Lesson Teaching Reflective Summary

Teacher Candidate for Science Endorsement: Janice Belcher

School: Dowell Elementary

Grade: Fourth

Lesson Topic: Ecosystems- Lesson 1

Write a brief summary or blog of your experiences teaching this lesson,
addressing the following questions:

What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)

This lesson was an introductory lesson in my ecosystem unit. My

student love the BrainPop video. I read the book Who is Eating Who?
There were no major logistical issues with this lesson.

How well were the lessons student performance objectives

attained?

I pre-assessed my student before the lesson to gage student

understanding. The students will review key vocab words such as food
chain, food web, prey, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, Predator,
scavenger, procedures, consumers, decomposers by using I have, who
has game.

Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry,

and sense-making by all students?

In this lesson, students given pictures of different ecosystems.

Students made observations about the pictures. Here are a few things
they observed, Some things that I was from the image were deer,
grass, water, trees, and rocks. Some interaction that might happen in
this ecosystem are the deers might play, fight, and feed each other.
We developed a definition of an ecosystem, environment where the
same type of animals live together. Another one is a place that has a
source of oxygen, food and water.

Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support

students construction of knowledge and understanding of
important scientific concepts and processes?

My student were able to identify essential vocabulary and summarized

the lesson in their journal. I also had my students draw and label an
ecosystem of their choice.

When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will
you do differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.)
to improve student learning for all students?

When I teach this in the future I would like to make more connections
to the ecosystems in our back yard. I felt my students had a clear
understanding of living things dependent on one another however,
they were very interested in ecosystems like the ocean or rainforest.
