also in construction mode at the time.
We celebrate the fact that this place is now accessible

Winter In The Forest Festival!
What else would you rather be doing on a Monday in
February? It’s BC Family Day, so come on out with your
family and enjoy great entertainment, offbeat activities,
plenty of food and good company.
The JV Humphries grades 10 - 12 will be your direc-
tors of fun. The students are donating their pay for festival
hosting to the Wiltse family fund, to help out fellow grade NEW PRODUCT
10 student Rowan Wiltse. Rowan just found out she has SPECIAL

of Four on Four ball hockey. The woodsman competition
has fun events that anyone can enter, like the Swede saw-
ing race and the water boil. Win the prize for being the Call 250-359-7000

matches.
At noon, catch all the action of the Human Dogsled
Races. Teams of three human huskies and one pint-
sized musher will by vying for the grand prize of $200
towards their favourite charity.
An outdoor winter festival is guaranteed to give you
a good appetite. Luckily there are some very good
cooks in Kaslo. Grab a hot dog, then choose which
of more than a dozen homemade soups you want for
your lunch. Twirl some bannock on a stick and cook
it yourself over the bonfire, then dip it in spicy apple-
sauce. There will even be some tourtiere a la Lac St
Jean to sample! For a real treat, try out hot sweet and
sticky maple taffy, cooked up and served on a bed of
snow by Serge.
If you have ever wondered what the toads are doing
in February or which Kootenay animal really hiber-
nates, Angus Glass from the Fish & Wildlife Compen-
sation Fund will answer those question and others. A
heated wall tent on site is a good place to warm up
the little ones while they make crafts using materials
gathered from the forest.
What’s new at this year’s festival? Spring Shine and
Chris Petersen of Argenta have been commissioned
to create a sculpture or an art installation out of mate-
rials found onsite (these two artists won the People’s
Choice award at the 2015 Castlegar Sculpturewalk.)
Selkirk Snowcat Skiing is the patron of the Arts for
this exhibition - a contribution that is much appreci-
ated. What will Chris and Spring create? You’ll have to
come to the festival to see!
It’s all free, including your lunch, courtesy of the
Kaslo & District Community Forest Society and the
festival takes place at the Kaslo airport from 10 am till
3 pm, Monday, February 8 (BC Family Day.)

We’re hosting an open house and discussion to update you on the results of a recent risk
assessment regarding public access across the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam. We’d like to hear
your feedback, as the input we receive from the community will assist us in finding a
long-term solution.
A recent risk assessment for the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam determined that allowing traffic to use
the dam deck as a roadway is a high risk activity with serious potential consequences. This is due to
the dam deck’s unusual configuration, poor or obstructed sight lines, driver inattention and failure
to obey posted speed limits. The risk assessment looked at potential options for keeping the dam
deck open for public use, and found that there are no reasonable safety measures that can be put
into place to ensure worker and public safety, and recommends that the dam deck be permanently
closed to public access.

Brian Frisby
The light has gone out. Brian Frisby, of Blewett, BC, died
of melanoma on January 13, 2016, at age 69. He left us too
soon and all who loved him will forever feel his loss.
Brian was a practical, creative and resourceful man, who
followed the principles of reuse and recycle long before
it became mainstream. He mastered many trades from
fishing to waste management, but his favourite career
was fatherhood. He adored his two girls and was very
proud of their accomplishments. He encouraged them to
be strong and resourceful and to follow their dreams.
Brian was a good and quietly generous man. If he saw a
need he would reach into his pocket or offer a hand and
had no need or desire for acknowledgement.
He adored children and animals and they loved him
back. Perhaps one of the worst injustices of his untimely
passage is that he didn’t get to be a grandfather. He would
have the been the best ever and would have loved every
moment.
Brian is survived by his daughters, his mom and brother,
extended family and friends.
No service is planned at this time but there may be a
gathering to celebrate Brian later in the year.
Help out a neighbour, pet a dog, spend time with a child
in his memory. If you would like to do something more
lasting, please make a donation in Brian’s name to the
fund to support Rowan Wiltse, another father’s daughter
currently battling cancer (Kootenay Savings Credit Union,
Kaslo Br #19 Acct 1542612.)
