Methodology:
The first step to make my work successful will be the recruitment of the band members.
This will require me to ask for volunteers through the whole band via Facebook posts,
announcements during band class with my band directors permission and assistance, and asking
students face-to-face. Once I have put together the band, I must work out the technical side of
things. This includes working out a rehearsal schedule with my band directors based on the
availability of the band hall, which is where all the rehearsals will take place, acquiring the music
and all its parts to use, sorting out how many service hours I will be allowed to give to the
volunteers, and working with the school a time and date that the concert can take place.
After I handle the technical aspects and have members for the band, I begin rehearsals,
following the schedule I put together. With the schedule, I will inform the band members and
remind them of the rehearsals. I will have consistent and weekly rehearsals up until the concert
date. In these rehearsals, I will practice teaching my band the music, learn effective and efficient
teaching techniques, and put into practice the skills I learn from my mentor.
As I hold these rehearsals, I will also have weekly meetings with my mentor where I can
learn what I need to know to be successful. This includes learning how to read music score, how
to conduct, how to run the rehearsals, what directing techniques are most effective for making
the pieces sound as they should and at a high caliber, and what teaching techniques are most
effective when it comes to students putting forth their best effort.
Finally, I will be able to put on the actual concert. Before the concert, I will need to create
programs for the audience and flyers to advertise it to the general public. I will also create a short
speech to give before and in between the performances. At the concert, myself and volunteers
will need to set up the Centennial auditorium stage like an actual band concert. I will have the
performance recorded on video, and have a photographer to document the concert.
Materials:
For this project, I will need the music I select and all its parts. Thankfully, all the music is
available for me to borrow from the Centennial Band and Clark Middle School Band music
library, so I do not need to purchase any of it. Im able to make copies of scores and the parts to
pass out to students in the band hall office, which my directors permission.
I needed a venue to hold the concert which Ive decided will be the Centennial
auditorium and have scheduled a time and date with Mrs.McAbee in the office. At the actual
concert I will be handing out the programs I need to create and print out. If I am unable to make
the copies of the programs from my home, I will send in an order from a print shop to make the
copies. Depending on where I go and how many copies I need, this could cost me about $20-$50.
Conclusions:
For this project, I anticipate a successful concert that I will be able to film to have playing
at final presentation night. I will have a videographer and photographer at the concert to capture
the moment and give me a somewhat tangible form of this project. From this project, I have and
will continue to learn the pacing of my rehearsals, meaning to not waste time in the rehearsals
just trying to figure out what to do and not being efficient. From speaking with my mentor, I
think that this experience will allow me to make mistakes I can avoid in my first year of
teaching, making me a more effective and strong teacher immediately.
My original work not only benefits me in allowing me to gain realistic experience of a
part of what my future career entails, but it allows supplies service hours to students who may
need them for school. These service hours are gained through an activity that students enjoy and
can even give them experience in playing in a group beyond band class. In the end, it will also
showcase the talents of my volunteers in an entertaining show for our community; any teachers,
parents, or other students are more than welcome to observe. Though my work may not have a
direct and impactful benefit to our community at large, it does showcase a form of art that I
believe can be appreciated and is part of why I pursue this with so much passion.
