1. SOIL PROFILE & PROPERTIES:

The subsoils in general are of good quality. The subsoil is characterized by a medium to stiff
clayey silt layer appears at top followed by a very stiff to hard clayey silt layer. Underlying the
above a dense to very dense silty sand layer is encountered and that continued up to the
terminating depth of all the boreholes.

The generalized profile of the site is shown in Fig.2. On the above basis the layer wise
descriptions are presented below.

1.1. STRATUM I:
The soil in this layer is characterised by medium to stiff yellowish/ brownish grey clayey silt /
silty clay with fine sand mixture. Kankar and black spots have been observed in this layer.
The average N value of this layer is 08. The average soil properties of this layer revealed
from routine laboratory test on UDS collected from this layer are presented below.

1.3. STRATUM III:

Underlying the above we have a sand layer characterized by dense to very dense reddish
brown/ yellowish brown/ brownish grey silty sand and that continued upto the terminating
depth of all the boreholes. Kankar and gravel have been observed in the layer. The average
corrected N value of this layer is 54. No UDS could be collected from this layer. Grain size
analysis of some SPT samples show the following average properties.
Specific gravity 2.68
GRAIN SIZE
Gravel % 02
Sand % 88
(Silt + Clay) % 10

2. CHOICE OF FOUNDATION & FOUNDING LEVEL:

The proposed structure will be a ROB. Considering the nature of the subsoil and the type of
structures to be constructed at the present site, it is suggested to go for deep foundation in
the form of piles.

3. USE OF R.C. BORED PILE:

Bored cast in-situ piles are preferred due to availability of construction agencies, ease of
construction and less sound pollution. Such piles may be placed at a suitable depth below
EGL depending upon structural requirement. The determination of pile capacity is presented
in separate sheets.
At first, the design strength parameters are determined. Thereafter, the pile capacity values
are calculated. While determining the pile capacity, the following considerations are made.
a) Pile capacity is calculated using average strength parameters and layer
stratification as around BH-04.
b) Assumed Grade of Concrete = M35
c) Diameter of pile used = 1000 and 1200mm
Project: Geotech Inv. Work for C/O ROB in replacement of existing level crossings
in Bihar.
Job No. : 3363-09 Sheet No.

3.1. DESIGN STRENGTH PARAMETERS:

STRATUM I:
Average "N" in this layer = 08 So, estimated cohesion from "N" value = 0.59 kg/sqcm
From Laboratory TRSH-UU test results, average C = 0.57 kg/sqcm & = 00
Considering the above Use, C = 0.50kg/sqcm & = 0
Use Adhesion factor, = 0.871

STRATUM II:
Average "N" in this layer = 27. So, estimated cohesion from "N" value = 1.12 kg/sqcm
From Laboratory TRSH-UU test results, average C = 1.17 kg/sqcm & = 0
Considering the above Use, C = 1.00kg/sqcm & = 0
Use Adhesion factor, = 0.446

STRATUM III:
Average corrected "N" in this layer = 27, corresponding Relative Density (Dr) = 60.50 %
Friction angle 1 = 25+0.15*Dr = 25+0.15*60.50 = 34.08

Relation between SPT N and Shear Strength

Widely used relationship is due to Terzagi and Peck recommending C = N/16
However, it has been seen over the years with stiffness in clay the shear strength does not increase as rapidly as proposed by Terzagi.
Our experience also shows that for clays at medium to higher depth, the above relation does not hold good.
For Static Cone Penetration Tests, the recommendations for cone factor Nk generally are
C = qc/Nk where C = Cohesion in kg/sqcm and qc = Cone resistance in Static Cone and
Nk = 17 , 21 & 27 for normally consolidated clay, partly over consolidated clay and heavily over consolidated clay respectively
[Ref. Meigh, A.C (1987) : Cone Penetration Testing Methods and Interpretation, Butterworths, London, pp-43-47]
Taveres, A.X [Penetration Testing 1988, ISOPT-1, Volume-I, J.De Ruiter Editor, pp-375-379] has shown very clearly that a better correlation can be obtained
with stiffness of the clay. From his experimental results he obtained,
Range of SPT N K = N/C
N < 10 12.50
10 < N < 20 14.20
20 < N < 30 16.25
30 < N < 40 20.00
Over the years on the basis of the laboratory test results we have been using the following relations. However, for N value greater than 40, we use C = N/27

(Based on layer stratification around BH-04

Project: Geotech Inv. Work for C/O ROB in replacement of existing level crossings

Job No. : 3363-09 Sheet No.

For bored cast-in-situ piles the soil get loosened during boring.
Poules(1980) suggested that = 1 3 = 34.08 - 3 = 31.08 31
Use, C = 0.00kg/sqcm & = 31.
Use Ko = 1.05 (As per IS 2911, Part 1 / Sec-2: 2010, pp-10)

Based on the above the pile capacity values are calculated by two different approaches
(From Static formula & from SPT values using Extended Method of Mayerhoff).
Now we have following sample pile capacity,

For 1000mm dia pile placed at 25m depth below EGL

a. Using static formula, Safe Pile Capacity = 392.86T
b. Using Extended Method of Mayerhoff, Safe Pile Capacity = 375.36T
So, recommended pile capacity = 380T.

4.2. DETERMINATION OF VERTICAL PILE CAPACITY:

Following the same principle, the pile capacity values for different pile diameter as well as
different founding level are calculated and following pile capacity values are recommended.
A typical sample calculation is presented in separate sheet.

Pile Pile founding Recommended

Diameter depth below Vertical Pile
(mm) EGL(M) Capacity(T)
22 245
1000 25 270
28 300
22 340
1200 25 380
28 420

4.3. LATERAL PILE CAPACITY (FOR 1200MM DIA PILE):

Use c = 0.50 kg/sqcm for lateral pile capacity calculation
Refer to IS : 2911 (Part I/Sec 2) - 2010, Appendix - C
Constant Factor, k1 = 1.80 kg/cucm corresponding to Cohesion = 0.50 kg/sqcm
Now, K = (k1/1.5) x (30/D) which is coming as 0.30 kg/cucm [D = Pile dia in cm]
Stiffness factor, R = [EI/KD]1/4
Now, I = 10.18 x 106 cm4 [for 1200mm dia pile]
E = 5000 x (fck)0.5 = 5000 x (35)0.5 = 29580 N/sqmm = 2.96 x 105 kg/sqcm
Hence, R = 537.77 cm
From Graph (Fig.4), Lf = 1.95 x R = 1048.66 cm [Assuming Fixed Head Piles]
Pile Head deflection, Y = H x Lf3 / 12EI = 0.3192mm for 1T load
So, for 12mm horizontal deflection , (i.e.1% of pile dia., as per IRC 78-2014) at cut-off level, the lateral
force(H) at the Bottom of pile cap is given by, H = 37.60T, say 37T
Now, Moment = [H x Lf/2] = [1 x 10.49/2] = 5.24t-m per T of thrust
The Reduction Factor for computation of Maximum Moment in Pile, m = 0.70
So, the corrected actual moment, M = 5.24 x 0.70 = 3.67t-m per T of thrust
SAMPLE PILE CAPACITY CALCULATION

Bottom depth of Pile = 25.00 m below EGL

Cut-off Length = 3.00 m

5. USE OF OPEN FOUNDATION:

For ancillary structures at approach, such as VUP/PUP/CUP, Retaining wall etc. it is
suggested to go for open foundation. The determination of bearing capacity around
Abutment locations are presented below.
5.1. FOUNDING LEVEL:
It is suggested to place the foundation at 1.50m below existing ground level.

GENERAL BEARING CAPACITY CALCULATION:

5.1.2. EVALUATION OF STRENGTH & DEFORMATION PARAMETERS:
FOR STRATUM - I
Average "N" in this layer = 08
Use, C = 0.50 kg/sqcm & = 0 [As calculated above]
Total soil modulus, Es = 4.4 x N = 35.20 kg/sqcm
[Ref. to History of Soil penetration testing by B. B. Broms & N. Flodin in Penetration
Testing 1988, ISPOT-1: vol.1, p 185]
Undrained Youngs modulus, Eu = K x C = 350 x 0.50 = 175 kg/sqcm
Again, 1/Es = 1/Eu + 1/Ed giving drained young's modulus, Ed = 44.06 kg/sqcm
Now, we have, Ed = Eu/3 = 58.33 kg/sqcm
[Refer to Cone Penetration Testing" by A.C.Meigh, pp. No. 53]
Considering the above, let us use Ed = 51 kg/sqcm
From Ed, mvc = 1/G.Ed =0.0231 sqcm/kg [Geological Factor, G = 0.85 & = 0.35]
Again from SPT N, mvc = 1/5N = 0.0250 sqcm/kg
[Refer to Standard Penetration Test, State-of-the-art-Report by Ivan K. Nixon in
Penetration testing 1 Edited by A.Verrujt, F.L.beringen & E.H.De Leeuw, pp. No. 11]

Now, let us consider the mvc value for the pressure range between 0.50 to 2.00 kg/sqcm

5.1.3. DETERMINATION OF BEARING CAPACITY:

The Net Ultimate Bearing Capacity is given as:
qnu = C.Nc.Sc.Dc + q.Nq.Sq.Dq + 0.5.B.N.S.D - q
Where,
Nc, Nq and N are bearing capacity factors,
Sc, Sq and S are shape factors,
Dc, Dq and D are depth factors,
And
C = Cohesion
q = Overburden pressure,
B = Width of foundation,
= Effective density below foundation.

For (5mx10m) Isolated Footing

Cohesion, C = 5.00 t/sqm
Using = 0 degree, the bearing capacity factors are:
Nc = 5.14
Nq = 1.00
N = 0.00
Use,
Depth of Foundation = Df = 1.5 M(Below EGL)
Width of Foundation = B = 5 M
Length of Foundation = L = 10 M
Overburden Pressure = q =1.500 (Depth) x 0.90 (Submerged density) = 1.35 t/sqm (Assuming water
table is flushing with the ground level)
The Shape factors are [ IS:6403 - 1981 ]
Sc = 1.10 Sq = 1.10 S = 0.80
The Depth factors are [ IS:6403 - 1981 ]
Dc = 1.06 Dq = 1.00 D = 1.00
Computed Net Ultimate Bearing Capacity = 30.13 t/sqm
Using a factor of safety of 2.5, Net Safe Bearing Capacity = 12.05 t/sqm

The above bearing capacity should be checked against settlement criteria and is presented
below.

5.1.4. SETTLEMENT CALCULATION:

strength parameters of all boreholes. With reference to the above, the settlement is
calculated and is presented below.

Total = 2.11 5.70 7.81
Fox's Depth correction Factor = 0.95
Hence, corrected Total Settlement = 7.39

Use a net allowable bearing capacity of 09 t/sqm

Use of mvc value to Calculate Settlement:

In our report we have calculated the settlement of soil assuming trapezoidal distribution of stress. In case of sandy soil, we are having only immediate
settlement. Now the problem starts when the soil becomes silty clay / clayey silt.
There is no definite and particular formula to calculate settlement of this type of soil. The mv value we get from the consolidation test results includes immediate
part also. It is seen that for the present case about 26-67% of compression takes place just after application of test load. Hence, judicious use of mvc (the
consolidation part only and not the mv) should be used. Thus mv value obtained from the e-logP curves should not be used blindly.
It is seen that the settlement determined as per Clause 9.2.2.3 for computation as per IS 8009 Part-1 leads to more or less same value as calculated by us.
Moreover, for sites like the present project where we have large numbers of consolidation test results, this type of approach is very very tedious. Since, this e-
logP curve is totally undefined and can not be framed in any particular equation, it is not at all suitable for any computer programming. Thus determination of
settlement through this procedure is not feasible for a day to day work basis job.
mvc & p approach is very straight forward and the equation is similar to normal settlement calculation by theory of elasticity (mvc 1/E). We are in this field
for the last 25 years and using this approach (mvc & p) satisfactorily to calculate settlement for almost all of our Clients.

SAND CUSHION
For higher bearing capacity sand cushion/ incompressible materials (such as gravel,
crushed stone aggregates etc.) may be provided below founding level. This will reduce the
settlement and thus increasing the net allowable bearing capacity. Since the foundation is
resting on sand cushion/incompressible materials bearing capacity will not be a problem.

Let us check for

a) Settlement criteria
b) Bearing capacity at the interface of sand and virgin soil

Settlement with sand cushion: The settlement is calculated assuming no deformation of the
sand cushion (thus 1.50m to 3.50m soil settlement is neglected).

Fox's Depth correction Factor = 0.95
Hence, corrected Total Settlement = 7.74

Check for bearing capacity at the interface: Assuming 15 t/sqm net pressure at the founding
level, pressure at the interface of sand cushion & virgin soil = 15 x 5 x 10 / [(5+2) x (10+2)] =
8.93 t/sqm
Approximate ultimate bearing capacity of the virgin soil = 6C = 6 x 0.50 = 3.00kg/sqcm = 30
t/sqm
So, available factor of safety = 30/8.93 = 3.35 OK
Hence, use a net allowable bearing capacity of 15t/sqm for foundations placed at 1.50m
below EGL with 2m thick sand cushion below founding level.

6. DISCUSSION ON HIGH EMBANKMENT:

6.1. AROUND BH 01 & 06 LOCATIONS:

In this location, at the top, we have a medium to stiff silty clay layer. Considering the nature
of the subsoil, it is clear that the subsoil may fail in the following two aspects: -

1. Bearing Capacity of Stratum - I

2. Settlement Criteria.

6.1.1 BEARING CAPACITY OF STRATUM I:

(Considering the embankment portion BH- 01 only)
Use design C = 0.50 kg/sqcm & = 0 [Considering BH-04]
Approximate ultimate bearing capacity = 6*c = 6 x 0.50 = 3.00 kg/sqcm = 30.00 t/sqm
Using a factor of safety of 2.5, Net Safe Bearing Capacity = 12 t/sqm
Unit weight of soil = 1.95 t/cum
The height of the embankment that could be retained = 12/1.95 = 6.15 m ,say 6m
However about 11m high embankment is to be constructed.
This proposed 11m high embankment is likely to be constructed in 11 months. Due to
consolidation at this period, the soil will gain strength and the available factor of safety may
be of the order of 2.50 with respect to full height. So, it is required to check the virgin soil
with respect to factor of safety.

Hence the virgin soil is not safe from bearing capacity point of view due to construction of
proposed embankment. Hence some improvement of existing soil is required. In order to
improve the subsoil quality installation of sand drain/prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) is
suggested.

USE OF SAND DRAIN/PREFABRICATED VERTICAL DRAIN (PVD):

Installation of sand drain/PVD will accelerate the consolidation settlement to take place,
which in turn results in strength gain of subsoil. This is discussed below.
Use Sand drain diameter, d = 150 mm
Depth of drains, l = 20M
Place the drains in a square grid with a spacing of 2000 mm c/c
So, the contributing area for each drains = 2.00 x 2.00= 4.0 sqm
So, diameter of equivalent circular influence zone, D = 2.26m [(/4)*D2= 4.00, hence,
D = 2.26]
D / d = 2.26 x 1000 / 150 = 15.06
[Refer to Engineering Properties of Soils by G. A. Leonards in Foundation Engineering, Edited
by G. A. Leonards, pp no. - 175. Mc Graw-Hill Civil Engineering Series]
Time factor, Tr = (Cv x t)/D2 (Design Cv= 4.614X10-3cm2/s)
-3 2
= (4.614 x 10 x 0.50 x 30 x 24 x 3600)/(2.26 x 100) = 0.117
[Assuming 1 month time is provided for 1m height of filling after installation of sand
drains. So average consolidation time 0.50month for 1m height]
Corresponding % of complete consolidation = 38%

Estimated consolidation settlement = G*P*H*mvc = 0.85x2.15x15x100x0.0182 = 489 mm
Due to installation of PVD, the consolidation settlement will take place faster and post
construction settlement is calculated as follows.
Height of Filling = 11 m
Estimated consolidation settement = 498.9 mm

Similarly for layer-II the post construction settlement is about 34mm

Thus the estimated post construction settlement is of the order of 80mm and can be
accepted.
Hence provide prefabricated vertical drain of 150mm diameter with 15m length with 2000mm
c/c spacing.

8. SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS

Based on the field and laboratory test results and the foregoing discussion, the following are
summarised.
1. The subsoils in general are of good quality. The subsoil is characterized by a medium to
stiff clayey silt layer appears at top followed by a very stiff to hard clayey silt layer.
Underlying the above a dense to very dense silty sand layer is encountered and that
continued up to the terminating depth of all the boreholes.

2. Considering the subsoil condition it is suggested to go for deep foundation in form of pile.
Bored cast-in-situ piles are preferred due to availability of construction agencies, ease of
construction and less sound pollution.

3. The determination of vertical pile capacity for bored cast-in-situ pile is presented in the
previous section. However, the recommended pile capacity values for different pile
diameters at different founding levels are presented below. [Cut-off = 3.00M]

Note: Pile load test should be conducted to ascertain the pile capacity as per IS: 2911,Part IV.

4. For the structures in approaches such as PUP, VUP, retaining wall structures, it is
suggested to go for open foundation. The determination of bearing capacity of open
foundation around abutment locations are presented in the previous section. The
recommended bearing capacity values are presented below.
