3, Matthew 6:33.
6. Help Your Neighbour

Last but not least, we need to exercise our inward experience of faith in outward expressions of
mercy. We don't do this in order to become a Christian. We do it because we already are his
followers and our desire is to grow into Christ's example by reaching out to a struggling world.

Which is the second greatest commandment in the Bible?

(Matthew 22: 36-40)_____________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________

From Matthew 25: 34-40 write down several practical ways that a Christian can love and help his
neighbour.

From your own neighbourhood or work place can you suggest several more practical ways that
you might help your neighbour?

"And who is my neighbour?" someone asks Jesus in Luke 10: 29-37. Jesus answers by telling the
story of the 'Good Samaritan'. Our neighbour is the person in need, who we pass, perhaps every
day, on our journey. Ask God to show him to you tomorrow.
