This year marks the 15th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

offering the community an opportunity to
honor those who lost their lives and the heroes
who responded following the tragic events of
September 11. Two ways to participate in 9/11 Day are to
volunteer or donate blood or platelets with the Red Cross
and help ensure blood is available for patients in need.
9/11 Day has evolved into the largest annual day of charitable engagement in the U.S. and was designated as a
National Day of Service and Remembrance by the U.S.
Congress in 2009.
Jay S. Winuk, co-founder of 9/11 Day, lost his brother
Glenn in the September 11 attacks. Glenn J. Winuk, an
attorney with the law firm Holland & Knight in downtown Manhattan, served as a volunteer firefighter and
EMT for almost 20 years. After helping evacuate the
Holland & Knight offices where he was a partner, he
raced to the nearby World Trade Centers south tower to
participate in the rescue efforts. He died in the line of
duty when that tower collapseda first response medical
kit was found by his side.
With its engagement in 9/11 Day, the Red Cross will
make a significant impact, and were confident that blood
donors from coast-to-coast will answer this call for help
while honoring the heroes of 9/11.

Jersey will host its annual fundraiser, Art
of Two Palettes, in an effort to raise
much-needed funds and awareness about the
mission of the non-profit organization.
This years event will be the 11th annual as
the community is invited to enjoy art, entertainment, fine food and spirits on the grounds of
Elwyn New Jersey at 1667 East Landis Avenue
in Vineland ( just east of Main Road).
The totally tasteful event will feature delicious food from some of the areas finest gourmet
restaurants, wine and vodka bars, and a sampling
of fine craft beers. Fine art objects will be featured in a live auction, and spectacular, themed
gift baskets will be featured in a silent auction.
The event takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. While
the Art of Two Palettes is traditionally an outdoor event, it is a rain or shine gig, which is
completely enclosed in tents in the parking lot of
the facility (it has been moved from the nearby

The Boys & Girls Club of Vineland teen members enjoyed a wonderful day of
kayaking on the Maurice River below Union Lake dam in Millville, NJ. Not only
was this a great recreational field trip for the youth members but it also illustrated
for them the beauty that surrounds us in Cumberland County. The trip was made
possible through the support of Steve Eisenhauer of the Natural Lands Trust.

Group Adds Three New Members
The Tri County Community Rotary Group is
pleased to announce the addition of three new members to its ranks. Inducted into the club on Tuesday,
August 16, pictured from top: Walter Troolin, educator, Vineland Public Schools; Paula Stewart Davis,
counseling, Atlantic Cape Community College; and
Erin Mendez, financial advisor, Ameriprise Financial.
The induction ceremony was officiated by club
chair, Tina Ritondaro, who explained that Rotarians
provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical
standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill
and peace in the world. As signified by the motto
Service Above Self, Rotarys main objective is service, both in the community and in the workplace.
We are thrilled to see our membership grow so
quickly and look forward to involving our newest
members in the work we are doing locally in service
to others, said Ritondaro. The flexibility that our
club offers makes it a great way for busy professionals to give back. We encourage others to attend a
meeting to see what were all about.
The Tri-County Community Rotary Group is an
extension of the South Jersey Rotary E-Club and
serves Atlantic, Cumberland and Gloucester counties.
The club has joined forces with a number of local
organizations to provide support. As part of the
South Jersey Rotary E-Club, it also co-sponsors the
Buena Regional High School Interact Club and the Tri
County Community Interact Club at the YMCA.
Group members meet on the first and third Tuesdays
of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Merighis
Savoy Inn Rose Room. The group formed in March
2016, and has a membership of 40 business professionals.
Rotary International is comprised of 1.2 million
neighbors, friends and community leaders who come together to create positive,
lasting change in communities around the world. The differing occupations, cultures, and countries give members a unique perspective. Their shared passion
for service helps them accomplish the remarkable.

Pinelands K-9 Club will start

the next session of Dog Training
classes on Tesday, September 13.
Classes are held at the Atlantic
County 4-H Center located on
Route 50 between Mays Landing
and Egg Harbor City.
Pinelands K9 Club is now offering the American Kennel Club
(AKC) training program geared
towards puppies and their owners.
The AKC S.T.A.R.sm Puppy
Program rewards responsible owners who take the time to train and socialize their new puppies. The program is the puppy level of the AKCs wellknown Canine Good Citizen program. S.T.A.R. stands for Socialization,
Training, Activity and a Responsible owner, all of the things a puppy needs
to have a good life.
Early training and socialization are key to having a well-behaved dog.
Classes are open to all dogs, whether mixed breed or purebred, and include
AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY Classes, Beginners, as well as competitive obedience
training for Novice, Open and Advanced. Fee for a six-week session is $120.

Freeholders Authorize
Completion of Road Projects
The Cumberland County Board of
Chosen Freeholders unanimously
approved Resolution #2016-378 on August
16, due to concerns with public safety.
This resolution authorizes the County
Engineer to proceed with finalizing partially constructed road projects that were
suspended due to the concern of how
these unfinished road projects could
adversely impact public safety.
Public Works Liaison Freeholder Jim
Quinn said it is unconscionable to leave

these projects unfinished while we wait
for State to lift the ban on road work that
is state funded. Schools will be in session
soon and we have constituents whose
quality of life is being impacted by the
large potholes in the roadways.... I am
very pleased that the entire Freeholder
Board agreed to make this a priority.

the alternate Liaison for Department of
Public Works said that the projects that
we authorized for completion include, CR

Youth Sports Gearing Up for

Fall Season: Register Now!
Throughout the fall, the Cumberland
Cape Atlantic YMCA/YMCA of Vineland
is offering youth sports for youngsters as
young as four years old up to age 14,
depending on the sport. Registration is
going on now at the YMCA. All kids are
encouraged to participate, but space is
limited. This seasons offerings will
include Youth Indoor Instructional

Tennis, Youth Outdoor Soccer, Basketball,
and Teen Strength Training.
The latter class will begin on
September 8; the other classes will begin
later in the month but will have parents
meetings on the evening of Thursday,
September 15. The programs will run
through the second week of November.
Times, fees, and dates vary for each discipline. Each sport will help youth learn
about a specific field while helping them
live a healthier lifestyle.

Move Yourself! Salem County

with Walks and Chair Yoga
The Salem County Department of
Health & Human Services announces the
New Move Yourself! Salem County schedule for the outdoor walk and indoor chair
yoga program. The September 2016 Walk
N Talks will take place on selected dates
at various parks throughout the county.
The indoor chair yoga class will take place
in the Stage Room at The Ware Building,
51 Cheney Road, Woodstown. The Ware
Building is located two miles south of
Woodstown off Route 45 behind the
Salem County Vo-Tech.
The Office of Aging is offering a free
box lunch to participating seniors on
Thursday, September 15 and Tuesday,
September 27. To receive the free-boxed
lunch, the participant must be over 60

years of age, fill out a small registration
form, and RSVP by 8 a.m. the day before.
Seniors must call 856-339-8622 to register
for the boxed lunch. The box lunch is prepared by the Italian Kitchen of Pennsville
and meets the nutrition requirements of
the State Office of Aging.

A free community training session on
the use of NARCAN to save a life from
drug overdose is being offered by the
Salem County Department of Health and
Human Services, Office of Drug and
Alcohol Services.
The free training will be held on
September 21, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at

the Pennsville FOP. Topics include overdose prevention strategies, signs and
symptoms of overdose, how to administer
Naloxone, rescue breathing, overdose prevention legal rights, and general support
information.
A free NARCAN kit will be given to
those attending at the end of the training.Seating is limited to 30 people, but if
the response is overwhelming, another
free training will be added.

in federal funding to the Delaware River &
Bay Authority (DRBA) for the Millville
municipal airport. The funding will go
towards the acquisition of land for additional development.

was originally planned and laid out by Joseph Morton.
Even in fall, the downtown is hopping.
nyone traveling through

Rosenhayn will come across
Morton Avenue, a main thoroughfare that intersects the continuation of Landis Avenue as Route 56.
The street title may not mean much today,
but it bears the name of the man who is
credited with laying out the town in which
it resides. Also noteworthy is the fact that
Joseph Washington Morton was one of
Vinelands earliest pioneers, having moved
to the town established by Charles K.
Landis before the influx of settlers that
began its population growth.
According to the Vineland Historical
Magazine, Morton was born in 1821, and
was a native of Lawrence County,
Pennsylvania. In 1844, he married Mary J.
Curry of Fallston, Beaver County,
Pennsylvania and they eventually set their
sights on New England, moving to
Ashaway, Rhode Island, where the couple
raised seven children. In 1862, Morton
entered a brief military career, serving from
August to December in the army during the
early period of the Civil War. Returning to
Ashaway, he considered his options over
the next six months and, in July 1863, relocated with his family to Vineland, a town
that afforded him business opportunities
and a healthier climate.
Morton purchased a lot of four-and-ahalf acres on Park Avenue in proximity to
the corner of Valley Avenue. He built his
home and established a farm on the
remaining land, but did not limit himself to
agricultural activities. Part of Landis vision
for Vineland included the establishment of
a high-quality educational system, and
Morton became one of its earliest teachers.
He also worked for Landis as a real estate
agent as the number of settlers began to
increase in 1864 and continued to escalate
through the remainder of the decade.
With the establishment of the Siloam
Cemetery Association in 1864, Morton
became its first president. He was also a
charter member of the Vineland Historical
and Antiquarian Society when it was
formed the same year. But real estate seems
to have been his passion and he managed to
expand his own business and sales beyond
the Vineland territory.
The West Jersey History Project reports
that Rosenhayn was originally planned
and laid out by Morton, who copied the
design for Vineland, another planned com-
munity. The Vineland Historical Magazine

explains that this took place in 1866, and
for the next eight years, Morton operated
in real estate in Rosenhayn. However,
according to the West Jersey History
Project, Morton was never able to make
Rosenhayn a serious rival to Vineland during this period.
In 1874, Morton departed Vineland for
Camden before eventually returning to
Rhode Island. He served as a missionary
for the Reformed Presbyterian Church and
the Vineland Historical Magazine places
him in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he
wrote Vindication of the True Sabbath in
Two Parts, first published in 1876. Part One
of the book is described as A Narrative of
Recent Events and Part Two as Divine
Appointment of the Seventh Day.
Following the death of his wife in 1884,
he relocated to Chicago where, according
to the Vineland Historical Magazine, he was
employed as a general missionary of the
Seventh Day Baptist Mission Society.
On September 17, 1885, Morton married
Jane C. Bond in Milton Massachusetts.
According to The Sabbath Recorder, Bond
taught at Milton College for 18 years before
becoming Mortons second wife.
There is not much information available
on Mortons final years. According to the
Adventist Digital Library, he died in 1893,
but there is no mention of where he
resided in his later years or where his final
resting place is located. But there are several interesting links that continued to connect him to this region. Mortons first wife,
Mary, is interred at Siloam Cemetery and
his Park Avenue homestead was eventually
purchased by Mary Treat, whose accomplishments in the fields of botany and entomology are well-known along with her professional correspondence with Charles
Darwin.
And then theres Rosenhayn, the settlement Morton left behind. When he relocated, he forfeited the opportunity to witness its development as a Jewish agricultural settlement over the next several
decades. According to the 2010 United
States Census, this unincorporated
Deerfield Township community has a population of just over 1,000 residents today.
And many of them are part of the daily
traffic on an avenue that remains the only
vestige of Mortons involvement with this
location. I

downtown Vineland will remain
hot with activity. We have a full
plate of events that were planning
events that cover the gamut of what Main
Street Vineland is all about. Were still
finalizing some plans and some other
events could be added, but this will whet

Landis Avenue and the Boulevard. Main
Street Vineland volunteers, augmented by
local school and community groups, help
clean up the mini-parks and other downtown focal points and ready them for the
planting of flowers the following week.

and shop on Landis Avenue. Then, another Pokmon GO Walkfollowing up on
the tremendous response of the walk during last months Fourth Friday, which
brought out over 200 enthusiasts. Stay on
at the mini-park at the southwest corner
of Landis Avenue and the Boulevard for a
free showing of the hit film Angry Birds.
In case of inclement weather, the film will
take place at Landis MarketPlace, 631 E.
Landis Ave. Fourth Friday will also feature
karaoke night at Friends & Family Diner,
601 E. Landis Ave. and an open house at

Weekend will return to Landis Avenue for

from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This is a great opportunity for downtown merchants and the
public to network and get to know each
other in an informal atmosphere over light
refreshments.
Week of October 10Just in time
for the Halloween season, were planning
a Scarecrow Contest and were partnering
with the Vineland schools on this. Schools
and other organizations will participate by
designing scarecrows that will adorn
downtown lampposts. The public will be
able to vote for the best scarecrows. More
information will follow.
Wednesday, October 19Our next
broker tour, part of an ongoing aggressive
plan to re-brand downtown Vineland to
the millennial generation, will be an
opportunity for area real estate brokers
and agents to tour vacant retail, office, and
restaurant properties along downtown
Landis Avenue. It will take place from 12
to 4 p.m., starting with a light lunch and
an introductory talk at the Main Street
Vineland office, 603 E. Landis Avenue.

Mary L. "Aunt Beebe" Testa, 99, of

Vineland, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at her residence in Baker Place,
Vineland, NJ on Monday, August 29, 2016.
Mary was born in Vineland to Guistino
"Steve" and Giacinta "Jean" Testa on April
10, 1917. A lifelong resident of Vineland,
Mary graduated from Vineland High
School, worked for a number of years at
Bardfeld's Dress Store and later as a bank
teller at several Vineland banks. She
enjoyed baking for the holidays and
church functions. She was a long-time
member of Memorial Presbyterian Church
where she sang in the choir. Mary was a
loving caregiver for her mother and sister
and valued her family above all else.
God called Josefa Aponte, age 88 of
Vineland, to Her Eternal Paradise on
August 30, 2016. Josefa was born on
March 19, 1928 in Barranquitas, Puerto
Rico. She left her earthly body while at
home surrounded by her family and
friends. osefa was a loving mother and
very dedicated to her family. She moved
from Manhattan NY to Vineland in 1968.*
She was a women of strong faith and
belief in the Lord. Blessed with a pure
loving heart to serve , Josefa was a lifelong
member of the "Spanish Catholic Center",
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church of the
Divine Mercy Parish. She had a passion
for helping others in her community. You
could always count on Josefa to feed her
neighbors, donating to someone in need,
offering a prayer of comfort, or giving
sound advice.
Dr. Ronald "Ronnie" S. Markizon, 73, of

Vineland and Ventnor, NJ, passed away on
Wednesday, August 31, 2016 with his family and friends by his side. Ronnie was
married to his wife, Joan, for more than
50 years. They have three children, Jodi,
Jamie (Jennifer) and Jason (Adeline), and
5 grandchildren, Julie, Jacob, Zachary,
Rachael and John. He was the older
brother to Bruce Markizon and Joy
Raphael. Ronnie loved and was cherished
by his wonderful mother-in-law, Nana
Dot.Ronnie was a treasured husband,
father and grandfather, and truly lived for
his family. He was a close friend to so
many, uncle, cousin and nephew to others,
and loved by all. He was an extremely

respected podiatrist, dedicated to and
adored by his patients. He was very fortunate to work with a wonderful staff, who
affectionately referred to him as "Dr. M",
or "Dad". He coached soccer, played tennis, travelled, and was an active 40-year
member of Congregation Beth Israel. He
especially enjoyed organizing the weekend tennis games for all the guys.
Jerome J. Atkinson, 83, of Vineland, NJ

passed away on Wednesday morning
August 31, 2016. Jerry was born & raised
in Logansport, Ind and has resided in
Vineland since 1968. He was the husband
of the late Betty E. Atkinson who died in
2012. Jerry served in the U.S. Air Force
during the Korean & Vietnam Wars retiring as a Technical Master Sgt in 1972. He
also served as the Air Force Recruiter in S.
Jersey for many years. After retirement he
turned his love of bowling into his next
career working for John Campagna at
Pike Lanes bowling alley where he
worked as the Mgr until retiring in 2011.
He was an avid Phillies baseball fan & also
enjoyed fishing. Jerry was known to be a
good bowler and once had a 298 game, but
his proudest achievement are his children!
Nehemias Bermudez Sr. age 76 of
Vineland, went home to be with the Lord,
on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at home. Nehemias
was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico to the
late Eladio and Juana (Lugo) Bermudez
and lived in Vineland most of his life.
Prior to retirement, he was a HVAC
Technician for Buena Plumbing and
Falasca Mechanical for 30 years. He was a
member of the Spanish Pentecostal
Assembly of God Church, Vineland.
Nehemias enjoyed sharing the Gospel
with people. He also enjoyed home renovation projects, gardening, music, singing
and sharing time with family and friends.
Robert J. Franzoi, age 82 of Vineland,
went to be with the Lord on Wednesday,
August 31st, 2016 at Penn Presbyterian
Medical Center, Philadelphia.Bob was
born in Vineland to the late Joseph and
Francis (Aulen) Franzoi and was a lifelong
resident of Vineland. After 30 years of
service for AT & T, Bob retired and went
to work as a contractor. He loved travel
and gardening, and spent many winters in
Florida. His faith, family and friends were
a focus for his life. Bob was predeceased
by his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy.

The columnist recalls her dads love of mushrooms.
y dad was a real mushroom

aficionado. As soon as the
first autumn leaves would
start to fall, he would sneak
out early on crisp Saturday mornings
searching for the wild mushrooms he knew
he would find out in the Landisville area.
He had one secret location out in the
woods behind Friendship Cemetery, and
the pickins would be especially plentiful
after a rain.
At days end, he would bring home his
smelly little treasures and then the cooking
would begin. He would make all kinds of
goodies with his stash and my favorites
were the pickled mushroom condiment
that he put up in jars for the winterlaced
with fresh sage leaves and garlic. I also
liked the simple saute of mushrooms hed
make as a side dish to be served up with a
juicy rare porterhouse steak.
I think that if we had lived in Italy we
would have lost him for days out hunting
for truffles and he would probably have
had a pet pig to accompany him.
You have to be very careful with wild
mushrooms or else you could end up with a
dish fit for only the Borgias. So, unless you
know what youre doing, feel free to use the
white button variety or portobello for this
recipe. I like to use the Bread City whole
wheat round loaf that I get in ShopRite and
I just found out from Rose, the deli manager
at the East Vineland store, that she does
have burrata. Just wait until you taste it.
There is nothing like it! It is in the deli section and ask for help if you dont see it. Dad
would have loved this with a crisp cold beer.

A Taste of Vineland & Volunteer Recognition Event
1 1/2 tsp. chopped rosemary

1 tsp. finely grated lemon zest
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more
for brushing
Salt and freshly ground pepper
16 slices of peasant bread
1 pound burrata cheese, cut into 16
slices
In a large bowl, toss the mushrooms with

the garlic, rosemary, lemon zest and the 1/2
cup of olive oil and let stand for 1 hour.
(This recipe calls for grilling, but you
can saute mushrooms in a skillet and toast
the bread in the oven.)
Light a grill. Spread the mushrooms on a
lightly oiled perforated aluminum foil or
grill tray and season with salt and pepper.
Grill over moderately high heat, stirring
occasionally, until browned, about 8 minutes. Brush the bread with oil and grill,
turning once, until toasted, 1 minute.
Top the toasts with the mushrooms. Top
each with a slice of burrata and serve. I

Main Street Vinelands signature fundraising event, A Taste of Vineland &

Volunteer Recognition Event, will return on Wednesday, October 26, from 6 to
9 p.m. at the Greenview Inn at Eastlyn Golf Course. 4049 Italia Ave., Vineland.
The major sponsor for this event, now in its sixth year, is Century Savings

Cumberland County Technical Education Center had a historical day on

Thursday, August 25, when it welcomed 240 full-time freshmen to the schools
very first freshman orientation. The students and their parents arrived at 9 a.m.
and were ushered to the gymnasium, which seats 1,800 people. The stands were
not quite full but approximately 600 people filled them with excitement of a new
beginning.
The CCTEC first family was welcomed by Principal Greg McGraw and Board of
Education President Dan Vivarell, who stood at center court on a freshly painted
logo that will be the pride of all students. Each expressed their thanks for the
families who were in attendance and they praised the diligent construction of the
newest high school in Cumberland County. The school leaders also thanked the
students who had chosen to take on an education that they will not regret. The
school is ready to begin on September 12.
During the orientation, the first inaugural photo was taken in front of the
school with our director of security, Andre Lopez, manning the camera from a
cherry picker for the overhead shot. The two-hour orientation then broke up
where parents were escorted to the cafeteria and addressed by Assistant
Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Mario Olsen. Mr. Olsen laid out
many of the wonderful things the students would be encountering throughout
their high school years. One particular exciting bonus to CCTEC students is the
1:1 initiative where students will receive their own Chromebook. Many of the
classes the students will be seated in will be facilitated in an electronic platform
where their device will be much like their textbook.
The students were divided into their chosen Career and Technical programs
and were led through four stations at the school. Each group had an administrator and multiple teachers, who came voluntarily, to meet the first class of
CCTEC. The activities included locker relays, where students learned how to
open their personal locker. For some it was the first time they experienced the
process of a combination lock and that right of passage into high school. The
gymnasium activity was led by CCTECs two Health and PE teachers who
planned activities so that students got to know their classmates in creative ways.
At the conclusion of the activities, the students were reunited with their parents
who they took on a tour of the school and followed their personal schedule and
met some of their teachers.
The orientation was well attended and there was a lot of excitement for the
start of school on September 12.
CCC Names New Director of Admissions and

Recruitment
Cumberland County College is pleased to announce that Joseph P. Rooney
has been named its Director of Admissions and Recruitment.
Currently residing in Wilmington, Delaware, Rooneys roots are in northern
New Jersey where he attended Ramapo College of New Jersey, earning a bachelors degree in history.
On the job for little more than a month, Rooney quickly became immersed in
what he finds to be a close-knit community of professionals. I was attracted to
Cumberlands environment its hometown feel and its beautiful campus, he
said. It will be nice to have the ability to interact with our students.
Prior to coming to Cumberland County College, Rooney worked with students
interested in entering the medical field as the Associate Director of Admissions
for the Ross University School of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine of Houston,
Texas. Hed also served as an admissions advisor, Admissions Coordinator and a
New Student Coordinator there.
Rooney said he brings a fresh, outside view to how the college provides services to its students, their families and the career world. I think it will be a nice
change, not only for students, but for the business side of operations, he said.
There is a unique structure to what we do here, as we strive to provide the best
producteducationto our students. I hope to enhance how we function as an
institution, and how well we serve our students educationally and professionally.

Rooney holds a Master of Business
Administration from Keller Graduate
School of Management, and is working
on a masters degree in Human
Resource Management from Keller. He
hopes to pursue a doctoral degree in
the future.
Im big on lifelong education,
Rooney said. I think its important to
continue your own education, and in doing so myself, I have a better understanding of how to assist students in advancing their education.
A self-described outdoors guy, Rooney enjoys hiking and biking. I think its
better to get out and move than sit home on the couch, he said with a grin. I
enjoy traveling and Im trying to see as much of the world as possible. He
recently traveled to Ireland and Brazil.
For now, Rooneys world revolves around spreading the word about all that
Cumberland County College has to offer students. Were on a good path to
attract students to the No. 1 two-year college in the state, he added.
Biennial
Checkup
This 14-year cancer survivor has savored watching
her children grow to adulthood.
ell, I just got back from my

biennial visit to University
of Pennsylvania Hospital
for an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) checkup.
Although my brain cancer has not
returned in 14 years, theres a problem if it
does: They already did whole brain radiation and cannot do it again. My best shot
is catching a lesion while its small and
can be removed with a laser pen. It
behooves me to follow up.
So much has changed in the hospitals
neighborhood in the past two years. Penn
Tower garage, my usual place to park, is
now a pile of rubble inside a fence amid a
cemetery of scaffolding and noisy cranes.
They now have a parking garage for my
wing of the hospital, but it was raining
and I zipped right past it. In a panic, I
drove three blocks to the next garage and
walked back to the hospital entrance,
which is no longer the main entrance but
took me where I needed to go.
I always try to schedule the earliest
appointment so that I dont get caught in
commuter traffic. Also, if I get scanned
early, I can visit my oncologist later that
day and he can access my results and pronounce me not cured, not normal, not
healthy, but no changes. Bless his bedside manner.
I was early for my MRI appointment,
so they showed me very deliberately the
way to the locker room so that I could
disrobe, take my jewelry off and step into
hospital socks with designer gummy soles
for traction. Truly fetching.
Then I wrestle myself into a tent-sized
gown that opens in the back and is so
voluminous as to gape even when tied
closed. Then I put on a matching robe that
opens in front becausetrust me when I
tell youno one wants to see that first
thing in the morning.
I skate out of the locker room stripped
of all dignity and invariably sit with several other ladies who are shaking with
dread because the outcome of their scans

could change their futures. Also, some
suffer from claustrophobia, and being
rolled into a narrow tunnel might trigger
an episode.
I try to smile at each reassuringly. Ive
been scanned so many times I could walk
around the corner with that MRI tube
strapped around me and order a pastrami
sandwich and not even notice until I tried
to eat.
Do not ask how I know this.
The tech comes to walk me to the MRI
room, asking me personal questions, just
to make sure I have no shrapnel hidden in
my body, and that Im not allergic to latex
or the dye they inject into my brain for
contrast.
Actually, its a privilege to take this test,
because even though it has been years, I
still like to hear good results.
When I was first diagnosed, my daughter was just 3 years old. I cried every night
after tucking her in, and asked God, How
am I going to say goodbye to Therese? She
still needs me. Already she has abandonment issues. If I go out to the garage
before her just to start the car heater, she
screams, Mommy, dont leave me!
We didnt believe she knew I was sick,
but she started asking, You arent going
away, are you Mommy?
And I would answer: No, honey, Im
not going anywhere.
Hoping it was true.
I got my miracle. My daughter is now a
senior in high school and planning to
leave home soon. I have watched her grow
and become a confident teen with a very
strong NO, which we hope she will use on
every mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging
male who asks her to dance.
I am eternally grateful for the ability to
see her safely grown.
But now, watching her stride out the
door to her car, a voice inside me cries
out:
Dont leave me! I
The Vineland Downtown Improvement District, along with the Vineland

Public Schools, is hosting a Scarecrow Challenge contest in the month of
October.
Students of all age levels are asked to create a scarecrow for display
along Landis Avenue. The scarecrows will be affixed to lampposts along the
street and judged on creativity and design. Participants may pick up frames
for supporting the scarecrows upon request. The deadline to enter a scarecrow is October 14.
All local schools, clubs and organizations are invited to participate. This
contest is open to private and parochial schools as well as public schools.

Doggie Daycare Olympians Take the Gold!

While Team USA was winning medals in Rio, the doggie
daycare guests were medaling
at Pampered Pup Luxury Pet
Resort! All of the daycare dogs
enjoyed two weeks of the
Olympic Games. The dogs all
participated in each days
unique event. Events included
swimming, basketball, beach
volleyball, tennis, equestrian,
soccer and boxing. The entire
staff was able to enjoy the
excitement of the games. The
dogs had a grand time playing
the variety of games the daycare staff had planned. Games
included playing with a bucket
full of tennis balls and enjoying some hoops Air Bud style. Of course all the daycare dogs went home with their very own gold medals to commemorate the epic
event. Pampered Pup is thrilled with the support the games received and the
amount of exposure on social media and is looking forward to the next theme, a
Labor Day BBQ, followed by back to school photo fun!

the Kejzman FamilyHelen, Lilly and
Sherry (Soutiere) Kejzmanand
salute the late Harry Kejzman at an
awards ceremony being held on
Wednesday, October 5, at Merighis
Savoy Inn in Vineland.
The Kejzmans will receive the prestigious 2016 Mental Health
Distinguished Community Leadership
Award for their outstanding contributions and dedicated service to the
greater Cumberland County area.
They will be recognized for their many
accomplishments in economic development and for their work supporting
health and education in our local and
regional community, making it a better place through leadership, volunteerism, advocacy, and philanthropy

Scores Entered for Countys First Race

through Time
A free county-wide event that ran July
1 through August 28 attracted 150 visitors
to 12 participating Cumberland County
historic sites. Organized by Vineland
Historical & Antiquarian museum curator, Patricia Martinelli, and Cumberland
County Historical Society president Linda
Hruza-Jones, visitors registered for a free
passport at any participating site. If stamped at a minimum of six different sites
before August 28, the visitor was eligible to win prizes at the end of the event.
Site visitors were given mementos at each site, and
each site also contributed items for the prize drawing.
VHAS trustee, Katrina DAllesandro assembled the
prizes for the drawing, which were donated by local
businesses and individuals. The event was sponsored in
part by a grant from the Cumberland County Cultural
and Heritage Commission.
