The History of Minster Oktoberfest

On October 12, 1810, the citizens of Munich were invited to
the Royal Wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become
King Ludwig I, and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The festivities were held on the fields in front of the
city gates. The fields have been named Thereseienwiese
(Theresas fields) in honor of the Crown Princess ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the
Wiesn.
Horse races in the presence of the Royal Family marked the
close of the event that was celebrated as the festival for the whole
of Bavaria. The decision to repeat the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise to the tradition of the event, which would
later be dubbed Oktoberfest. In 1811, an added feature to the
horse races was the first Agricultural Show, designed to boost
Bavarian agriculture. Area brewers set up stands to sell their
bierand carousels and swings were added for amusement.
What evolved from those early years has become the worlds
largest public festival. Steeped in tradition of the Bavarian region, the annual Munich Oktoberfest is attended by over seven
million people a year. They come to celebrate the heritage and
culture of the area.
Founded by German immigrants in 1832 as Stallostown, the
village of Minster and its residents share a deep pride in their
ancestry, and it was only natural that a festival similar to the Munich Oktoberfest would be initiated to celebrate the towns own
unique heritage. So it was that in 1975 the first Minster Oktoberfest came to be. But the idea for that first festival was not as obvious as one would now think. It took a road sign in a distant
town to start the wheels turning. Working as Tax Commissioner
Agent for the state of Ohio in the early 1970s, Minster native
Jim Donauer was assigned to travel in southwest Ohio doing audits. On a trip to the village of West Alexandria, Donauer came
across a small park in the middle of town where a sign was
posted reading, Home of the Oktoberfest. When he first saw
that sign, his first reaction was Why doesnt Minster have a
German Festival?
By 1974 Donauer was no longer working for the state, and
had moved back to Minster. The local Kiwanis Club (now Minster Service Club), which had formed a few years earlier, was
looking for a fundraising event. Donauer remembered that sign
in West Alexandria and mentioned the idea of an Oktoberfest.
The event in West Alexandria was going on at about that time,
so John Farno and myself visited the festival, Donauer said.
Thats where we got the idea for the buttons. We reported back
to the Kiwanis and began the task of planning for our own Oktoberfest.
Another Minster civic group, the Jaycees (now The Journeymans Club), was already working with the Kiwanis Club in trying to come up with a fundraising event, and it was decided that
the two organizations would form a joint committee to plan the
event. Dale Mescher joined the Jaycees after he graduated from
college in 1974. I caught wind that a group was investigating a
fundraiser to replace the annual Fathers Day Picnic, Mescher
said. We wanted to have an event that would celebrate our heritage and include the whole town. As a result, it was known that

we had to do something different. Not wanting to compete with

other summer events in the area, and the fact that the Oktoberfest was a traditional German event, said Mescher, it didnt
take much time to agree that it was a good fit for Minster.
In hopes for getting the best possible weather conditions, the
first weekend of October (the 4th and 5th), was set, and the planning began. Mescher agreed to be co-chair for the Jaycees, while
Donauer would play a similar role for the Kiwanis Club. The
planning began a year in advance. Dates were set, committees
were formed, and all that was needed was money, bands and,
oh yes, a park to hold the event.
Council had just completed the park behind the swimming
pool and that was our first choice, but they said no. We then
asked to use the Fourth St. Park. They approved that, but would
not approve the closing of Lincoln St.
Next came the money. Donauer and Mescher made an appointment with Mel Vallo, president of the Minster State Bank,
and signed a note for $1,500. That was our budget for 1975. We
scheduled a dance, thinking we would raise more money. We
brought the Maumee Valley Polka Band to the K of C Hall for a
preview of the music and we broke even. We thought we were
doomed, but we persevered, meeting with numerous organizations and organizing a hardworking committee. We knew that
for the Oktoberfest to be successful we had to get the entire community involved. One way to do that was to have various civic
organizations set up stands and keep their profits.
One of the first events on the drawing board was a parade,
and Rolly Hausfeld agreed to organize the event. The committee
also built their own parade float in the summer of 1975. We really had a good time building that float. It brought so many people together and made the committee one happy family. We
would go to any parade we could and invited everyone to attend
our Oktoberfest. This float turned out to be our best form of advertising.
With most of the planning and a lot of hard work behind
them, the committee met with organizations the week prior to
the festival to review the park layout. The Thursday before the
Oktoberfest, the committee moved picnic tables from Lake Loramie to the park. Then, on Friday night, most of the tents and
booths were set up, as the volunteers entertained themselves
with a few radios and lots of good fellowship.
It was close to a full moon that night and there was a frost.
Saturday turned out to be a gorgeous autumn day bright and
sunny, with the temperature in the mid-70s. People came early
and stayed late.
C&G Distributors had brought what they said would be
more than enough beer for the weekend. Nearly all of the reserves had been gone through by the end of Saturday. Sunday
proved to be another beautiful day, as hundreds lined the streets
for the first Oktoberfest parade.
The first Oktoberfest was a success no matter how you measure it. It was truly a community effort and only through that effort could it have been so. The bank loan was paid off and plans
got underway for the second Oktoberfest.

An Invitation to You...
An invitation is extended to each of you to join us and help celebrate our Oktoberfest. The Minster
OktOberfest began in 1975, initiated by the JCs (The Minster Journeymans Club) and the Kiwanis
(Minster Service Club). Its estimated that over 80,000 people come to Minster during the weekend of Oktoberfest.
The fun-filled festival provides delights for all. Come sing and dance to GerMan Music, partake of
hearty GerMan fOOds, and watch the wonderful OktOberfest Parade featuring numerous colorful floats, area marching bands, and celebrities. See the many events taking place in the Gazebo and the
Spass Platz. Take part in the beer traY reLaY, the OktOberfest 10k run, and numerous other
games. You wont want to miss the large arts & crafts area.
People of Minster feel the Oktoberfest is not just an event. Its a feeling, a spirit, a happy mood, combined
with warmth and friendship of the community. This years Oktoberfest we are sure will be an enjoyable
one. Its a great way to spend an early fall weekend with the entire family.

Please Come & Enjoy the Minster Oktoberfest!

The Reason for the Success of Minster Oktoberfest

What is the reason for the success of the Minster Oktoberfest? Some
people say the great thing is being able to stand in the middle of Fourth
St. and drink a beer. Some people say its the time of year, the last chance
to get out before the weather turns bad. The types of food, the size of the
crowd, the free entertainment, the Arts & Crafts, the parade, and the 10K
Run are all things that have been mentioned. All of these things help make
the Minster Oktoberfest what it is. No ONE thing makes it successful.
One thing that plays a major role in the success of this event is the
people in the community working together to make it the best possible.
The first people that spring to mind are the various village government
departments, the many organizations, and the volunteers that come out
before and after the festival to help. Also, the neighbors that put up with
the hassle every year, that person who helps you build something, and
your neighbor who allows you to keep things stored in the corner of their
garage. Those people you dont think about, but without their generosity,
their help and kindness, the Minster Oktoberfest would not be what it is
today.
Another thing that helps keep the Oktoberfest great is the ability to
adapt and change with the times. Looking back over the years, there have
been many things that have changed. Many times the changes are small,
hardly noticeable, from the previous year. Some changes have been to
try something new and better. Other times the changes have been to adapt
to the crowd size and demand.
The size of the crowd has grown and changed over the years. The
crowd was said to be about 10,000 to 30,000 the first several years. Its
been estimated that the crowd has been over 100,000 a few times. Today,
its said that over 80,000 people regularly attend the Minster Oktoberfest.
The increase in crowd numbers has caused many things to change.
In the beginning, the Minster Oktoberfest was only held Saturday and
Sunday. Friday was a set-up day, with Saturday being being the first day

and Sunday being the BIG DAY. In 1978, when the stands started to open
up on Friday night, the crowd was fairly small and local. People used to
say that the amount of food and drinks consumed on Friday night could
be added to Saturday, and that would be what would be gone through on
Sunday.
Now, that crowd has shifted. Saturday is the biggest day/night by far.
Some food vendors say they do over one-third of their business on Friday
night in the several hours that they are open.
The money taken in during the Minster Oktoberfest goes directly to
the various organizations that have booths. The Minster Oktoberfest
Committee gets a percentage of their profits to help pay for the cost of
security, sanitation, clean-up, free entertainment, advertising, tents, plots,
awards, etc.
The number of organizations participating changes from year to year.
As few as 12 organizations took part the first couple of years, with as
many as 30 organizations in recent years. The amount of revenue generated for the individual organizations has varied from year to year.
The Minster Oktoberfest has experienced just about every type of
weather there is. There has been rain, snow, hail, wind, sun, dry conditions, and many other types of weather. There have been many times
when the weather has been perfect.
With family and friends all around, plenty to eat and drink, and things
to do, you would be hard pressed to find a more enjoyable way to spend
the weekend.
As you can see, with the Minster Oktoberfest there is not one thing
that makes it what it is. Its all the little things that add up. Its all the
planning and hard work put into it. Its all the people that come from
miles around. Its the people willing to make a small sacrifice to keep the
Minster Oktoberfest what it is today.
THE MINSTER OKTOBERFEST IS YOU!!!

A Little History About the Village of Minster

In 1832, a group of people
led by Franz Joseph Stallo
formed a settlement which, at
the time, became Stallostown.
They bought 640 acres for
$800 in silver. The site was divided into 144 lots. Life at that
time was one of deprivation
and adversity. It was on
March 5, 1839, that the village
was incorporated as Minster,
deriving its name from the
city in Germany.
The small village, which
still retains a rich heritage
from our German ancestors,
was the main link between old
Fort Loramie, located three
miles south, and St. Marys
(Girty Town), located 10 miles
to the north. Later, when the
Miami and Erie Canal was
built, Minster was centrally located and this produced a
thriving commercial trade.
Hundreds of 60- and 80-ton
freight boats moved up and
down the canal. Passenger
packets carrying 40 to 50 people made the trip to Cincinnati
in two days and three nights.
The fare in 1858 was $1.50.
The entire area between
Cincinnati and Toledo prospered.
The beginning of the 20th
century brought with it the
spirit of industrial growth to
partner along with its agricultural prosperity. New industries were founded and those
already established were expanded. The same is true
today, as this is reflected in the
present industries and prosperous conditions of the town.
With a population of
nearly 2,800 people, Minster
has the pride and peaceful living conditions of a small community, yet it is near many of
the large cities.
Minster possesses a highly

reputable public school system. Ninety percent of Minsters graduates further their
education. Many recreational
opportunities exist. There is a
spacious municipal swimming pool, an 18-hole golf

course, and an 18-lane bowling alley. Many social clubs

are also available.
