OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
OPERATOR CONTROLS
The controls are clearly identified on the control panels. A few
minutes spent getting acquainted w ith them will repay you with
safer, more comfortable and satisfactory operation from the start.
Refer to the accompanying illustrations for location of the controls
described below.
1. THROTTLE CONTROL
Raise throttle lever to increase engine speed; lower to decrease speed.
.M
w
2. CHOKE CONTROL
Raise choke lever to choke when starting the engine. lower slowly
after the engine storts, If the engine is warm and has been funning,
choking may not be necessary to restart it.

3. IGNITION SWITCH
The ignition switch has four positions from left to right : ( 1) off,
(2) run and occessories, (3 ) run, (4) start. To start the engine, turn
the key all the way to the right. Release the key when the engine
starts and it will automotically return to "run" position. The key
must be turned btlck manually to "run and accessories" position
before the electro-magnetic dutch or electrical accessories will
function. When the switch is turned off, the engine stops and all
electrical accessories are turned off as well.

10 . LIGHT SWITCH
Raise toggle switch to turn on head and tail lights. Lower toggle
switch to turn lights off. Lights work only when ignition switch is
in "run and accessories" position.

Before starting the engine, fill the fuel tank with a good grade of
regular gasoline (do not odd oil to the gosoline). Open the fuel
shutoff valve (12, fig. 1) at the left side of the hood stand. Check
the engine oil level and add oil if necessary. Do not overfH l the
crankcase.
Lower attachments and d isen gage the P.LO. clutch. Depress the
clutch pedal and set the parking broke. Raise the throttle ' leve r
about half way. Raise the choke lever as for as it will go. W ith the

right to operate the starter. When the engine starts, release the
key and lower the choke lever. Regulate engine speed with the
throttle.
Chassis Grease
Drain and refill transmission once each year or after e very 100
hours operation whichever occurs first. Droin by removing the plug
at the bottom of th e transaxle.
Use care to prevent dirt, clippings or other foreign material from
entering the transmission when changing oil o r replacing the oil filter.
Replace the oil filter after the flTst 10 hours operation. Thereafter,
replace it after every 100 hours operation or once per year which
ever occurs first.

LUBRICATION
The steering mechanism , front wheel bearings, ond front axle pivot
are equipped with fittings to facilitote lubricatio n with a pressure
greose gun. Lubricate these points after every 8 to 10 hours of
operation. Lubricate more frequently under severe dust conditions.
All other pivoting arms and levers should be lubricated at the
same intervals with either general purpose grease or mach ine oil
applied directly to wear surfaces.

BATTERY
Maintain the electrolyte level above the plates in eoch cell by adding
distilled water as necessary. The best time to add woter is just
prior to operating the troctor so the water will mix with the
solution. Do not overfill the batte ry . The electrolyte solution is
corrosive, and overfilling can cause it to overflow the case and
damage surrounding metal parts. The bottery should be maintained
at 1.260 specific gravity charge. When the battery has been out of
the tractor for servicing, toke care to connect the wires to the
battery exoctly as they were before removal.
CHARGING SYSTEM
om
Form the habit of checking the oil level regu larly. Check oil level
every five (5) operating hours or each time the tractor is used.
To check the oil, position the Iroctor so that the engine is level,
remo ve the dip stick at the right rear of the engine and add
oil if necessary to bring the level up to the mark indicated on the
dip stick. When measuring oil level, be sure dip stick is inserted
into the filler opening as for os it will go. Note: Do not overfill
crankcase.
.c
se
or
For maximum engine protection under all operating conditions encountered during the oil change interva ls shown above, use only
"MS" certified sequencetested o ils. Engine oil s designated only os
"Ml" or " MM" are not recom mended and should not be used.
These classifications are clearly marked on containers of oil refined
and sold by reputable marketers.
TIRES
The Turf Saver tires f ronl and rear are designed and thoroug hl y
tested to meet all norma l operating requirements w ithin the tractor's
capacity when inflated to the pressures listed below:

NEUTRAL ADJUSTMENT
The tractor should not creep cnd the rear wheels shou ld be effective ly
locked when the speed control lever is in neutra l position w ith the
e ngine runn ing . To check for creep, p loce tra ctor on level surface
with e ngine running, a nd depress broke peda l. Creep on slopes is
normal and cannot be entirely elimi nated.
If tractor should creep w hile in neutral position, adjust as follows;

FRICTION ADJUSTMENT
The speed control lever is f riction loaded to hold any se lected speed
in either direction. The tension ha s been adj usted at the factory and
should need little or no attention. If the leve r does not stay where
it is set du ring operation, the f riction may be increased by releasing
the locknut and tightening the collar-friction ad justm ent (loca ted in
front of the seat). The proper amount of friction is obtained when
approximately six pounds of force at the handle grip moves the
control [ever. Be sure to tighten the locknut after proper tension has
been reached. The friction collar is self lubrica ting and dees not
req uire lubrication.
