HAZELWOOD:OVERVIEW

Hazelwoodisapurposebuiltschoolspeciallydesignedtomeettherequirementsofpupilswithsensoryand
dualsensoryimpairmentandadditionalcomplexneeds.FormedbybringingtogetherCarnboothSchooland
KelvinSchool,itissituatedinabeautifulwoodedsettingadjacenttoBellahoustonPark,andopenedin
summer2007.

Hazelwoodisacoeducational,interdenominationalschoolforchildrenandyoungpeopleagedfrom318
years.Thecurrentschoolrollis52.Parentsshouldnotethattheworkingcapacityoftheschoolmayvary
dependinguponthenumberofpupilsateachstageandthewayinwhichclassesareorganised.

Thedesignoftheschoolistheproductofahighdegreeofcollaborationbetweenparents,staff,associated
agenciesandthearchitects.Theinterioroftheschoolhasbeenaimedatmaximizingindependenceand
providingtheoptimumlearningenvironment.Thisattentiontotheneedsofpupilsinthedesignprocesshas
resultedinasecureandhighlystimulatingeducationalenvironmentforallthepupils.

HazelwoodSchoolaimstoprovideasafeandsecurelearningenvironmentforallpupilswithaparticular
emphasisondevelopinglifeskillsandpromotingindependence.Asmostofourpupilshaveavisual
impairment,withsomealsohavingahearingimpairment,aswellasadditionallearningdifficulties,our
curriculumismultisensoryanddifferentiatedtomeettheindividualneedsofpupils.Educational
programmesaredevisedincollaborationwithotherspecialistsincludingphysiotherapists,speechand
languagetherapists,occupationaltherapists,educationalpsychologistsandschoolnursingservices.

Theschoolhasaninterdenominationalstatus.Withintheschoolwefosteranatmosphereoflove,trustand
mutualrespect.

OURSCHOOLDAY
Educationalprogrammesbeginat9.00eachday.Mostclassesbeginthedaywithagoodmorningactivity.
Thisisfollowedbyastructuredprogrammewhichhasbeenplannedtoaddresstheindividualneedsof
pupils.Pupilshavea15minuteintervalinthecafareaeachmorningwherearangeofhealthysnacksare
available.Weviewthelunchtimeperiodasanexcellentopportunitytoteachskillsassociatedwith
communication,socialskillsandeatinganddrinking.Withthisinmind,allstaffworkcollaborativelywith
pupilsatthistime.Weoftenorganiseinformallunchtimeactivitiesbetween12.30and1.00pm.Pupilsare
encouragedtomakechoicesastowhichactivitiestheywouldliketoattend.Ourafternoonsessionisfrom
1.00pm3.00pm

NurseryDepartment

Thenurserydepartmentoperateswithinthesamehoursastheschool.Howevernurserypupilsattendfor
onlypartoftheweek.Whilstmanyotherpreschoolpupilsattendearlyyearsestablishmentsforaset
numberofhalfdays,eithermorningorafternoon,nurserypupilswhoattendHazelwoodwillattendfor
between24wholedays.

ExtendedDayProgrammes

Weofferoneortwoextendeddayprogrammeseachweektoallchildrenandyoungpeopleintheprimary
andsecondarydepartment.Theseprogrammesprovidepupilswithopportunitiestointeractandsocialise
withtheirpeerswithinalessformalcontextthanthatexperiencedduringtheschoolday.Activitiesare
plannedbymembersoftheschoolmanagementteam,incollaborationwithsocialcareworkers.

Therehasbeenawealthofresearchoverthepastfewdecadesintohowchildrenwhohavedifficultieswith
learningcanbeassistedtomakesenseoftheirworldthroughstructureandpredictability.Providingaclear,
consistentstructureforthechildrennotonlyhelpstodeveloptheirmemoryandsequencingskills,butalso
increasestheirsenseofsecurityastheroutinebecomesfamiliartothem,raisingtheirselfconfidenceand
selfesteemandprovidingasolidbaseforfuturelearning.

Aswellasprovidingaclearandconsistentdailyroutineforthechildren,wealsowanttoprovide
opportunitiesforthemtolearn,asallyoungchildrendo,throughactiveplayexploring,experimentingand
discoveringforthemselvesinarangeofdifferentcontextsandusingawidevarietyofmaterialsand
resources.

InHazelwoodNursery,westrivetostriketherightbalancebyprovidingbothaclearandconsistentstructure
totheday,aswellaslotsofopportunitiesforactivelearning.

Hazelwoodisanassessmentnursery.Youngchildrenwhocometousinthenurserymaynotnecessarily
becomepupilsattheschool.Oneofourareasofexpertiseisinpreparingyoungchildrenwhoareblindor
haveseverevisualimpairmentformainstreamschoolbyworkingonprebrailleandearlybrailleskills.Early,
focusedinterventioninthisareacanoftenprovidethesupportthatthesechildrenrequiretomakea
successfultransitiontothemainstreamprimarysetting.Ourassessmentprocesseswillhelpustodetermine
themostsuitableschoolplacementforeachchildastheyapproachschoolage.

Asanassessmentnursery,weunderstandtheimportanceofusingassessmenttoolswhicheffectively
capturecriticalinformationaboutthechild.Overthelasttwoyears,withsupportfromparents,wehave
developedourownassessmenttoolkit.This,togetherwithourindepthknowledgeofeachpupil,allowsus
toassessthelearningstrengthsandlearningneedsofeveryindividualchildintheNurserysothatwecan
helptoplantheirfuturelearningpathway.

AswithallotherNurseries,HazelwoodisregulatedthroughannualinspectionbytheCareInspectorate.We
valuetheinputfromCareInspectorateandwelcometheirannualvisitasanopportunitytoselfevaluateand
improvetheserviceweoffer.

ReboundTherapy
Thisisatypeoftherapywhichinvolvesusingatrampolineandatrainedreboundtherapist.The
aimofthesesessionswillvaryfrompupiltopupil.Benefitsincludeimprovedmuscletone,
developmentofcommunicationskillsandbettermobility.

MassageTherapy
Massagecanassistpupilswhoexperiencephysicaldisabilitiesandcanalsoassistpupilswho
experiencedifficultyusingtheirsenseoftouch.Inaddition,parentshavecommentedonhowit
improvessleepingpatternsandtoiletingissues.

EquineTherapy
EachweeksomepupilsvisittheRidingfortheDisabledCentreandtakepartinactivitiesrelated
toriding.Weoftenfindthatpupilsaremuchmorefocusedwhenridingandwilllistenandfollow
instructions.Theactivityallowsthedevelopmentoforalcommunicationskillsforsomepupilsas
theyarerequiredtogiveinstructionstotheirhorse.

Assessmentispartofthelearningandteachingprocess.Staffusetheirprofessionaljudgement
andexpertisetoevaluatelearningoutcomesandprogressofpupils.Inadditiontothedaytoday
assessmentinallareasofthecurriculum,theassessmentofvisionandhearingisanimportant
partoftheprocessthatinformstheprogrammesandmethodologiesused.Trainedteachers
workwithmedicalstaffandotherspecialiststoensurethatrobustassessmentproceduresarein
placeandinformationisavailabletoclassteachersandsupportstaff.

AllpupilsinHazelwoodwillhavetheirlearningtargetsrecordedusingAdditionalSupportPlans.
Theseplanscontaintargetssetbyteachersin3mainareas:LanguageandCommunication,

CAREANDWELFARE

Ifapupilbecomesillwhileatschool,parentswillbecontactedtoagreeonthebestform
ofintervention.Sometimeswewillaskparentstocomeandcollecttheirchildiftheyare

Alleducationestablishmentsandservicesmusttakepositivestepstohelpchildrenprotect
themselvesbyensuringthatprogrammersofhealthandpersonalsafetyarecentraltothe
curriculumandshouldhaveinplaceacurriculumthatensuresthatchildrenhaveaclear
understandingofthedifferencebetweenappropriateandinappropriatebehaviouronthepart
ofanotherperson,nomatterwho.

As with other areas of the curriculum, you will be kept informed of the health and personal
safetyprogrammeforyourchildsestablishment.

Schools, establishments and services must create and maintain a positive ethos and climate
whichactivelypromoteschildwelfareandasafeenvironmentby:

ATTENDANCEATSCHOOL

Althoughsomeofourpupilshaveconditionsthatrequireahighlevelofmedicalintervention,
attendanceinHazelwoodisverygood.Weexpectchildrentoattendeveryday,unlesstheyare
unwell.Ifpupilshavehospitalappointments,weencourageparentstotakethemawayfrom
schoolforonlypartoftheday.Intheeventthatapupilisnotattending,parentsmusttelephone
theschoolasearlyaspossibletoallowustocanceltransport.

Section30ofthe1980EducationActlaysadutyoneveryparentofachildofschoolageto
ensurethattheirchildattendsschoolregularly.Attendancemustberecordedtwiceaday,
morningandafternoon.
Regulation7ofTheEducation(SchoolandPlacingInformation)(Scotland)Amendment,etc

Regulations1993requireseachchildsabsencefromschooltoberecordedintheschoolregister
asauthorised:eg.approvedbytheauthority,orunauthorised:ieunexplainedbytheparent
(truancy)ortemporarilyexcludedfromschool.

Parents/guardiansdonothaveanautomaticrighttotaketheirchildoutofschoolwithout
permissionduringtermtime.TheHeadofEstablishmentcanonlyauthorisetimeoffduring
termtimeinexceptionalcircumstances.
Exceptionalcircumstancesinclude:
.shorttermparentalplacementabroad;
.familyreturningtoitscountryoforiginforfamilyreasons;
.theperiodimmediatelyafteranillnessoraccident
.aperiodofseriousorcriticalillnessofacloserelative;

Giventhatthereissubstantialparental/carerandpublicapprovalofadresscode,schoolsinthis

Undernocircumstanceswillchildrenbedeprivedofanyeducationalbenefitasaresultofnot
wearingclothingconformingtotheschoolsdresscodepolicy.

Clothing&FootwearGrants

Parents/CarersreceivingIncomeSupport,JobSeekersAllowance(IncomeBased),WorkingTax
Credit(withatotalannualincomeoflessthan15,050*),HousingBenefit,orCouncilTaxBenefit
willnormallybeentitledtomonetarygrantsforfootwearandclothingfortheirchildren.

i.General

TheEducationAuthorityhasapolicyofprovidingfreetransporttoallprimarychildrenwholive
morethan1.2milesfromtheirlocalschoolbytherecognisedshortestwalkingroute.Thispolicy
ismoregenerousthanthelawrequires.Thismeansthattheprovisionoftransportcouldbe
reviewedatanytime.Parents/Carerswhoconsidertheyareeligibleshouldobtainanapplication
formfromtheschoolorEducationServices.Theseformsshouldbecompletedandreturned
beforetheendofFebruaryforthosechildrenbeginningschoolinAugusttoenablethe
appropriatearrangementstobemade.

Applicationsmaybesubmittedatanytimethroughouttheyearbutmaybesubjecttodelay
whilstarrangementsaremade.Thedivisionaleducationofficerhasdiscretioninspecial
circumstancestograntpermissionforpupilstotravelintransportprovidedbytheauthority,
wherespareplacesareavailableandnoadditionalcostsareincurred.

TheauthorityhasanExceptionalCircumstancespolicyrelatingtoe.g.homelessness,
parental/carerdisability,etc.Detailsareavailablefromtheschool.Thereisalsoaprocedureto
requesttransportonmedicalgrounds.Theschoolcanadviseonprocedures.

ii.PickupPoints

Wherefreetransportisprovideditmaybenecessaryforpupilstowalkacertaindistancetothe
vehiclepickuppoint.Walkingdistanceintotalincludingthedistancefromhometothepickup
pointandfromthedropoffpointtotheschoolinanyonedirectionwillnotexceedthe
authorityslimits(seeaboveparagraph).Itistheparentsresponsibilitytoensurethattheirchild
arrivesatthepickuppointintime.Itisalsotheparentsresponsibilitytoensurethechild
behavesinasafeandacceptablemannerwhileboarding,travellinginandalightingfromthe
vehicle.Misbehaviourcouldresultinyourchildlosingtherighttofreetransport.

TheEducationAuthoritydoesnotprovidetransportforthosepupilsinreceiptofaplacing
requestotherthaninexceptionalcircumstances.

MembershipoftheParentCouncil
Generally,membersoftheParentCouncilmustbeparents/carersofchildrenwhoattendthe
schoolandthechairpersonmusthaveachildintheschool.However,theParentCouncilcan
decidetocooptothermembersfromteachersandthecommunitywhowillhaveknowledge
andskillstohelpthem.

PRIVACYSTATEMENTANDDATAPROTECTION
DataProtectionuseofinformationaboutchildrenandparents/carers

Asalocalauthority,Glasgowsschoolsandearlyyearsestablishmentsprocessinformationabout
childrenandyoungpeopleinordertoprovideeducationandcare.Indoingsowemustcomply
withtheDataProtectionAct(1998).Thismeans,amongstotherthings,thatthedataheldabout
childrenandyoungpeoplemustonlybeusedforspecificpurposes.However,youshouldbe

In1999theguidelines,DealingwithRacialHarassmentwereissuedtoassistallteachingstaff

Theadoptionofanantiracistapproachshouldbeseenasonepartofthecontinuingattemptto
improvethequalityofeducation.

GlasgowCityCouncilrecognisesthatsupportfromthehomeisessentialiftheseaimsaretobe
achieved.EverychildinGlasgowhastherighttobehappyandsecureatschool.

BULLYING

BullyingbehaviourwillnotbetoleratedwithinGlasgowCityCouncilseducational
establishments.
AllchildreninGlasgowseducationalestablishmentshaveanentitlementtowork(andplay)ina
learningenvironmentinwhichtheyfeelvalued,respectedandsafeandarefreefromallformsof
abuse,bullyingordiscrimination.(AStandardforPastoralCareinGlasgowSchools).
In2009,GlasgowCityCouncilpublisheditsrevisedAntiBullyingPolicy,incorporatingthe
requirementtorecordandreportalldiscriminatorybehaviourswithineducational
establishments.
Allestablishmentsarerequiredtoreviewtheirpolicyinlightofthis.Parentsandcarershavea
significantroletoplayinhelpingtoaddressthisproblem.Forthisreasonanyantibullying
strategymuststresstheimportanceofpartnershipwiththeparentsandcarersoftheirchildren.
