ThisHandbookwillprovideinformationforparentswhoareconsideringHazelwoodSchoolfortheirchilds
education.

Itmayalsobeusefultoparentsofchildrenalreadyattendingtheschoolaswellastovisitorsandotherswho
areinterestedinourworkhere.Morecanbelearnedbyvisitingtheschoolandtalkingtostaff.

OurcentralpurposeatHazelwoodistoprovidehighqualityeducationthroughthecreationofastructured
andcaringlearningenvironmentinwhichindividualpupilscanmaximisetheirpotential.

Ourpupilsaretaughtandcaredforbywellqualified,experiencedandcommittedstaffwhoprovidea
frameworkofhighexpectationsinwhicheachindividualpupilisvaluedandrespected.

HAZELWOOD:OVERVIEW

Hazelwoodisapurposebuiltschoolspeciallydesignedtomeettherequirementsofpupilswithsensoryand
dualsensoryimpairmentandadditionalcomplexneeds.FormedbybringingtogetherCarnboothSchooland
KelvinSchool,itissituatedinabeautifulwoodedsettingadjacenttoBellahoustonPark,andopenedin
summer2007.

Hazelwoodisacoeducational,interdenominationalschoolforchildrenandyoungpeopleagedfrom318
years.Thecurrentschoolrollis52.Parentsshouldnotethattheworkingcapacityoftheschoolmayvary
dependinguponthenumberofpupilsateachstageandthewayinwhichclassesareorganised.

Thedesignoftheschoolistheproductofahighdegreeofcollaborationbetweenparents,staff,associated
agenciesandthearchitects.Theinterioroftheschoolhasbeenaimedatmaximizingindependenceand
providingtheoptimumlearningenvironment.Thisattentiontotheneedsofpupilsinthedesignprocesshas
resultedinasecureandhighlystimulatingeducationalenvironmentforallthepupils.

HazelwoodSchoolaimstoprovideasafeandsecurelearningenvironmentforallpupilswithaparticular
emphasisondevelopinglifeskillsandpromotingindependence.Asmostofourpupilshaveavisual
impairment,withsomealsohavingahearingimpairment,aswellasadditionallearningdifficulties,our
curriculumismultisensoryanddifferentiatedtomeettheindividualneedsofpupils.Educational
programmesaredevisedincollaborationwithotherspecialistsincludingphysiotherapists,speechand
languagetherapists,occupationaltherapists,educationalpsychologistsandschoolnursingservices.

Theschoolhasaninterdenominationalstatus.Withintheschoolwefosteranatmosphereoflove,trustand
mutualrespect.

Wewillprovideasecure,happyandchallengingeducationalenvironmentinwhichallofourpupilswillbe

LearningandTeaching

OURSCHOOLDAY
Educationalprogrammesbeginat9.00eachday.Mostclassesbeginthedaywithagoodmorningactivity.
Thisisfollowedbyastructuredprogrammewhichhasbeenplannedtoaddresstheindividualneedsof
pupils.Pupilshavea15minuteintervalinthecafareaeachmorningwherearangeofhealthysnacksare
available.Weviewthelunchtimeperiodasanexcellentopportunitytoteachskillsassociatedwith
communication,socialskillsandeatinganddrinking.Withthisinmind,allstaffworkcollaborativelywith
pupilsatthistime.Weoftenorganiseinformallunchtimeactivitiesbetween12.30and1.00pm.Pupilsare
encouragedtomakechoicesastowhichactivitiestheywouldliketoattend.Ourafternoonsessionisfrom
1.00pm3.00pm

NurseryDepartment

Thenurserydepartmentoperateswithinthesamehoursastheschool.Howevernurserypupilsattendfor
onlypartoftheweek.Whilstmanyotherpreschoolpupilsattendearlyyearsestablishmentsforaset
numberofhalfdays,eithermorningorafternoon,nurserypupilswhoattendHazelwoodwillattendfor
between24wholedays.

ExtendedDayProgrammes

Weofferoneortwoextendeddayprogrammeseachweektoallchildrenandyoungpeopleintheprimary
andsecondarydepartment.Theseprogrammesprovidepupilswithopportunitiestointeractandsocialise
withtheirpeerswithinalessformalcontextthanthatexperiencedduringtheschoolday.Activitiesare
plannedbymembersoftheschoolmanagementteam,incollaborationwithsocialcareworkers.

Therehasbeenawealthofresearchoverthepastfewdecadesintohowchildrenwhohavedifficultieswith
learningcanbeassistedtomakesenseoftheirworldthroughstructureandpredictability.Providingaclear,
consistentstructureforthechildrennotonlyhelpstodeveloptheirmemoryandsequencingskills,butalso
increasestheirsenseofsecurityastheroutinebecomesfamiliartothem,raisingtheirselfconfidenceand
selfesteemandprovidingasolidbaseforfuturelearning.

Aswellasprovidingaclearandconsistentdailyroutineforthechildren,wealsowanttoprovide
opportunitiesforthemtolearn,asallyoungchildrendo,throughactiveplayexploring,experimentingand
discoveringforthemselvesinarangeofdifferentcontextsandusingawidevarietyofmaterialsand
resources.

InHazelwoodNursery,westrivetostriketherightbalancebyprovidingbothaclearandconsistentstructure
totheday,aswellaslotsofopportunitiesforactivelearning.

Hazelwoodisanassessmentnursery.Youngchildrenwhocometousinthenurserymaynotnecessarily
becomepupilsattheschool.Oneofourareasofexpertiseisinpreparingyoungchildrenwhoareblindor
haveseverevisualimpairmentformainstreamschoolbyworkingonprebrailleandearlybrailleskills.Early,
focusedinterventioninthisareacanoftenprovidethesupportthatthesechildrenrequiretomakea
successfultransitiontothemainstreamprimarysetting.Ourassessmentprocesseswillhelpustodetermine
themostsuitableschoolplacementforeachchildastheyapproachschoolage.

Asanassessmentnursery,weunderstandtheimportanceofusingassessmenttoolswhicheffectively
capturecriticalinformationaboutthechild.Overthelasttwoyears,withsupportfromparents,wehave
developedourownassessmenttoolkit.This,togetherwithourindepthknowledgeofeachpupil,allowsus
toassessthelearningstrengthsandlearningneedsofeveryindividualchildintheNurserysothatwecan
helptoplantheirfuturelearningpathway.

AswithallotherNurseries,HazelwoodisregulatedthroughannualinspectionbytheCareInspectorate.We
valuetheinputfromCareInspectorateandwelcometheirannualvisitasanopportunitytoselfevaluateand
improvetheserviceweoffer.

ReboundTherapy
Thisisatypeoftherapywhichinvolvesusingatrampolineandatrainedreboundtherapist.The
aimofthesesessionswillvaryfrompupiltopupil.Benefitsincludeimprovedmuscletone,
developmentofcommunicationskillsandbettermobility.

MassageTherapy
Massagecanassistpupilswhoexperiencephysicaldisabilitiesandcanalsoassistpupilswho
experiencedifficultyusingtheirsenseoftouch.Inaddition,parentshavecommentedonhowit
improvessleepingpatternsandtoiletingissues.

EquineTherapy

Assessmentispartofthelearningandteachingprocess.Staffusetheirprofessionaljudgement
andexpertisetoevaluatelearningoutcomesandprogressofpupils.Inadditiontothedaytoday

Ifapupilbecomesillwhileatschool,parentswillbecontactedtoagreeonthebestform

Alleducationestablishmentsandservicesmusttakepositivestepstohelpchildrenprotect
themselvesbyensuringthatprogrammersofhealthandpersonalsafetyarecentraltothe
curriculumandshouldhaveinplaceacurriculumthatensuresthatchildrenhaveaclear
understandingofthedifferencebetweenappropriateandinappropriatebehaviouronthepart
ofanotherperson,nomatterwho.

As with other areas of the curriculum, you will be kept informed of the health and personal

ATTENDANCEATSCHOOL

Althoughsomeofourpupilshaveconditionsthatrequireahighlevelofmedicalintervention,
attendanceinHazelwoodisverygood.Weexpectchildrentoattendeveryday,unlesstheyare
unwell.Ifpupilshavehospitalappointments,weencourageparentstotakethemawayfrom
schoolforonlypartoftheday.Intheeventthatapupilisnotattending,parentsmusttelephone
theschoolasearlyaspossibletoallowustocanceltransport.

Section30ofthe1980EducationActlaysadutyoneveryparentofachildofschoolageto
ensurethattheirchildattendsschoolregularly.Attendancemustberecordedtwiceaday,
morningandafternoon.
Regulation7ofTheEducation(SchoolandPlacingInformation)(Scotland)Amendment,etc

Regulations1993requireseachchildsabsencefromschooltoberecordedintheschoolregister
asauthorised:eg.approvedbytheauthority,orunauthorised:ieunexplainedbytheparent
(truancy)ortemporarilyexcludedfromschool.

Parents/guardiansdonothaveanautomaticrighttotaketheirchildoutofschoolwithout
permissionduringtermtime.TheHeadofEstablishmentcanonlyauthorisetimeoffduring

ismoregenerousthanthelawrequires.Thismeansthattheprovisionoftransportcouldbe
reviewedatanytime.Parents/Carerswhoconsidertheyareeligibleshouldobtainanapplication
formfromtheschoolorEducationServices.Theseformsshouldbecompletedandreturned
beforetheendofFebruaryforthosechildrenbeginningschoolinAugusttoenablethe
appropriatearrangementstobemade.

whilstarrangementsaremade.Thedivisionaleducationofficerhasdiscretioninspecial

ii.PickupPoints

Wherefreetransportisprovideditmaybenecessaryforpupilstowalkacertaindistancetothe
vehiclepickuppoint.Walkingdistanceintotalincludingthedistancefromhometothepickup
pointandfromthedropoffpointtotheschoolinanyonedirectionwillnotexceedthe
authorityslimits(seeaboveparagraph).Itistheparentsresponsibilitytoensurethattheirchild
arrivesatthepickuppointintime.Itisalsotheparentsresponsibilitytoensurethechild
behavesinasafeandacceptablemannerwhileboarding,travellinginandalightingfromthe

DataProtectionuseofinformationaboutchildrenandparents/carers

Asalocalauthority,Glasgowsschoolsandearlyyearsestablishmentsprocessinformationabout

GlasgowCityCouncilrecognisesthatsupportfromthehomeisessentialiftheseaimsaretobe
achieved.EverychildinGlasgowhastherighttobehappyandsecureatschool.

BULLYING

BullyingbehaviourwillnotbetoleratedwithinGlasgowCityCouncilseducational
establishments.
AllchildreninGlasgowseducationalestablishmentshaveanentitlementtowork(andplay)ina
learningenvironmentinwhichtheyfeelvalued,respectedandsafeandarefreefromallformsof
abuse,bullyingordiscrimination.(AStandardforPastoralCareinGlasgowSchools).
In2009,GlasgowCityCouncilpublisheditsrevisedAntiBullyingPolicy,incorporatingthe
requirementtorecordandreportalldiscriminatorybehaviourswithineducational
establishments.

significantroletoplayinhelpingtoaddressthisproblem.Forthisreasonanyantibullying
