Ultimate End Bearing = 487.71 T

The above bearing capacity should be checked against settlement criteria and is presented
below.
Project: Geotech Inv. Work for C/O ROB in replacement of existing level crossings
in Bihar.
Job No. : 3363-09 Sheet No.
In our report we have calculated the settlement of soil assuming trapezoidal distribution of stress. In case of sandy soil, we are having only immediate
settlement. Now the problem starts when the soil becomes silty clay / clayey silt.
There is no definite and particular formula to calculate settlement of this type of soil. The mv value we get from the consolidation test results includes immediate
part also. It is seen that for the present case about 26-67% of compression takes place just after application of test load. Hence, judicious use of mvc (the
consolidation part only and not the mv) should be used. Thus mv value obtained from the e-logP curves should not be used blindly.
It is seen that the settlement determined as per Clause 9.2.2.3 for computation as per IS 8009 Part-1 leads to more or less same value as calculated by us.
Moreover, for sites like the present project where we have large numbers of consolidation test results, this type of approach is very very tedious. Since, this e-
logP curve is totally undefined and can not be framed in any particular equation, it is not at all suitable for any computer programming. Thus determination of
settlement through this procedure is not feasible for a day to day work basis job.
mvc & p approach is very straight forward and the equation is similar to normal settlement calculation by theory of elasticity (mvc 1/E). We are in this field
for the last 25 years and using this approach (mvc & p) satisfactorily to calculate settlement for almost all of our Clients.
Calculation of P

Geological Factor: This is nothing but the consolidation settlement reduction factor, as given in IS 8009, Part I. This is termed as geological factor by M. J.
Tomlinson as the value is dependent on geology and pore pressure history of the soil.

Job No. : 3363-09 Sheet No.
SAND CUSHION
For higher bearing capacity sand cushion/ incompressible materials (such as gravel,
crushed stone aggregates etc.) may be provided below founding level. This will reduce the
settlement and thus increasing the net allowable bearing capacity. Since the foundation is
resting on sand cushion/incompressible materials bearing capacity will not be a problem.
Settlement with sand cushion: The settlement is calculated assuming no deformation of the
sand cushion (thus 1.50m to 3.50m soil settlement is neglected).
Depth of Foundation = 1.50 m below EGL
Foundation Width, B = 5.00 m
Foundation Length, L = 10.00 m
Net base Pressure, P = 1.50 kg/sqcm
Check for bearing capacity at the interface: Assuming 15 t/sqm net pressure at the founding
level, pressure at the interface of sand cushion & virgin soil = 15 x 5 x 10 / [(5+2) x (10+2)] =
8.93 t/sqm
Approximate ultimate bearing capacity of the virgin soil = 6C = 6 x 0.50 = 3.00kg/sqcm = 30
t/sqm
So, available factor of safety = 30/8.93 = 3.35 OK
Hence, use a net allowable bearing capacity of 15t/sqm for foundations placed at 1.50m
below EGL with 2m thick sand cushion below founding level.
Project: Geotech Inv. Work for C/O ROB in replacement of existing level crossings

Hence the virgin soil is not safe from bearing capacity point of view due to construction of
proposed embankment. Hence some improvement of existing soil is required. In order to
improve the subsoil quality installation of sand drain/prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) is
suggested.

7. CHEMICAL TESTS:
Chemical tests were performed on a few soil samples for determining the pH value, Sulphate
and Chloride content. The results are given in a tabular form below:
Based on the field and laboratory test results and the foregoing discussion, the following are
summarised.
1. The subsoils in general are of good quality. The subsoil is characterized by a medium to
stiff clayey silt layer appears at top followed by a very stiff to hard clayey silt layer.
Underlying the above a dense to very dense silty sand layer is encountered and that
continued up to the terminating depth of all the boreholes.
2. Considering the subsoil condition it is suggested to go for deep foundation in form of pile.
Bored cast-in-situ piles are preferred due to availability of construction agencies, ease of
construction and less sound pollution.
3. The determination of vertical pile capacity for bored cast-in-situ pile is presented in the
previous section. However, the recommended pile capacity values for different pile
diameters at different founding levels are presented below. [Cut-off = 3.00M]
22 245
1000 25 270 26 3.06 8.74
28 300
22 340
1200 25 380 37 3.67 10.49
28 420
Note: Pile load test should be conducted to ascertain the pile capacity as per IS: 2911,Part IV.
4. For the structures in approaches such as PUP, VUP, retaining wall structures, it is
suggested to go for open foundation. The determination of bearing capacity of open
foundation around abutment locations are presented in the previous section. The
recommended bearing capacity values are presented below.
6. Chemical tests were performed on a few soil samples to determine the pH value,
Sulphate and Chloride content. It is seen that the values are within permissible limits (as
per IS 456). So no special cement will be required for foundation concrete. Either
Ordinary Portland cement or Portland slag cement or Portland Pozzolana cement
can be used for the purpose.
