Key Points
1. Expressions of love is not limited to show affection in the context of a romantic
relationship, e.g. between girlfriend-boyfriend or between fiance (a couple that is
engaged, usually this shows a stronger commitment before marriage). Expressing love
can be said and written to parents, siblings (sisters and brothers) or others that you
care. However, you need to be careful in choosing which expressions suit universal
love and which one that suit romantic love.
2. Expressing relief and pleasure is only appropriate to say or write (perhaps in short text
messaging) when you express it without making others feel down. Sometimes, you
feel happy and satisfied but your friends dont.
Resolution:

solved. It can be a happy ending or bad ending.

RESPONDING TO EXPRESSION
OF LOVE
objectives
In this lesson, you will learn how to respond expression of
love in daily life context.
Let's learn!
Love is an affectionate feeling that everyone has. People are
blessed with various feelings that make them different that other
Gods creation. One of them is affection (caring) or love. People
express love to have a closer relationship or even just to show
that they care to others. You may have at least one experience
when people expressed their love to you.
In a more universal context, love and affection can be expressed
among family members, best friends, neighbours, and fellow
human being. In a specific context, such as a romantic
relationship, it takes place between couples, such as girlfriendboyfriend, fiance, and spouses (husband-wife). Talking about a
romantic relationship, words are sometimes become some
problems if you dont know how to respond properly.
If one confesses his/her love to you, how will your response be?
If the feelings are mutual (meaning that you feel the same as
s/he), what will you say? On the other hand, if it is not mutual,
and if you wish to decline their expressions of love because you
dont have the same feeling, how will you express it?
Some of you may feel confused when someone is expressing
his/her feeling. Here are some phrases you can use to respond
an expression of love, which depends on the context.
When someone is expressing the feeling by giving you a
card or a present to you, you can respond by saying:
Thank you.
I appreciate it.
Thank you very much.
You are so very kind to me.
Those expressions above show that you appreciate him/ her.
Although, it doesn't mean that you simply have the same
feeling. Responses to expressions of love can be divided
into: accepting and declining (refusing).
You can give positive response (accepting) to the other
person what they mean to you by using these phrases:
I love it.
I do, too.
Id love too.
I love you, too.
Im happy to hear that.
While to refuse someones feeling or intention, you can use
these phrases:
Im sorry.
Im sorry I cant.
Im sorry I cant accept it.
Im happy to hear that, but Im sorry.
Its nice of you to say so, but Im sorry I cant.
Do you understand?
Here are some examples to enhance your understanding.
Conversation 1
Friend: How about having dinner together, sometime? Will you
be my date?
You: Id love too. Thank you.
Conversation 2
Adrian: I do really miss you, Dina.
Dina : I do, too.
Conversation 3
(Situation: Derry asked Ersya to be his girlfriend, but Ersya
doesnt have the same feeling.)
Derry: I know we know each other for some time now. Id like to
know you better. Would you like to be my girl?
Ersya: Im happy to hear that, but Im sorry I cant. I just want to
focus studying for now. Lets just remain friends and learn each
other better.
Key Points
To sum up, you have to:
* use the appropriate response to such expressions of love;
* either accept or refuse the expressions of love in a correct
manner.
Lesson
Narrative Text
In this lesson you will learn about how to write a narrative story.
Before we go to the definition of narrative, please recall the
stories you have read. When you were a child, you might be
familiar with stories such as Cinderella and Snow White, or
local stories such as Malin Kundang and Sangkuriang. Some
of the stories were interesting that you remember the characters,
the setting, the conflict, and how they conflict solved. You might
also curious about what would happen next during the reading or
storytelling.
Learning in English in high school will involve storytelling. You
have to be able to tell a story. Although story telling is usually
spoken, in class, you also have to be able to write your own
story. Writing stories can be a hobby or even a job.
At school, you may be familiar with narrative text. Narrative is
basically retelling of something that happened. It also
means telling a story. In short, a narrative text is a written
story. There are many types of narrative text: such
as legend, fable, fairy tale, folklore, and myth. The topics also
vary, such as family, friendship, and the one you are going to
read in this lesson, love.

* Social Function
Narrative is aimed at making readers amused or entertained.
The story is supposed to be interesting. However, it doesnt
always have to be a happy ending story, but it is supposed to
have a moral value.
* Generic Structure
In composing/ writing a story, you will need to create the
storyline first. In narrative texts, you need to follow a specific
organization. There are some parts of a narrative story as
follows:
Orientation:
This part consists of what the story is about, the character(s),
and the place and time where the story happened. (Jack was
poor, Sally was rich, they were best friends from a small town)
Complication:
This is the part where the conflict or problem rises. This one is
also the main point of a narrative story. (When Sallys parents
did not give marriage approval)
Resolution:
This part tells how the problem is solved. It can end with a happy
ending, sad ending, or even bad ending. (Jack went out of town
and went back to marry Sally.)
Re-orientation:
This part is optional. It usually consists of closing statement or
moral lesson. (Now we know that only true love will give us
happiness.)
* Language Features:
Past tense (came, left, went, etc.)
Adverb of time (Once upon a time, A long time ago, One day,
etc.)
The use of conjunction and linking words (When, Then,
Finally, Suddenly, etc.)
Direct speech (I will always love you said Prince Charming)
