Bloody Night at Cebongan Prison

It was an ordinary day for prisoner guards of Cebongan Prison, which is located in
Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. They kept their eyes on the prisoners as they always do all
day long. However, on that day, 22nd of April 2013, they were sent four prisoners from
Yogyakarta. Those four prisoners were accused of killing Heru Santoso, who was a member
of Kopassus Kandang Menjangan, the Indonesian Elite Corps. It was not an ordinary
homicide because the victim was a former trained soldier, but the prisoner guards considered
this case and its suspects were same as their ordinary duties. After they finished the
administration things, they put those suspects together into their cell among other prisoners.
Time passed by, the day reached midnight, and 23rd of April came. Around 01.30 a.m.,
suddenly, one of the prison guards heard someone knocking on the front door. From a small
part of the door to check every visitor who knocks on the door, he saw four men wearing
formal clothes and showed him permission letter from Police Department of Yogyakarta
Region to enter the prison. Before opening the door, this prison guard asked his friend;
I havent been told that police officers from Yogyakarta would come tonight
Me too, it is not usual for us to have visitors at this hour. Is he serious? Another
prison guard responded.
We havent been told that you would
Before finishing speaking, the men outside the door showed his grenades and guns.
They threatened the guard, so the guard didnt have a choice but opened the door. As soon as
the man entered the room, he was followed by some men behind him. All of them were well-
shaped and wore ninjas masks. Moreover, they had lethal weapons with them.
On your knees the attackers said.
It seemed that all prison guards could do nothing. They were forced to get down on
their knees and do what the attackers wanted. Those prison guards who tried to fight back or
not to do the order that had been told to them were stricken by the weapons.
We dont want to hurt you. If you listen to us and do what we want you to do,
everything will be very quick. Dont do anything stupid, unless you want us to take your lives
out of you. One of the attackers frightened them loudly.
Seeing all of them carrying lethal weapon that could directly kill, prison guards only
followed the orders they received. The attackers were shown where the CCTVs database was
kept. They took it. They hope that no one would be able to track them. Then they asked
where the cell of four prisoners that were accused of killing Heru Santoso was.
The key to their cell block is kept by the chief of the prison. One of guards
explained.
Bring me to the chief! One of the attackers asked.
At his office, the chief was shocked when some men entered his room with rifles on
their hands.
Youre the chief? Lets make this quick. Show us the cell of those four prisoners
that were transferred to this prison from Yogyakarta and use your key to open the block. If
you do something stupid, we dont need to explain the consequence, do we? We dont have
mercy, so its better for you to cooperate with us. Ordered the attackers with pointing rifles
at the chief.
The chief had to obey their order. He brought a box full of keys and the attackers had
the key that they had wanted. He showed them the block.
They opened the door. They met a guard inside that block and threatened him. They
wanted him to show the cell they were looking for. That guard showed it.
Open the cell door! The guard opened the cell door.
Those four prisoners and other prisoners in their cells were shocked about what was
happening, and suddenly.
Step back! the attacker said.
The guard stepped back as one man from the attackers came closer to the cell door.
If I mention a name, someone who has it must directly move to the right corner of
this cell and if I stop mentioning the names, others who are not mentioned move to the left
corner. Do what Ive just said or I will kill everyone of you!!
The prisoners were listening and were afraid. They were shaking. They hoped their
names wouldnt be mentioned because they could predict what would happen.
Diki. Juan. Adi. Dedi The man mentioned it one by one and then stopped.
Diki, Juan, Adi, and Dedi were the names of Herus killers. They could do nothing.
They took their steps and walked to the right corner. After they were gathered on the right
corner, the other prisoners moved to the left corner. The man yelled;
All of you killed someone that meant a lot for me, for my best friends that are
launching this raid tonight, and also for people that love him. All of you have to pay. See you
in afterlife.
Then, he pulled his trigger and shot mercilessly the four prisoners. That man was the
executor. The execution was fast. All of those four prisoners were directly killed. Their body
lied down on the floor full of blood. Other prisoners were so afraid. All they could do was
just closing their eyes.
Before they went out from the block, the guard of the block asked;
Those prisoners would be punished in their cell for a long time anyway, so why did
you do this?
One of the attackers turned around to him and said;
Sorry for making you see what we did. If we tell you the reason, we know that you
wont understand. We did this our way.
Then all of the attackers escaped very fast from the prison and disappeared into the
darkness of that night.
All of prisoner guards who were injured got treatment. Military and law enforcements
were shocked with this tragedy. At first, all spokesmen of military and law enforcements
didnt want to accuse the Kopassus members to be behind this tragedy. President of Indonesia
also commanded the authorities to solve this tragedy and find the attackers. However, it
seemed very clear that the attackers were highly trained, so it was difficult to find clues that
pointed to the identities of the attackers. It was an experts work. Considering this fact,
Kopassus members became number one suspects; moreover, Heru Santoso was a member of
them.
The investigation of this tragedy was really serious. Law enforcements tried to collect
evidences and witnesses. Luckily, there were four key witnesses that gave important clues. A
witness saw two faces of the attackers before they wore the masks outside the prison. Other
witness saw their vehicles too. Finally, after long investigation, law enforcements managed to
find the attackers.
All clues pointed to the members of Kopassus Group II Kandang Menjangan
Kartasura. Then the attackers were arrested. Three of the attackers were trained by Heru
Santoso. He was the commander of them, and he was an important person to their lives as
soldiers. They were training at Mount Lawu when they heard that Heru was killed, and as
soon as they heard that he was killed by those four prisoners, they were really angry and
wanted a revenge. They just could not accept that a person who meant a lot to them was
killed brutally. Three of them asked other soldiers to help them. Though some of their friends
tried to hold them, they kept doing the attack and killed those prisoners that had killed a very
special person for them.
Despite the fact they might regret what they have done someday, but it seems that for
them, they have done something that is called justice.
