ROUGH CARPENTRY

PART 1

GENERAL

1.1

SCOPE OF WORK
This section shall include all management, labor, materials, tools, equipment and
services required to furnish and install all rough carpentry and framing as shown in
the drawings in accordance to the Conditions of the Contract Documents and as
specified herein.

1.3

SUBMITTALS
1.3.1 Submit Manufacturers instruction, product data, catalog and brochures
indicating product that the meets specifications indicated herein.
1.3.2 Furnish material certificates of the lumber and wood products showing
design values for selected species, grade, treatment and testing procedures
that the product has undergone from an authorized testing agency. Include
in the certification chemicals and processes used and net amount of
preservatives retained and conformance to applicable standards.
1.3.3 Furnish the following samples materials:
A. Lumber with or for transparent finish; 300mm in length, for each species
and cut, finished on one side and one edge. Indicate grain direction for
solid lumber and veneer.
B. Rough hardware, one unit of each type and finish.

1.4

QUALITY ASSURANCE
1.4.1 Manufacturer shall be firms of long-term operation, technically proficient and
experienced in this trade and has accomplished works similar to the project
specifications.
1.4.2 Materials shall bear proper identification of grade trademark, dimension and
species.

1.5

DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

1.5.1 Materials shall not be delivered before they are required for proper conduct
of the work.
1.5.2 Protect work, under cover from damage during storage, handling,
installation and until date of substantial performance as per manufacturers
instructions.

Technical Specifications

Store materials to prevent deterioration or the loss or impairment of their

structural and other essential properties. Do not store materials in areas
subject to high humidity and areas where masonry and concrete work are
not completely dried out.

1.6

WARRANTY
Provide manufacturer's standard warranty in print, being accountable of the repair
and replacement of units with identified damages within the warranty stated. The
warranty shall not limit the Owner rights against the Contractor but shall append the
said privileges provided in the Contract Documents.

1.7

PROJECT CONDITIONS
Maintain environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, and ventilation,
within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install
products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

PRODUCTS

All materials shall be new and free of bow, warp, or twist. Pieces with serious defects
will be discarded regardless of grading.
Rough carpentry shall be done true to lines, levels and dimensions. It shall be
squared, aligned, plumbed and well fitted at joints.
Lumber Surfaces shall be surfaced four sides (S4S), unless otherwise specified or
indicated on the Drawings. All lumber surfaces in contact with concrete and masonry
shall receive one brush of bituminous paint.
Use Tanguile or Yakal species of good grade, treated and kiln-dried, in standard
commercial size and thickness as indicated in the drawings, for the following:
2.4.1 25mm x50mm, 50mm x 50mm, 50mm x 75mm and 50mm x 100mm lumber
for wood framing, nailers and studs. (verify architectural details)
2.4.2 5 and 12mm thick ribbon grain plyboard for backing and under sheathing
(Verify Drawings).
2.4.3 All other rough woodwork not identified herein but shall take part of
installations as project conditions may require.
At the time of installation, the maximum moisture content for rough carpentry and
framing, expressed as a percentage of the weight of the over-dry wood, shall be as
follows:
Framing lumber 50 mm and less in thickness

2.6

Nails, screw, bolts and straps shall be provided as indicated and used where suitable
for fixing carpentry and joinery works. All fasteners shall be brand new and of
adequate size to ensure rigidity of connections.

2.7

Nails of adequate size shall be steel wire, diamond-pointed, ribbed shank and bright
finish.

Wood screws of adequate size best suited for the purpose shall be cadmium or brass
plated steel with slotted head. Lag screws of adequate size, for framing in concrete
or masonry, shall be galvanized steel.

2.9

Bolts and nuts shall be of steel having a yield point of not less than 245 MPa. Bolts
shall have square heads and provided with standard flat steel washers and
hexagonal nuts. The threaded portion shall be long enough such that the nut can be
tightened against the bolted members without any need for blocking. The bolts
threaded end shall be finished smooth for ease of engaging and turning of the nut.

2.10

Angles bars, brackets and straps, when required in conjunction with bolts or lag
screws to provide proper anchorage, shall be of the shape and size shown on the
Plans.

2.11

Expansion shields shall be of the type, size, class and style best suited for the
intended use or as indicated. Shield shall be accurately recessed and unless
otherwise indicated shall be not less than 64 mm into concrete or masonry.

2.12

Glue shall be high performance wood adhesive made from water resistant resins
which, upon hardening, shall not dissolve nor lose its bond or holding power even
soaked with water for extended period.

PART 3

EXECUTION

3.1

Examine all surfaces or areas to receive framing and notify the Architect for
unsatisfactory conditions prior installations. Review Contract Documents to determine
and locate all block outs for support and supplemental framing required by other
trades.

3.2

Lumber and woodwork shall be covered and protected from the elements until used.
Building shall be thoroughly dry before the finish is placed in them.

3.3

Use sound, thoroughly seasoned materials of standard commercial dimensions. Sort

out and discard warped and defective material which would impair quality of work.

3.4

Execute work using procedures according to best practice, as specified herein and
indicated on drawings. Lay out work carefully and to accommodate work of other
trades. Accurately cut and fit; erect in proper position true to dimensions; align,
level, square, plumb, adequately brace, and secure permanently in place. Join work
only over solid backing.

3.5

Unless otherwise shown, studs for wood framing shall be spaced 0.40 m or 0.60 m
on centers. Studs shall be doubled at openings. Unless otherwise indicated, headers
for openings shall be made of two pieces of stud material set on edge or solid
lumber of equivalent size, and corners shall be constructed of not less than three full
members.

End studs of partitions abutting concrete or masonry shall be anchored thereto with
expansion bolts; one near each of each stud and at intermediate intervals of not
more than 1.20 meter.

3.7

Plates of partitions resting on concrete floor shall be anchored in place with

expansion bolts; one near each end of each piece and at intermediate intervals of
not more than 1.80 m between bolts, except anchoring into concrete may be with
powder-driven threaded studs of suitable type and size, and at 0.90 m. on center in
lieu of bolts. Walls and bearing partitions shall be provided with double top plates
with members lapped at least 0.60 m and well spiked together.

3.8

Blocking for fire-stopping shall be provided so that the maximum dimension of any
concealed space is not over 1.80 meter. Corner bracing shall be installed when
required by the type of sheeting used or when siding other than panel siding is
applied directly to studs. Corner bracing shall be let into the exterior surfaces of the
studs at an angle approximately 45 degrees, shall extend completely over wall
plates, and shall be secured at each bearing with two nails.

3.9

All rough hardware in exposed work shall be set. Perform pre-drilling methods and
install fasteners without splitting wood.

3.10

Required cutting to accommodate other trades such as electrical and mechanical

work shall be braced, blocked and framed by the Contractor in charge and be left
ready for carpentry works. Weak framing conditions created by other trades shall be
corrected as per Architects approval and shall be done at the Contractors expense.

3.11

All installations shall be clean and ready to receive finish application as indicated. All
materials not used or extraneous to the Works specified herein shall be removed
from the property upon completion of work.
