Autism
Autism
does not do it justice, a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by
difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language
and abstract concepts (Autism Speaks Inc, 2012). When people hear of autism they are thinking
of one specific disorder and they think that everyone who has austin is the same, but that is not
the case. Autism is a general term for a group of complex disorders that all occur with brain
development. These disorders can affect such things as social interaction, verbal and nonverbal
communication and repetitive behaviours. Autism is something that one can be born with or can
develop very early during brain development. It is hard to tell at such a young age whether signs
that you see are sign of autism or just habits your child has, but most signs of autism tend to
become more present between the ages of two and three years of age (Autism Speaks Inc, 2012).
Some early common signs that may be related to autism are; peculiar toy habits, trouble relating
to others, sensitive to sounds, struggle with change, speech or nonverbal delays, hyperactive or
passive, attached to objects, lack of safety, inappropriate emotions and aloof (Hughes, 2016).
Autism can be associated with one's attention, physical health issues (sleep and gastrointestinal
disturbances) intellectual disability, their ability to use basic motor coordinations and some can
even excel in subjects such as visual skills, music, math and art (Autism Speaks Inc, 2012).
Being a child with autism at such a young age can be extremely hard as it can effect such crucial
things like relationships, learning opportunities and everyday basic needs, such as caring for
oneself. It is important to diagnose any mental disorder as soon as possible so that the right
precautions are taking, as well as the right teaching methods. When working with a child who
has autism, some of your teaching strategies may need to be altered to best fit the needs of them
