We remember
21 trans people have been murdered so far in 2015;
here are their stories and updates on their cases
McCarthy said investigators discovered
that Ziona and LeBlond had known each
other and had been friends since the
two were in middle school. He said the
police investigation also found that the
two appeared to have been in a romantic
relationship sometime after Ziona began
transitioning.
The police charging document led
in court says witnesses told police that
Ziona and LeBlond had been having a
simmering dispute a short time before
the murder. The dispute started, the
document says, when Ziona approached
LeBlond and a group of his male friends
at another shopping center while acting
amboyantly towards LeBlond and greatly
embarrassed him in front of his peers.
The charging document says that upon
learning that Ziona was at the Montgomery
Village Crossing shopping center on Oct.
15, LeBlond, with the help of other young
men with him, lured Ziona to the alley
behind the shopping center. Witnesses
told police that after initially ring a shot
that hit Ziona, LeBlond allegedly walked
over to her, stood over her, and red more
rounds into her body.
Much of the incident, except for the
shooting, was captured on surveillance
video from the shopping center, the
charging document says. It says Ziona
suered gunshot wounds to the head
and groin area.
A trial date for LeBlond had not been
scheduled as of Nov. 16. LC

was shot to death at a Louisville, Ky., hotel
on Jan. 9, by a suspect who reportedly
met her through an online site, according
to one of her friends.
The friend, whose videotaped interview
with police became part of the public
court records, said she and two other
transgender friends who were with
Edwards at the Fern Valley Hotel at the
time of the shooting, believe suspect
Henry Gleaves, 20, shot Edwards because
she was transgender.
Multiple news media outlets have
reported that the friend, who has asked
to be identied only by the name Tiany,
said that Gleaves became angry shortly
after arriving at the hotel room where
Edwards and the three other trans
women were staying, when Edwards

French LGBT advocacy groups have
condemned the series of terrorist attacks in
Paris last Friday that left 129 people dead.
Jrme Beaug, co-chair of Inter-LGBT,
a coalition of French advocacy groups, on
Twitter described the attacks as ignoble.
He also expressed his support for the
victims and law enforcement ocials who
are working right now to keep us safe.
Faced with horror and violence, faced
with terrorism and persecution, we will
remain united and stand stronger than
ever, wrote Beaug on his Twitter page.
Many advocates who are aliated with
Inter-LGBT were attending a conference
in the French city of Avignon when the
attacks took place.
Amaud
Gauthier-Fawas,
a
spokesperson for Inter-LGBT, told the
Washington Blade during an interview
from Paris that the gathering on Saturday
began with a moment of silence.
The LGBT Center of Paris le-de-France
on its website posted a statement
that expressed its condolences to the
victims. La Manif Pour Tous, a group that
organized eorts against the extension
of marriage rights to same-sex couples
in France in 2013, on its Twitter page
described the attacks as terrible.
We keep all the victims, the injured,
the families and law enforcement in our
thoughts, said La Manif Pour Tous.
French Ambassador to the U.S.
Grard Araud, who is gay, on Saturday
joined White House Chief of Sta Denis
McDonough and hundreds of others who
gathered at Lafayette Square adjacent
to the White House to pay tribute to the
victims. Araud led the crowd in singing
the French national anthem before
people placed candles and owers at the
base of a statue of Gen. Marquis Gilbert
de Lafayette.
The attacks began around 9:20 p.m.
local time when the rst of three suicide
bombers blew themselves up outside the
Stade de France.
A football match between France and
Germany was taking place when the rst
and second incidents took place. French
President Franois Hollande and German
Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier
were among the 80,000 people who were
inside the stadium for the match.
A group of gunmen with semiautomatic ries at around 9:25 p.m.
opened re at Le Carillon, a bar in the
10th arrondissement that is roughly 4.7
miles south of the Stade de France. One
were reworks.
Bonnet told the magazine that the
restaurants owner pulled down the
security curtains as people were running
and screaming down the street.
He said he and his parents left the
restaurant and drove to his home, which
is less than 200 feet away from the Italian
restaurant in which ve people were killed.
I could see police everywhere, Bonnet
told Newsweek. People were screaming. I
understood I couldnt go home that night.
The Paris attacks took place a day after
twin suicide bombings killed more than 40
people in the Lebanese capital of Beirut.
Two men in January attacked the
oces of Charlie Hebdo, a French
satirical magazine that had previously
published controversial cartoons of the
Prophet Muhammed. The assailants
who indicated they had ties to Islamic
extremists killed the publications editor
and 11 others.
Charlie Hebdos oces are a few blocks
away from Bataclan.

Under pressure from members of the community to account for the income
and expenditures incurred during Pride 2015, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and
Transgender Community Center of Baltimore and Central Maryland (GLCCB),
held a town hall meeting on Nov. 10 at the Chase Brexton Mount Vernon Center.
The gathering allowed new board president Jabari Lyles to address Pride-related
issues, oer an overview of the organization and to welcome community input.
Lyles described the GLCCBs structure and the nancial data from the most
recent Pride to a crowd of about 60. Pride, which is the GLCCBs principal source
of revenue, made a prot of $49,400 this year. In 2014, Pride netted $64,000.
Some in the community raised concerns about the absence of accounting for
the outlays and questioned specic expenditures. These issues, coupled with
the sudden resignation of Pride coordinator and deputy executive director Paul
Liller, motivated GLCCBs leadership to hold the town hall.
Lyles and others charged that Liller used bad judgment in procuring the
amount of T-shirts for Pride, for example, as well as creating a fundraising
Halloween event called OutRageous without authorization. OutRageous was
cancelled because of a lack of sales and ultimately cost the GLCCB $9,000 with
nearly half of that amount to be used as a credit for a future event involving the
same caterer.
Liller, who was not present at the meeting, rejected the criticisms. Regarding
allegations of mismanagement for both OutRageous and Pride T-Shirts, I will

Overall, Lyles was pleased with the nearly three-hour meeting. Its refreshing

students. And so when I edited the column, I knew it would get a lot of attention
on campus but I was young and nave and
had no idea the maelstrom that it would
trigger. On the day it was published, I received an early morning phone call at my
apartment from the newspaper oce.
Kevin, you need to get down here. There
are protesters picketing the oce.
When I arrived, there were two white
students pacing in front of my oce carrying signs bearing crosshairs that read,
White Man, Shoot Here. It was startling
but hardly a mass protest. I dismissed it
as minor and went about my day. Later,
I got a call from an Associated Press reporter in Harrisburg whod heard about
the protest. I explained that it was a brief
demonstration by just two people. He
wrote a story that moved across the AP
state wire that night while I was still in the
oce. Our news editor agged it for me.
It read that our oces were besieged by
a wave of protests following publication of the column. I was disappointed by
the irresponsible sensationalism of the
AP writer but it was only the state wire.

Western leaders have begun using the Arabic acronym for ISIS, Daesh, which has
a mocking connotation. Declaring yourself a caliphate does not make you one.
We must respond to the attacks intelligently and in cooperation with our allies. We cannot simply bomb our way to
safety. We cannot wall ourselves o from
a world in which we are deeply engaged
commercially and culturally, and in which
we extensively project ourselves militarily. We cannot prevail unilaterally or by
holding ourselves above the rest of the
world. We cannot paper over legitimate
grievances resulting from our past actions.
As Edward R. Murrow said in delivering the political epitaph of Sen. Joseph
McCarthy in 1954, We will not be driven
by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig
deep in our own history and our doctrine
and remember that we are not descended from fearful men.
Surveying the psych ward of Republican candidates, exploiting fear may oer
their best chance of retaking the White
House. Three factors make this doubtful:
Our evident indifference toward nonEuropeans renders us derelict in facing the global threat; but Republicans
are too busy insulting them to recognize them as vital allies. Donald Trump
imitates the Chinese saying, We want

Meanwhile, President Obamas Pentagon
quietly took out ISIS leaders in Syria and
Libya.
Instead of showing strength amid
tragedy, conservatives turned cowardly
and demanded that Syrian refugees be
turned away lest a jihadist be lurking
among them. Never mind the major role
America played in creating chaos in Syria,
where civilian deaths dwarf those in Paris. On the night of the attacks, ordinary
Parisians took stranded strangers into
their homes. They displayed more courage than is being asked of Americans.
Despite more than half of Americas governors absurdly announcing their own
harsh immigration policies, refugees face
extensive screening procedures.
Muslims across the world have denounced the attacks. Ignoring this hampers the relationships we need to defeat the extremists. Appropriately, many

The Theater J folks seem to know murky family dramas play well over
the holidays. One thinks of last years Tony Kushner play The Intelligent
Homosexuals Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures.
This year, the company is oering Sons of the Prophet, a 2012 Pulitzer
Prize nalist and dark comedy by Stephen Karam in which two gay brothers
in Pennsylvania experience a terrible year in which their father dies in a freak
accident with a plastic deer decoy. They think it cant get much worse but it
does as health, sanity and family are called into question.
The show runs through Sunday, Dec. 20, with various matinees and
performance times. Full schedule is online at theater.org. Several post-show
discussions are scheduled for various performances. Tickets start at $37. The
theater is in the D.C. Jewish Community Center at 1529 16th St., N.W.
Actor Jaysen Wright is in the cast. The D.C. native returned to the region in
2012 after stints in Iowa for college and Indiana for graduate school.
He and his anc, Christopher, live in Columbia Heights. He enjoys tennis,

If Janet Jackson is voted into the Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame next month, it will be
at least in some small part due to the
eorts of mega fan Mike Litherland.
Jackson, who ranks no. 7 on Billboards
new list of biggest acts of all time, has
been passed over for the Rock Hall honor
since she was rst eligible in 2007. But
after a decade in the musical wilderness
following her infamous Super Bowl
performance, Jackson is back in a big way
with a No. 1 album Unbreakable (her
seventh, making her only the third artist
after Springsteen and Streisand to score
No. 1 albums in each of the past four
decades), a sold-out world tour and her
rst Rock Hall nomination.
Litherland has worked since 2012 to get
Jackson into the Hall. He started a Facebook
page that year titled, Induct Janet Jackson
into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which
has more than 80,000 followers.
People are really behind Janet again,
Litherland told the Blade. It was the cool
thing to do to bash Janet Jackson after the
Super Bowl and her fans took a beating.
But its all changed and everybody wants
to see her succeed again. This induction
would be the icing on the cake.
Theres been a lot of speculation about
the perceived Jackson snub, with many
assuming the Super Bowl fallout ruined
her chances for Rock Hall induction. But
Litherland says her long absence from
the music scene is likely to blame and

Down Under wonder
Minogue releases
Christmas album
By CHRIS GERARD
Its that most wonderful time of the
year again the annual rush of new
holiday albums is upon us.
This year Australian pop icon Kylie
Minogue gets into the festive spirit with
her rst holiday album, Kylie Christmas.
Holiday albums are ubiquitous this time
of year and its easy to understand why.
They can be produced rather quickly and
can be reintroduced for a new round of
sales every holiday season.
Of course, some are better than others.
Many artists go through the motions and
produce what amounts to a karaoke collection
of the same old Christmas standards that
weve heard a million times before, while
others put more care and ingenuity into
their project. Thankfully Kylie Christmas
is of the latter variety. Its an engaging and
entertaining mix of old standards and new
songs with a couple of duets and surprises
thrown in for good measure.
Its the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
is the buoyant opener and its brimming
with good cheer and smiles. For the most
part, Minogue goes for a more traditional
arrangement and instrumentation, giving
Kylie Christmas an elegant warmth. Apart
from a couple tracks, this is not dance diva
Christmas with heavy electronic beats.
Through the magic of studio technology,
Minogue duets with Frank Sinatra on Santa
Claus is Comin To Town, again mixing the
classic with the modern and creating a
sheer delight.
Its hard to match Chrissie Hyndes exquisite
vocal on the Pretenders bittersweet classic
2000 Miles, but Minogue does her best.
She sings the song with grace and reverence.
Minogue and British comedian James Corden
deliver a beautiful duet on the old Yaz classic
Only You. While its not a holiday song per
se, the romantic ballads expression of love
ts beautifully with the festive favorites.

Partners insistence on
bringing play pal home
rattles hubby
MICHAEL,
My husband Andrew and I have been
together for almost 40 years. Weve
always been monogamous.
When we rst got together we made the
decision that we wanted our relationship
to be just us. We certainly were going
against the 1970s norm, but the decision
saved our lives. Almost all our friends
unknowingly contracted HIV and died of
AIDS in the 1980s.
Last year Andrew told me that he
wanted to start having sex with other
men. Having just turned 60, hes decided
that life is too short to miss out. While I
can understand his desires and am not
trying to stop him, were at loggerheads
on two points.
First, Andrew is using condoms and
taking PrEP but Im still terried he might
catch some STD, so I no longer have
unprotected sex with him. He says Im
paranoid, but we watched our friends
start dying in 1982 from an unknown virus
and I dont want to go down the same
road. Im terribly sad that hes taking risks
with his health and Im unwilling to take
risks with mine.
Second, Andrew has gotten attached to a
young man (24 years old) whom hes been
having a lot of sexual contact with. He wants
me to welcome George into our home but
it would hurt me to see them together. He
invited George to our annual Thanksgiving
celebration without asking me and I want
him to rescind the invitation.
Andrew says Im making a mountain
out of a molehill and that George is not a
threat, but I am not comfortable.
I think Andrew has lost his mind, taking
risks with his health and disregarding my
feelings. Am I wrong?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Nothing is necessarily wrong when
couples have major dierences. Even

REALESTATE
A moving experience
An agent navigates
the sellers market
By VALERIE M. BLAKE
After more than eight years in my
2,600-square-foot, four-story, four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath house, I recently downsized to a one-story, threebedroom, one-and-a-half bath home
of roughly half the size. The timing was
right, the price was right and the house
was right, so I leapt from one D.C. neighborhood to another.
Well, leapt is probably not exactly the
right word since overall, it took me a little
less than ve months to get from Oer
Submitted to Sold.
Instead of leaping, I ran, tripped, faltered, got up, ran some more, waited impatiently, cried, screamed at the walls and
nally sat at the settlement table, pen in
hand, and signed away a tree. And I think
every real estate agent should have this
experience once every seven to 10 years.
Even though we pride ourselves on being problem solvers and insert ourselves
routinely in complex transactions as the
cool heads and voices of reason, its all
too easy for us to become complacent
in our eorts to see things from the perspective of our clients. When we are the
clients, however, the dynamics change.
My recent move involved both the purchase and sale of a home, so I got to experience both sides of what my clients go
through. Its not that I havent done this
before. In fact, this was my 45th personal
