Safe Driving"- Refresher Course

1. Obey the Law

Never drive under the influence of sleep, haste, medicines, depression & restlessness.
Observe speed limits.
Use your seat belt.
Obey traffic signs and signals.
Pass other vehicles very carefully. Signal your intention before changing lanes.
Pass a stopped vehicle very carefully. Door of vehicle (in your path) can open suddenly.
Yield to drivers who have the right of way.
Use crash helmet while driving a motorcycle.

2. Drive sensibly and defensively

Correctly position mirrors and seat before you start your journey.
Never tailgate (follow closely). Stay at least 3 cars distances behind the driver ahead of you.
Don't insist on the right-of-way if the other driver is not yielding to it.
Beware and careful of what is happening ahead and behind you.
Never drive while using a mobile phone or sending an SMS message. Stop the vehicle on one side
to respond to a call on mobile phone.
While reversing the vehicle be careful. Use all 3 mirrors to see the position of vehicle and things.
The dividers between the roads are big hazards. Take great care while driving at high speed.

3. Expect the unexpected

Reckless behaviour from other drivers.


People or animals suddenly coming on the road.
Cyclists and carts.
Holes or debris on the road.

4. Maintain your vehicle

Maintain your tyres in excellent condition. Worn out tyres is a big hazard.
Conduct pre-driving inspection every time.
Be sure that scheduled maintenance and checks are carried out in time.
Be alert for defective I poor performance of anything in your vehicle. Rectify it promptly.
Do not drive too fast over bumpy road.
Do not make sharp turns or sudden stops and starts.

5. Take precautions against bad weather


~ To Improve visibility:
Use wipers, defroster and headlights as per requirements.
To counter glare (shine) from sun or snow, use sunglasses as appropriate.

When visibility is poor or roads are slippery:


Reduce speed.
Increase distance between you and the vehicle ahead.
Brake gently.
Never drive in dense smoke/ fog.
Be careful for sudden pockets of fog.
If you skid, steer gently. Do not use brakes or step on accelerator.
