Hogenakkal

Hogenakkal is a town in Tamil Nadu known for its waterfall on the Cauvery River. The Hogenakkal Waterfalls are a series of falls formed as the wide Cauvery River splits and plunges into a deep gorge. Tourists can take coracle boat rides across the river to view the falls up close. The town is a popular day trip destination from nearby cities like Bangalore, accessible by bus in around 3 hours. However, some reviews note the area is becoming increasingly polluted with plastic waste, threatening its natural beauty.

About Hogenakkal
Hogenakkal is a small town in Tamil Nadu on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border, which is known
for its waterfall. The Hogenakkal Waterfall is a famous picnic spot. It is located at a height of 750
feet in the Melagiri Hills. Its water is said to have healing powers.
Hogenakkal Waterfalls, called as the Niagara of India are a sequence of falls. The wide flow of
the Kaveri River gets split at this point, forms an island and plunges into a deep gulf to create
one of the most beautiful waterfalls. The rocks thus get there name as Hogenakkal, which
means smoking rock.
This seashore bath is well-known for coracle rides and masseurs. The noise of the Kaveri River,
noisy between pebbly banks, is a regular attendance at most places in Hogenakkal. An
additional attraction is the diving skill of the local kids, who show somersaults for a charge. They
jump from a height of approximately 30 feet into the stream and go up straight back on the
rocks within seconds.
Tourists can take a coracle trip from one corner of the river to the other. The coracles or
spherical basket boats are enclosed with black synthetic sheets and take tourists across the
waterway to the base of the falls. The best time to visit Hogenakkal is during the rainy season
when the river overflows.
Hogenakkal is a popular daytrip destination from Bangalore and nearby cities. It is just over 130
km from Bangalore and bus services are available from Bangalore in Karnataka and Salem in
Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is Bangalore International Airport and the nearest rail station is
at Dharmapuri and Salem.

One spot in the falls makes it worth going
"People visit Hogenakkal mainly to see the Falls and for Boating. Boating is thrilling and very
enjoyable! In the same time, it is quite dangerous if the water flow is too high. So it is not
preferred to go for boating in Rainy season.
There are several masseurs who do oil massage few yards away from the falls. It was my first
massage ever and it was awesome! Everyone should try it without fail. The price is low around
Rs. 100 to 200 depending upon the type of massage you take. Women have a separate room
for the massage.
Here comes the best spot! There is a place where the water falls from a huge rock - it forms a
Page 2/9

'D' shape where you can go in between the water fall and the rock. When you look up, you'll find
the Beauty! You'll feel as if you are under an Umbrella. Beautiful!
The place is not so clean so it is not the best to wear White clothes. It is also slippery in various
places.
Food: Food is not so hygiene either so it is better to take food along if it is a one day trip.
In the afternoon, it will be very Hot so it is best to be in water." - Jai Raj, Bangalore, 2 months

Hogenakkal - Save it before its too late!!

"Hogenakkal is a mesmerizing village where the 'Jeevanadhi' Cauvery falls from a height of
about 20mtrs at various points, creating a bunch of falls and a visual treat. This was my second
trip to this beautiful locale in a gap of 10 months and found it more better than the last one!
Pictureseque stretch of roads, scenig hills and serene cauvery all adding to the beauty.
Anything and everything about this small but very famous tourist place is told and told again.
But I feel sad to write the present condition of this place, which sems to be detoriating every
passing day. The maddening crowd, irresponsible administration and not-so-aware villagers are
least bothered about the place being endangered. The cause is Pollution and pollution. The
waterfall which once basked in its glory now is filled with plastic waste and stagnant dirt. One can
see people performing last rituals (pinda) right beside the bathing place. Another washing
clothes just beside that. Floating shops in parisals are a major attraction but nobody bothers to
collect the plastic waste thrown into the river because of these shops. Hogenakkal claims of
plastic free environment but its a biggest sarcasm! This place is full of plastic and waste.
Hogenakkal....... where are you heading to???? The government collects about 30 rs from each
vehicle for entrance and parking but seems to do least about the cleanliness here. If this
continues then Hogenakkal's pride and glory may one day become history. Wake up before
that....
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Find this guy, Suresh (9943305874). He is a parisal(boat)
rider. A nice chap who seems to know quite well about this place. Ask him for boat trip from the
island 8km away+falls ride and settle for an amount(we ended up paying 2000). Pls carry food
from the town as there r no shops here) We parcelled food from the Hotel opposite to parking
lot and beside bar (sorry dont remember the name). It was awesome. The island is far from all
pollution and crowd and a nice place to rest yourself in water. This guy can wait for you as long
as u wish and even tell u bout the places within river wic are dangerous. After the water play, u
can take boat ride for 8kms (2.5hrs) on a scenic valley and he wil take u on a ride even under
the falls.(falls ride closed after 5pm, so make sure u plan accordingly).
Activities & things to do: Play in river (making sure of the dangerous places), 8KM rafting (dont
sleep off :) ), falls view from boat (pls dont get down water here, its dirty), Eat fish on the sand
bed. and please please make sure you dont litter.. Save Hogenakkal for future.
Page 3/9

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: From Bangalore, hit Hosur road, af Hosur
Junction (just after flyover), take right (Rayakottai road). Go to Rayakottai and then to Palacode.
The stretch here is simply amazing even the roads are too good. Free from traffic and scenic.
After Palacode, take right at Nagadasinampatti (Ample of hoardings are seen along the road).
Move ahead to Pennagram to Hogenakkal. It is exactly 152km from BTM layout in Blore :) and
shouldnot take more than 4hrs easy drive. Please make sure u carry cash as there are no
ATMs in Hogenakkal." - Sam, Bangalore, May 13, 2010

Hogenakkal Located at the borders of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, amidst the Melagiri Hills,
Hogenakkal is famous for its waterfalls. Hogenakkal is situated at a height of 250 meters above
sea level, and has a moderate climate with warm summers and pleasant winters. Summer in
Hogenakkal prevails between the months of March to June. During this season the average
maximum temperature is around 34 to 37 Celsius and the average minimum temperature is
23 Celsius. The summer heat makes it quite uncomfortable for tourists to enjoy the place and
not too many tourists visit at this time of the year. Monsoon arrives here during June to August,
and during these months the place receives frequent showers, causing the river to overflow.
This is a good time for sight-seeing since the waterfall remains in full force due to the rains.
Hogenakkal has a pleasant winter during the months of December to February. During the
winter season the average maximum temperature is around 27 Celsius and the average
minimum temperature is 13 Celsius. Hogenakkal can be visited almost all through the year
except during the summer months. The best part of the year to visit Hogenakkal is however
right after the monsoon season, during the months of October and March. During this time the
river is in full spade and tourists can experience the beauty of the waterfalls. Also, the weather
is quite pleasant during this time with moderate and comfortable temperatures. However, many
tourists also prefer to visit the place during the off-season as well. Boating is allowed only during
the dry season during which time the water falls are not strong enough to disturb the boats.
