Rel Defence aims to export

naval, military equipment
MUMBAI: Reliance Defence
and Engineering is also
looking to export defence
equipment to other countries besides exploring opportunities in India.
"While we are pursuing
several opportunities in India on the naval side, we are
also pursuing foreign military sales which is effectively selling defence naval
equipment to other governments, other countries outside India," Ambani told
shareholders at the AGM of
RInfra here on Tuesday.
"Our teams are engaged
in multiple opportunities
which we hope will materialise in the next few years,"
he added.
Reliance Defence, wholly
owned susbsidiary of
RInfra, is looking at an integrated play in defence sector across all the verticals of
army, navy and air-force,
Ambani said, adding "the
sector is new and it is taking baby steps in moving
forward".
In January, RInfra took
over the complete control of
the management and control of Pipavav Defence &
Offshore Engineering Co
(PDOC) now called as Reliance Defence and Engineering.

MUMBAI: Finance Minister

Arun Jaitley on Tuesday
said banks, especially the
public sector ones, will be
armed better soon to resolve
the stressed assets as he
expects the winter session
of Parliament to clear
amends to the Prevention of
Corruption Act (PCA). "We
need to give public sector
banks level-playing field
with others.
The ability of private sector banker to settle on a
stressed loans would depend entirely on banking
considerations but a staterun bank is still constrained
by some of the obsolete
laws which exist", Jaitley
said.
While addressing the
SBI Economic Conclave, he
said, "unlike the private sector bankers the state-run
banks are constrained by
being public servants and
the present laws on corruption (PCA of 1988) makes
them wary of settling issues
purely on commercial considerations".
"I think the fear of consequences at time dilutes
the process of resolution",
he said adding amending
the present corruption law
would go a long way in

and actually signed MoUs

with RInfra to come and
work with it in India and
transfer technology, train
the employees and also provide capital, the chairman
added.
"So the capital is the constraint in the defence sector.
It is not as capital intensive
as most people think as
capital is provided by the
customer and in this case it
is ministry of defence. It is a
medium to light capital
intensive business," he
said.
The chairman also said

changing this.
Stating that the accountability of public servants
who act on such matters are
guided by larger public interest, he said, "I think the
law also which deals with
this is in the final stages of
its amending process. It's
before the standing commit-

tee and I hope in the next

session it comes up.
"Yes, the PCA of 1988
constrains a lot of public
servants, and also banking"
he said.
Admitting that the staterun banks, whose bad loans
have topped 15 per cent of
their assets in the June quarter, are in bad shape, he said,
"We are still struggling to
find answers for the health
of state-run banks. But we

can't push it below the carpet, we have to flag the issues.

Therefore, while we flag
this issue, the Reserve
Bank, the government and
Parliament have empowered
the banking system with
adequate powers."
Bad loans spiked even
for the most competitive
ones like HDFC Bank in the
recent quarters after the Reserve Bank last December
had identified around 130
most stressed accounts and
asked banks to make higher
provisions through the December and March quarters
and completely clean their
balance-sheets by March
2017.
As a result the bad loans
ratio more than topped 14
per cent of the system as of
the June quarter.
The Cabinet in April
cleared some key amendments to the PCA of 1988
seeking to classify corruption as a heinous crime and
longer prison terms for both
bribe-givers and bribe-takers.
The changes will also
ensure speedy trial, limited
to two years, for corruption
assured the Finance Minister. (PTI)

the company is in the process of signing a contract

with the Indian Coast Guard
for the first defence order for
14 fast patrol vessels, estimated at a cost of about Rs
1,000 crore.
"The navy has recently
sent 3 of their ships to refit
to Pipavav and there are bids
there, and shortly, tenders
to be opened for projects on
the naval side worth of over
Rs 10,000 crore.
So, we are deeply engaged and involved and
committed to the defence
sector," Ambani said. (PTI)

Gold futures
fall Rs 148
on weak
global cues
NEW DELHI: Amid a weakening global trend, gold futures on Tuesday traded
lower by Rs 148 at Rs 31,180
per 10 gram as speculators
trimmed their positions.
Gold for delivery in October dropped Rs 148 or
0.47 per cent to Rs 31,180 per
10 gram in a business turnover of 1,034 lots at the Multi
Commodity Exchange.
Similarly, the metal for
delivery in far-month December was trading down
Rs 141, or 0.45 per cent, to
Rs 31,310 per 10 gram in 176
lots.
The fall in gold futures
was mostly in step with a
weak trend overseas after its
biggest weekly advance in
two months, as the dollar
erased losses, dimming the
metals appeal as an alternative investment, analysts
said.
Meanwhile, gold prices
fell 0.21 per cent, to USD
1,334.70 an ounce in Singapore on Tuesday after a 2.1
per cent gain last week, the
most since the period to July
29. Silver coins, however,
continued to be traded at
previous levels of Rs 77,000
for buying and Rs 78,000 for
selling of 100 pieces. (PTI)

ALGIERS: Iran on Tuesday ruled out an

imminent agreement with other major oil
producers to freeze output as regional rivalry with Saudi Arabia hindered efforts
to reverse a price slump.
The new signs of discord sent oil prices
sliding again on world markets in the face
of a global supply glut that has left a gaping hole in the finances of oil-exporting
nations.
US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in November fell 3.5 per
cent to USD 44.31 a barrel in New York
trade today. Brent North Sea crude for
November shed 3.4 per cent to USD 45.75
a barrel.

Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said
on Tuesday on the eve of an informal
OPEC meeting in Algeria that the Islamic
republic was not yet ready to join a
mooted production freeze.
"It's not in our agenda to reach an
agreement in two days. We need time for
more consultation," he told reporters on
the sidelines of an energy conference in
Algiers. Zanganeh said Iran wanted to increase its daily output to pre-sanctions
levels of four million barrels, from the current estimated level of up to 3.8 million.

Indian team sans Rahul, Kumble arrives in Kolkata for 2nd Test

India to reclaim ICC Test top

spot if it wins in Kolkata
DUBAI: India will reclaim the
ICC Test Rankings top spot
from Pakistan if it wins the
second Test against New
Zealand starting on Friday
in Kolkata.
The victory in its 500th
Test in Kanpur meant that
India is now one victory
away from reclaiming the
ICC Test Championship
mace from Pakistan. India
had entered the three-match
series against the Kiwis,
trailing Pakistan by one
point and needed to win the
series to move ahead of its
traditional rival.
Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was the
star of the Kanpur win, also
climbed one place to occupy
second position in the ICC
Test Rankings among
bowlers.
Ashwin's match haul of
10-225, that helped India

an investigation by the
English Football Association following a newspaper
sting in which he was secretly taped negotiating a

In the footage, filmed by
