Dear Hiring Manager,

In mid-summer of 2017, I will be completing my Masters Degree in English Education from the
University of Floridas English ProTeach program, a state-approved and nationally accredited
teacher preparation program. By this time, I will also have achieved the Florida Professional
Teacher Certification in English 6-12 along with an ESOL Endorsement. Prior to this, I also
completed my Bachelors Degree in English in 2015. Throughout my endeavors in education, I
have had the opportunity to participate in numerous teaching and learning experiences that
make me a qualified candidate for an English/English Language Arts teaching position.
Over the last year of my Masters program, I have developed my professional teaching abilities
through several hands-on experiences, such as two separate practicum placements at a middle
and high school, an extended writing partnership with high school students, and a three month
long student teaching position; these experiences have allowed me to design and implement
units and individual lessons for real classrooms and students of incredibly diverse backgrounds,
interest, and ability levels. The units which I designed, one of which focused on the Harlem
Renaissance and the other on the classic novel, Lord of the Flies, encouraged student
engagement and highlighted many FSA standards through a variety of creative, higher order
lessons. During my time as a student teacher, I was also able to implement technology in the
classroom through the use of smartboard presentations, live annotations, and collaboration with
students through Google Docs.

Additionally, I have been able to truly step into the role of a teacher and participate in all
teaching responsibilities, from communication to classroom management to discipline to
assessment and grading. As a teacher, I have also seen myself improve in ways that I did not
know were possible, and I look forward to continuing to make strides as a full-time teacher.
Additionally, my background as an English major allowed me to further develop my passion for
literature and creativity through the diverse range of courses I took, which included Studies in
Poetry, Victorian Literature, Indian Captivity Narratives, Afro-Latino Cultural Studies, Adolescent
Literature, The American War Machine, and Theory and Practice of Modern Criticism.
Beyond the professional experience, the last year has reaffirmed my beliefs that teaching is the
right place for me. As a teacher, I have had the unique opportunity to interact with many
different children and get to know them academically and personally; I can honestly say that
there is nothing more exciting than being able to inspire creativity, instill confidence, and open
doors to places, people, and ideas that may otherwise have never existed within a students
mind. I have been truly amazed at some of the work that I have seem from my students across
the board, from analytical essays and poems all the way to science fiction short stories and
works of art.
Ultimately, my passion for reading, learning, and sharing that passion with others will allow me
to succeed as a teacher in this school. I firmly believe that this school is a place in which I will be
able to continue to develop my practice and make a difference in students lives, and I would
love the opportunity to show that. Thank you for your time and consideration, and I look forward
to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Kalie Weiland
