Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

By Malin Harvey

What Was Unrestricted Submarine Warfare?

It is a type of naval warfare. Naval warfare is combat in and on any major
body of water, such as oceans, wide rivers, large lakes, and seas. Submarines would sink cargo ships such as freighters, and merchant
vessels such as tankers. These attacks would be done without any warning. This doesnt follow the Prize rules. The Germans didnt
follow this law in the first World War. Q-Ships were then built by the British after the RMS Lusitania sank from a German submarine.
The States had requested for the Germans to stop what they were doing, and they did.

What is the Prize rules?

The Prize rules for submarines were that they had to

surface and search the merchantmen. It also required
the crew to be placed in a safe place, before sinking the
ship. If the ship refused visit or search constantly, then
they could be sunk. A Prize is also a term used in
admiralty law that refers to equipment, vehicles, ships,
and also cargo that has been captured during so sort of
armed conflict. Prize was commonly used for the
capture of an enemy ship and the cargo it held.

What is a U-Boat?
A U-boat is actually based off the German word U-boot. U-boot
was a shortening of Unterseeboot, which is practically undersea
boat. Germans used it for practically any submarine as they were also undersea boats. Several other languages referred it to the military
submarines operated by Germany in World War 1 and 2.

The First U-boats. The Brandtaucher

The first U-boat that was built in Germany was the three-man Brandtaucher. It
had sunk to the bottom of Kiel harbor on Febuary 1st, 1851 during a test drive.
The Inventor was Wilhelm Bauer, he designed it in 1850. Schweffel and
Howaldt had built it in 1887.

Q-Boats
There were several names for Q-ships, such as Q-boats, decoy
vessels, special service ships, and mystery ships. Q-ships were
merchant ships that had concealed weapons, and Q-ships were
made to lure submarines to surface and attack. If a submarine
had surfaced, the Q-ships would have a chance to open fire
against them and sink them. The ships were a countermeasure
against U-boats that were inside their shipping routes. The
cargoes that Q-ships contained were light woods or wooden
barrels, meaning if the ship was torpedoed they would still be
afloat. This made U-boats have to surface and sink them with their deck gun. When the U-boat was vulnerable, the
Q-ships deck guns would be revealed as well as the Royal Navy flag would be raised.

liner, until it was sunk by a German Submarine
in World War 1. The Lusitania was a non-
military ship and since it was sunk by the
Germans, many thought they were breaking the
international Cruiser Rules (Also known as the
Prize Rules). The submarines couldnt give
warnings anymore due to the introduction of
Q-ships.

Events
The U-Boat campaign.
The U-boat campaign was in World War 1 from 1914 to 1918. It was a naval campaign that German U-boats fought against the trade
routes of the Allies, and it took place mostly in the seas around the British Isles and around the Mediterranean. Imports for Germany
were food and domestic food production. Imports for the United Kingdom were to feed their population. Both places needed these
imports for their war industry, so they both tried to cut the others supplies.

Mediterranean U-boat campaign.

This was fought in the Mediterranean Sea and it was fought by Austria-Hungary and the German Empire, against the Allies in World
War 1. The Central Powers had lost several substantial shipping loses. The convoy System allowed allies to cut their losses from 1917
onward.

Convoy System.
The convoy system is usually a group of vehicles travelling together. Convoys are organized with armed and defensive support, but
convoys can also be for a non-military sense. An example would be going through remote areas.
