Venice is a beautiful city located in northeast Italy that is famous for its intricate transport

system of interconnected canals. It has been described as the most beautiful city built by man and
one of Europes most romantic cities. Venice is also known for its art, architecture and culture.
History: For centuries Venice was a republic of immense power; controlling trade routes
in the Adriatic, and waging successful wars with rival states. Ruled by a doge, who had his
powers controlled by a cabinet, Venice was a proud and rich republic, known as la Serenissima,
the most serene. Every year the Doge would take part in a symbolic ceremony, the Marriage of
the Sea, to celebrate Venice's mastery over the ocean. Like most great powers, however, Venice's
glory was followed by a decline. La Serenissima lost her chattels in wars, and the city's trade
routes declined in importance. By the eighteenth century, Venetians was already seeking profits
from the tourist trade, leasing fine palazzi to foreign travellers.
Venice captured the impression of a magical floating city by setting wood pilings on the 118
submerged islands in the Northern end of the Adriatic Sea. 400 foot bridges and 170 boat
canals connect the city to make it easily accessible to the local populace.
The "City of Bridges", as it is usually called, stretches along the mouths of the Po and the Piave
rivers.
Also known as a famous place for sweethearts, lovers, artists and poets, Venice is a magical city,
which stretches across numerous small islands. It is often refered to as the city of "gondole",
which are the means of transportation used to cross the numerous canals passing through the city.
GONDOLAS, in fact, are the most famous and romantic means of transportation for
experiencing the city.
The gondola is the symbol of Venice, which has made it famous all over the world.
There is also another type of boat which is a symbol of Venice - the "vaporetti", also called
waterbuses or taxis. Just like any landbus, these water buses have lines that pick/drop-you off at
different points in the city.
In Venice you'll find many historical buildings, both with modern interiors and also with the
traditional designs which are common all over the city.
Another important feature of Venice is the manufacturing of glass on the Murano island, an
artisan activity which has made the city one of the biggest producers of glass in Europe; the
unique high-quality materials they use and the craftsmanship are unrivalled.

The most popular attractions in Venice are:

Gallerie dellAccademia, site of one of Venices oldest scuole grande which now houses
a collection of Venetian art through the ages.
Rialto Bridge, the oldest and perhaps most iconic bridge spanning the Grand Canal.
Bridge of Sighs, one of the most romantic spots in Venice. Legend has it that kissing in a
gondola under the bridge leads to eternal love.
La Boutique del Gelato is considered the some of the best in Europe.
Teatro La Fenice, one of Europes most well-renowned and ornately decorated theatres.
Venetian Arsenal, a series of shipyards and armories that was the center of Italys naval
