EarlyBuddhismacknowledgedbothaliteralandpsychologicalinterpretationofMara.
SpeciallyMaraisdescribedbothasanentityhavinganexistenceinKmaworld,[4]just
asareshownexistingaroundtheBuddha,andalsoisdescribed
inpaiccasamuppdaas,primarily,theguardianofpassionandthecatalystforlust,
hesitationandfearthatobstructsmeditationamongBuddhists.
"BuddhadefyingMara"isacommonposeofBuddhasculptures.TheBuddhaisshown
withhislefthandinhislap,palmfacingupwardsandhisrighthandonhisrightknee.
Thefingersofhisrighthandtouchtheearth,tocalltheearthashiswitnessfordefying
Maraandachievingenlightenment.Thispostureisalsoreferredtoasthe'earth
