Base Crew 101

This document provides an overview of establishing base stations and acquiring base data. It discusses establishing ground control points (GCPs) and benchmarks according to accuracy standards. It describes downloading raw GPS data from various receiver models and naming the file formats. It also reviews using active geodetic stations as replacements. The document outlines organizing the base data and metadata in project folders. Finally, it introduces processing the baseline data using Trimble Business Center software.

GCP and BM Establishment

As per Sir Chris email dated August 7, 2014

http://www.geodeticengineer.org.ph/geodetic-control-points/

One of the objectives of DAC is to

acquire 50 cm horizontal and 20 cm
vertical accuracy. To obtain this, we need
2nd and higher ordered GCPs (i.e. Zeroth
and 1st) as base stations.
Based on GCP MASTERLIST.xls, there are
currently 74 Zeroth order, 314 1st order,
2,361 2nd order, 3,867 3rd order and
10,618 4th order GCPs

GCP and BM Establishment

Duration of Observation
In case there is no recovered 1st or 2nd order GCPs in the area of interest, establishment of GCP
takes place. You can opt to recover 3rd and 4th order GCP, then re-process later. Other option is to
establish a semi-permanent marker.
As per Memorandum Circular No. 2010-13 Section 24. A minimum of four (4) satellites shall be
observed with the following duration for Static Mode:

GCP and BM Establishment Accuracy

To obtain the accuracy of our established GCP, we refer to Memorandum Circular No. 2010-13
Section 25. Connection to existing controls Connection shall be made to control of the same
or higher Order of Accuracy with the following number of observations:

Base Data .T02 and .TPS file

The raw data we download from Trimble GPSs are in .T02 format, while those of Topcon GPS are in .TPS format.
Each model has different ways of downloading it, well just discuss one for each, the ones often used for each
model.

Base Data Active Geodetic Stations

In case the GPS battery died early, which happens some
times, we have our option for replacement of base data
provided by the Active Geodetic Stations (AGS).
AGS are networks of permanently-installed continuously
operating geodetic stations that provide real time, high
precision geographic position data.
Data can be requested at NAMRIA Philippine Active
Geodetic Network (PageNET). For further details, please
visit NAMRIA website.
AGS located in Legazpi City, Albay (PLEG)

Geographic Coordinates
(Latitude, Longitude, Ellipsoidal
Ht) is pretty straightforward. The
tricky part arises with Grid
Coordinates (Northings, Eastings,
Orthometric Ht) because of
zoning. Tabulated are zoning
applied in the Philippines.

These values are significant in

converting coordinates from
geographic to grid, vice versa.

All inputs of base info.txt are relatively straight forward, except for Measured from and its
corresponding Antenna Height measurement where there are variations depending on the GPS
model used. Antenna heights can be measured vertically (Bottom of Antenna Height) or inclined
(Bottom of Notch) from the ground.

Protocol
1.

Always setup two (2) base stations (main and backup)

2.

Only use 2nd order GCPs and above

3.

Flight plans must be within at most 30 km radius of the base station

Reminders
Download base data everyday
Always re-charge GPS batteries before going to sleep
Always take pictures of your set-up and GCP for Base Part of the Technical Report. Also, take pictures of
ID of your local hires, for liquidation purposes.
For SPS882, do not press the power button long as it may compromise the data stored in it. (i.e.
unintentional data deletion)
We do not have a list of BMs scattered around the country, as is the case for GCPs. But BMs are usually
located at bridges.
