Sales at Cargotec for the
first half of 2014 were up
3 % at 1.555 billion
(US$ 2.1 billion) from the
1.515 billion ($ 2.05 billion) in
the same period a year earlier.
For the most recent quarter,
however, sales were down 4 %
to 804 million ($ 1.09 billion)
from 836 million
($ 1.129 billion) in Q2 2013.
Operating profit for H1
2014 was 17.8 million
($ 24 million), down from
46.1 million ($ 62 million)
in H1 2013. This decrease
was attributed to project cost
overruns in the Kalmar port
crane and handling equipment
division. Cargotec includes the
Hiab, Kalmar and MacGregor
manufacturing businesses.

it would also offer the Terex
AC 35, a 40 tonne capacity all

the 50 tonne AC 50-1 and
the 80 tonne AC 80-2 all

delivery initiative.
In addition to the Terex

be offered, including new
Tadano machines.
Hewden said that if the
cranes were not delivered

ordering, it would credit the
first three hours of rental back

Jeff Schofield, marketing

Core Fleet has been a real hit
with customers. It adds real
value because the offer is clear
and, critically, consistent.

Adding complexity
A complicating factor for
Manitowoc is that it has been
put under pressure from
an activist investor to split
its cranes and foodservice

The overall effect of these
competing forces was that the

oncerns regarding
accidents with self
propelled modular
transporter (SPMT) were
expressed at KHLs World
Crane and Transport
Summit in Amsterdam, the
Netherlands, back in 2011.
At the conference a number
of speakers pointed out that
some SPMT loads were tipping
over, even though the existing
operating rules and stability
calculations had been precisely
followed. Clients were asking
what the industry was going to
do about the problem.
In response, the European
Association of Abnormal
Road Transport and Mobile
Cranes (ESTA) created a
working group that included
representatives from several
of its leading members, plus
manufacturers and clients.
ESTA also commissioned
Dutch engineering consultancy
company Euro-Rigging
to develop a common
mathematical model that
could be used throughout the
industry and that would better
take into account the full range
of forces affecting an SPMT
and its load.
David Collett, ESTA
Following guidelines
Collett said that up to now
accidents and near misses
have sometimes happened
even when the existing safety
guidelines have been followed.
When an accident happens
the fall-out can be monstrous,
Collett explained Of course,
there is the issue of personal
safety, and that is terrible. On
top of that, a whole project can
be threatened and the losses
can be huge.
At the same time, in some
markets an increasing amount
of work is being done by
SPMTs, they are becoming
the norm, and yet there are
no guidelines at all. Nothing
exists. Of course, the best
practice guide will not be able
to address every issue in every
circumstance, but it will be a

Bridge up
In February 2014 construction of a
bridge, the largest new structure on the
line, began. The rail bridge will span
Hardengreen roundabout, between
Eskbank and Newton Grange. It is the
longest bridge to have been built from
scratch for the new railway line and
constitutes the most significant milestone
in
i the lines construction to date.

A weather window appeared and the
beams made the crossing in relatively
calm weather, and were delivered to site
on time. On arrival at the site a 1,200
tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1
wheeled mobile telescopic crane from
Mammoet was used to lift the bridge
beams into position. The project is due to
be completed in 2015.

Custom models
With different restrictions being
implemented across the world,
manufacturers are providing end users
with a range of equipment. The latest
model of specialized transport for specialist
company Collett Transport from the UK,
for example, is a new custom 550 tonne
payload STB 550 side girder deck from
Scheuerle in Germany.
The hydraulically extendable STB 550
is the latest version in a series designed for
flexibility in its configuration. The deck
span range is from 29,200 to 34,200 mm
long. Loading width can be adjusted from
3,450 to 7,400 mm. The vertical lift of the
deck in the load area is 1,650 mm.
The girder deck includes design features
unique to Colletts specifications. It was

Customer satisfaction
To help meet customer demands, transport
service providers need to have a range
of equipment. Transport company
Van der Vlist, for example, has added new
equipment to its fleet, including a 10 axle
semi low trailer with a 3-axle modular
section and 7-axles. The difference with
this trailer is the combination of multiple
axles to take up to 100 tonnes, as well
as the lower height, a spokesperson from
Van der Vlist says. We have also invested
in extendible trailers tailored specifically to
wind turbine blades, able to take 36 tonnes.
Southwest Industrial Rigging in the
USA has expanded its fleet with 20 lines
of Goldhofer THP-DR and two STZ-H 9
semi low loaders. The transport provider
has also added two TK110HED low deck
trailers from Trail King.
For heavy transportation requirements,
Lampson International offers track
driven crawler transporters for hauling
heavy outsize loads in difficult terrain
and extreme environments. The

Future shifts
Most manufacturers are keeping quiet as
to what new products are in development.
Demands for boom trucks are, however,
shifting towards the higher end of the
capacity scale. Matt Trefz explains, Boom
trucks are always getting bigger.
Certain work applications favour an
ever-increasing lifting capacity and this
pushes manufacturers to develop
larger models.

THE KNOWLEDGE
The transport
For the transport in Denmark, Wagenborg
opted for a double 16 axle line Scheuerle
SPMT with two power packs of 350 kW
each, which resulted in loads as follows:
TRANSPORTERS: 32 axle lines * 4 tonnes/
axle line + 2 PPU * 7.2 tonnes/PPU = 142.4
tonnes
BULLET TANKS: 325.5 tonnes
TOTAL WEIGHT: 467.9 tonnes
AXLE LINE LOAD: 467.9 tonnes / 32 axle
lines = 14.6 tonnes per axle line
Axle load:14.6 tonnes per axle line / 2 axles
= 7.31 tonnes / axle
With a maximum axle line load of
32 tonnes (including self weight) this put
the transporter at 14.6 tonnes / 32 tonnes =
52 % of its capacity in static condition (no
dynamic forces taken into account).
As for the ground pressure, always a
controversial topic, the shadow area below
the transporters was taken to determine
this. The total shadow area was as follows:
2 x SPMT x Length x Width = 2 x (16 x 1.4 m)
x 2.43 = 108.86 square metres.
Ground pressure = total weight / shadow
area = 467.9 / 108.86 = 4.30 tonnes per
square metre.
The use of a double wide SPMT
combination ensured transverse hydraulic
stability angles of 11.9 degrees and
transverse structural stability angles of

belts to facilitate a quick turnaround.
The rigging layout was cleverly designed
in such a way that it could all be hooked
up and attached at ground level without
the cumbersome use of man baskets
or man lifts.
The bullets were then lifted from their
saddles to sufficient height to clear the
foundations and sand beds and both cranes
walked to the far end of the sand bed
foundation to lower the first bullet in its
final place.
The carefully laid out crane mats,
hundreds of them, ensured that the ground
pressure imposed by the cranes never
exceeded 10 tonnes per square metre.
Worth mentioning is the fact that
the operator in the Demag crane was
performing the lift blind as he was working
from behind a foundation wall that
completely blocked his view. Dry runs
and clear communication with agreed
terminology made even this part of the
project go smoothly. At a rate of two
bullets a day, this part of the project was
completed in just four days.
Smart thinking
To make this project a bit easier to
execute, the engineering and fabrication
departments at Wagenborg worked
together and designed some add-ons on
for the transporters. First, they designed
a fold-up platform for the PPUs. This
allows the operator to stand on it during

ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS
Working towards
a greener future
From the manufacturing
process to making
equipment more
recyclable, manufacturers
are reducing the impact
their products have
on the environment.
LAURA HATTON reports
ith increasing focus on reducing
the environmental impact
of manufacturing processes,
manufacturers are putting in a lot of time,
effort and resources to achieve it.
Crane manufacturer Hiab, for example,
follows the ISO14001 management system
during manufacturing procedures. A
spokesperson from Hiab explains, In
our new multi assembly unit in Stargard,
Poland we have a neutral energy system.
We also use solvent free paint and
recycled plastics.
To keep the environmental impact of
manufacturing down, crane manufacturer
Liebherr-Werk Biberach in Germany
is a partner of the Blue Competence
sustainability initiative, run by the
Verein Deutscher Maschinen- und
Anlagenbaus e.V. VDMA. To protect
the climate and environment
Liebherr has material collection
containers and materials are
sent for recycling and reused.
The company also has
a photovoltaic power
plant measuring on
its factory roof. In
addition,

ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS
Crane manufacturer Palfinger has an
environmental team to work on issues
such as energy consumption, hazardous
waste and waste cuttings. In Western
Europe, for example, the roof of our site
in Guima, France was converted into a
solar roof, a Palfinger spokesperson says.
In Niagara Falls, Canada, the efficiency
of the lighting system was enhanced. In
Council Bluffs USA a reverse osmosis
system was installed to lower the sites
water consumption by approximately 30 %
compared to the level recorded in 2009.
Team effort
Reducing the environmental impact that
cranes have once in operation is another
area that manufacturers are striving for.
Tadano in Japan, for example, offers the
Cargo Crane Zest Prime Eco series, which
has an eco pump and eco winch that
reduces engine speed by 60 %, fuel
consumption by 45 %, and noise by
8 dB compared to the ZR series, the
manufacturer said.
The eco winch reduces the flow
volume of hydraulic oil and controls the
temperature increase of hydraulic oil
by controlling the speed of the winch
automatically, depending on lifting load,
a spokesperson from Tadano explains.
During the light weight lifting, the winch
keeps a current speed and reduces the
speed to a safe level during heavy lifting.
To help reduce its carbon footprint,
Hiab worked with Volvo on a solution
for an electrically driven pump. We also
provide solutions for variable pumps to
reduce the diesel consumption of the
carrier during operations, a spokesperson
from Hiab adds.
To reduce carbon dioxide emissions,
Liebherr offers a hybrid drive named
Pactronic for some of its duty cycle cranes.
Power options
End users are also continually looking
at ways to reduce their environmental
impact. GGR, for example, stocks a
range of zero emissions battery powered
compact cranes and machines with
alternative power options. GGRs
standard Unic mini cranes can be supplied
with an electric or liquefied petroleum
gas (LPG) power option, a company
spokesperson says. The cranes are
also compact enough to be stored and
re-charged on site when hired for more
than one day.
GGR also offers customers filtration
systems, which can be fitted to the cranes
diesel engine exhaust. Three types of
diesel particulate filters are available;
the portable scrubber, compact scrubber
and crane mounted scrubber. These
scrubbers offer up to 99 % reduction
of particulate matter emissions and are
approved by the VERT association, a
non profit organisation that aims to
establish the best available technology
for combustion engine exhaust emission
control, a company spokesperson adds.

COMMENT
Joel M Dandrea
A reason to stay
As our industry and the marketplace becomes ever
more competitive, the reality that we will eventually
lose high-value employees, whether were ready for it or
not, remains inevitable. Most of us are familiar with the scenario:
a key staff member makes the announcement that, after much
consideration, and even soul searching, theyve decided to pursue
another opportunity often taking a similar role within the
industry, perhaps with a client or a competitor.
Within this predicament a realisation often occurs: could you
have given this employee a greater reason to stay?
Some leaders pave the way for their employees to do their
best work while others complicate the process and make things
much more difficult than they have to be. According to a
Strategy+Business survey published in November 2013, 51 %
of employees from more than 250 companies in 37 countries
revealed a tendency to believe that their leadership was often in
the way of their success serving as much more of an obstacle
to it than an enabler of it. This group also believed that company
initiatives tended to succeed not because of their leaders but
despite them. Isnt exactly a recipe for keeping top talent is it?
That said it stands to reason that most company leaders arent
arriving at work every day with the intention of stifling progress.
But what can occur over time with bosses, especially within
companies that are moving along steadily, is the hindrance
trap a loosely based assumption whereby leaders see the success
of their teams as a direct reflection of their great leadership.
Within this trap, an organisation and, often many of the people in
important positions there, ends up settling for less over the long
run instead of remaining engaged, progressive and proactive
(traits associated with self-aware leaders).
Successful leaders can sidestep the hindrance trap and,
