Burettes (2)
Buret Stand
Eggshell

Prepare an acid buret and a base buret (See titration lab).

Fill each buret to a point above the calibration mark.
Release some of the liquid in each buret in order to remove
any air bubbles and to lower the volume to the calibration
mark.
Remove the white and the yoke from an egg and dispose of
them.
Wash the shell with distilled water and carefully peel away
all the membrane from the inside of the egg.
Dry the shell in a drying oven.
Remove the eggshell from the oven and cool.
Grind the eggshell using the mortar and pestle.
Measure a 0.5-gram sample of eggshell on the balance
scale. Record your data.
Place the eggshell sample into the Erlenmeyer flask.
Add 25-mL of the 1M HCl to the flask.
Swirl gently for 3 to 4 minutes.
Add two drops of phenolphthalein to the flask.
Titrate the mixture in the flask with 1 M NaOH from the
base buret until the phenolphthalein changes color.
Record the volume of 1 M NaOH used.
