THE TEACHER AS AN AGENT OF CHANGE 1

DEVRANI NARINE-GADAR: 04740401

The word teacher is often used to describe a person that imparts knowledge. When

analyzed carefully, though, a teacher ideally acts as an agent of change. Students are placed in a

classroom, and it is the teachers responsibility to transform all students by equipping them with

knowledge and skills that prepares them for life in society.

I was motivated to be an agent of change when I realized the effectiveness of my

influence on the children I interact with. Teachers automatically become role models to their

students and can have either a positive or negative influence, depending on their approach and

attitude.

At Vishnu Boys Hindu College, one of the biggest misconceptions is that our students

(boys) do not require affection while at school. It was in fact the opposite. I recognized that my

students were more receptive in the classroom when they saw not only a teacher in front of them,

but also someone who understood their struggles, who was interested in assisting in whatever

way they can, and who made learning fun. Students appreciate teachers who are approachable

and who they can trust. They view these teachers as persons who genuinely care about their

development, and in turn make a conscious effort to learn.

In the classroom, it has become part of my ritual to get to know all students. This is

accomplished via class discussions, as well as one-on-one interactive sessions. During the

delivery of the class lesson, I also like to mix teaching with humor and entertainment. These

strategies create a more family-like and warm classroom environment, as it reinforces that

academic teaching does not require a rigid class setting. The close-knit class environment also

integrates all students, regardless of their circumstances.

THE TEACHER AS AN AGENT OF CHANGE 2

Pre-diploma in education, I must admit, I seldom employed variations in teaching

strategies as I assumed that all students should understand the lesson content in the manner I

delivered it. This was my biggest misunderstanding. This program opened my eyes to

differentiated learners and the various approaches to teaching and assessment that can be

specifically tailored to meet their needs. I believe that once I am able to effectively deliver

content and skills to all students, and assess them in a manner that reflects their understanding,

then I am progressing as an agent of change.

I do realize the impact I have as a teacher: to positively instill values, skills and

knowledge to students, and shape them into meaningful members of society. In order to be an

effective agent of change, however, I have realized that interacting with students and

understanding their individual needs and circumstances are integral to influencing their

development.

Do you actually have signs that students are changing or is the time frame too short to observe

anything significant?
