8316 Series-Sil II

The document provides a certificate confirming that the ASCO 8316 Series Solenoid Valve meets the requirements for safety integrity level (SIL) 3 capability according to IEC 61508 standards. It specifies that the valve has a systematic integrity of SIL 3 and a random integrity of SIL 3 at a hardware fault tolerance of 1 or SIL 2 at a hardware fault tolerance of 0 when used as a standalone component. Failure rate data is provided for the valve in different failure categories. The certificate is valid from 2006 to 2009.

8316 Series Solenoid Valve

Manufactured by:

ASCO Valves
Florham Park, NJ
Has been assessed per the relevant requirements of:
IEC 61508 Parts 1, 2
And meets requirements providing a level of integrity to:
Systematic Integrity: SIL 3 Capable

Validity: For solenoid valve used in final element
This assessment is valid assembly, SIL must be also verified for
for all Series 8316 valves. the application.
Safety Function:
This assessment is valid The valve will close within the specified safety time when
from January 15, 2006 de-energized
until January 15, 2009.
Application Restrictions:
The unit must be properly designed into a Safety

Version 1.0 December 2005
Series 8316 Solenoid Valve
ASCO, Florham Park, NJ, USA
Systematic Integrity: SIL 3 Capable
SIL 3 Capability:
The product has met manufacturer design process requirements of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3. These are
intended to achieve sufficient integrity against systematic errors of design by the manufacturer. A Safety
Instrumented Function (SIF) designed with this product must not be used at a SIL level higher than the
statement without prior use justification by end user or diverse technology redundancy in the design.

Random Integrity for standalone solenoid valve:

Type A Device: SIL 3 @ HFT=1 / SIL 2 @ HFT=0
For solenoid valve used in final element assembly, SIL must be also verified for the
specific application using the following failure rate data.
Table 1 Failure rates Series 8316 3/2 Solenoid valve

Failure rate (in FIT)

Failure category 8316A 8316B
Fail Safe 85 135
Fail Dangerous Undetected 159 160
No Effect 443 479

Table 2 Failure rates Series 8316 3/2 Solenoid valve, with partial valve stroke testing[1]

Failure rate (in FIT)

Failure category 8316A 8316B
Fail Safe 85 135
Fail Dangerous Detected 157.4 157.9
Fail Dangerous Undetected 1.6 1.6
No Effect 443 479

SIL Verification:
The Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of an entire Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) must be verified via a
calculation of PFDavg considering redundant architectures, proof test interval, proof test effectiveness, any
automatic diagnostics, average repair time and the specific failure rates of all products included in the SIF.
Each subsystem must be checked to assure compliance with minimum hardware fault tolerance (HFT)
requirements.
