Title: LABORATORY TEST METHODS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF PROTECTIVE PAINT SYSTEMS
1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 AIM
The aim of this document is to detail laboratory test methods for the assessment of paint systems for the
corrosion protection of onshore steel and iron parts. It also establishes the minimum content and information
that any test report concerning protective paint systems should include, in order to be considered as a
prequalification tool.
1.2 SCOPE
For the approval of a paint system for the use by GAMESA it must comply with the requirements defined by
GAMESA in this document. This document does not apply to paint systems on tower steel sections.
The qualification tests should be performed by a certified (ISO17025) external and independent laboratory by
testing painted test panels according to international standards and/or recommended practices.
A certificate from the manufacturer can be considered for a prequalification of paint systems in order to be
considered for the use by GAMESA. The reports from the manufacturer must unavoidably include the sections
described herein. The report structure shall be independent of the ageing cycles employed, and provide
enough information and a solid base for the prequalification of paint systems. Before the commencement of
any test, the testing entity shall contact a GAMESA M&P authorized representative to clarify any intended
deviation from the parameters demanded in this specification, which shall be agreed in written by both
parties.
3 REFERENCES
This specification incorporates dated or undated reference provisions from other publications. For dated
references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this specification
only when incorporated in it by amendment of revision. For undated references the latest edition of the
publication referred shall be applied.

Minimum size of panels shall be 150 mm x 70 mm x 2 mm. Three panels will be prepared for each test in
order to check reproducibility. Lower number of tested panels may be cause of rejection by GAMESA and the
paint system must not be considered as valid, even, if the test results comply with the requirements
described in this document.
4.2 GENERAL
Table 4.2 describes the tests to be carried out and its duration according to the corrosivity category where
the protective paint system will be exposed.

As a general rule, cross cut test (ISO2409) is not a suitable method for coatings of total thickness greater
than 125 m or for textured coatings. Adhesion of paint systems with thickness greater than 125 m
or textured coatings will be tested according to ISO 4624. For pull-off testing, the minimum number
of determinations shall be six, in accordance with ISO 4624.

Table 4.4 defines artificial ageing methods and acceptance criteria that must be fulfilled for approval of
protective painting systems after the tests defined in section 4.2.

5.2 GENERAL
A protective paint system subject to prequalification shall be described by:
All this information shall be included as shown in 5.2.1 to 5.2.5. The laboratory shall demand to the paint
applicator the information needed to complete the tables and shall reflect any lack of information in the
report. If the paint system has been applied at paint manufacturers factory, or in any external applicator, a
signed copy of the application conditions and the information requested in tables 5.2.1 to table 5.2.5. shall be
provided by the paint applicator

In case of pull off testing (ISO 4624), two determinations shall be made on each panel, and the failure mode
as described in ISO 4624 shall be reported. In case of cross-cut testing (ISO 2409) three determinations shall
be made on each panel, and the results reported according to ISO 2409

*The evaluation of the corrosion creep shall be performed after a complete removal of the coating around
the scribe. The coating shall be removed to reveal non affected areas so the corrosion creep shall be
correctly measured. A complete description of the assessment of corrosion from the scribe line must be
included, with special emphasis on scribing method and tool, scribe dimensions, and method employed for
measuring the corrosion creep (number of measurements and formula).

Title: LABORATORY TEST METHODS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF PROTECTIVE PAINT SYSTEMS
For all the tests performed, a final conclusion must be included to clarify if the paint system is in full
accordance with the requirements in the specified standard (acceptable/ not acceptable)
6 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
6.1 IMAGES
Photographs of the panels, before and after the tests must be included. The photograph or image caption
must clearly include the panel reference, measured values, and exposure conditions. The photographs must
include information about ageing and adhesion tests. Test specimens shall be inspected on a weekly basis
and all the relevant indications photographed and recorded on the test report.
6.2 FINAL REMARKS
The technical staff member and the laboratory manager must sign and certify the results presented in the
report, at the front page or at the end of the document. The laboratory must provide access to the
certifications or credentials granted by accredited certification bodies against international standards.
