The ExamView Assessment CD-ROM for Time Zones Books 1 and 2 is an
effective and flexible assessment tool that allows teachers to create tests for specific lessons, units, or even entire books by choosing questions from the lesson banks.
Why Use ExamView ?
ExamView allows teachers to evaluate how well students learned the vocabulary, structures and functions they practiced in a lesson. It also gives teachers an opportunity to evaluate their own teaching process, the materials, and their students progress. ExamView is a great student motivator because students can see and record their progress from test to test. The different question types also allow students to practice thinking about and processing the new information in different ways.
How Does ExamView Work?
Teachers can compose a test easily by using the QuickTest Wizard. Teachers indicate the number of questions and the type(s) of question they want, and the test is created automatically. Teachers can also create their own test by choosing Create a new test from scratch on the main menu. They can then select questions from the question banks according to the book, unit and question type they want to focus on. Teachers can further customize quizzes and tests by combining questions from the question bank(s) with original, teacher-generated questions. Then, they can then simply print out the pre-formatted quiz for the students to take a traditional pencil and paper test. As well as the main unit tests, this assessment CD-ROM contains an additional Listening Test for each unit of Time Zones 1 and 2. Teachers can view these Listening Tests by selecting Open an existing test from the main menu, and selecting the relevant level(s) and unit(s). The audio passages for the Listening Tests are contained on the accompanying audio CD. The scripts for the listening passages are provided on this CD-ROM as PDF and Word files, for the teachers reference. ExamView also allows the test to be administered by computer, or even hosted online on the school website or, for an additional fee, on the ExamView website (www.fscreations.com).
What Does ExamView Include?
The types of questions provided in each test bank mimic the types of questions used on standardized tests of English. The following types of questions are available: multiple choice, true/false, short answer, completion, matching, and essay (a short writing assignment).
Each unit test bank includes questions on grammar, vocabulary,
reading, and conversation (i.e. functional language). There is also one open-ended writing assignment in each test (Essay question type). The additional Listening Test for each unit contains questions that focus on comprehension of meaning (6 items) and sound recognition and other aspects of pronunciation (4 items). Teachers should note that the reading passages and listening passages on this CD-ROM are specially written for this assessment program and are not the same as passages found in the Student Book. However, the passages review many of the language items featured in the Student Book units. There are several fields in ExamView that enable you to customize your tests. You will find that the questions are labeled in several ways to help you sort and choose the question type you desire, for example, by Reference (unit and page number), Objective (e.g. Grammar, Vocabulary), and Topic (e.g. Greetings). These fields allow teachers to customize tests or quizzes to match their teaching styles and instructional objectives. Teachers can let the ExamView Assessment program choose a certain number of questions with a variety of question types by using the QuickTest Wizard. The tests created by the teacher can be saved on a computer and used over and over, or teachers may choose a combination of new and different criteria to create new tests. Additionally, the sequence of questions, and also the possible responses to multiple choice tests, can be scrambled, and multiple versions of the same test can be created. It is recommended, however, that teachers do not scramble the order of questions in the Listening Tests, as the items will no longer match the sequence of tracks on the audio CD. An answer key for all selected questions is automatically generated for the teachers use. As well as answers, the key also contains information on each item, such as objective and topic. The answer key for the Listening tests also lists the track number that corresponds with each question item.
What Other Files are Included on This ExamView CD-ROM?
This Assessment CD-ROM also contains PDFs of the Time Zones Mid-Term and Final tests featured in the Teachers Editions for levels 1 and 2. Teachers may prefer to print these tests out directly using these PDFs, rather than photocopying the test pages in the Teachers Edition. The PDF files also include the scripts and answer keys for the Mid-term and Final tests. The audio portions of the Mid-term and Final tests are included on this CD-ROM as MP3 files. Teachers should note that the questions in the Mid-term and Final tests are different from those in the ExamView Unit Tests and Listening Tests.
