Capstone Project
Hockey
I chose to do my capstone project on hockey, mainly ice hockey, because it
is a sport and hobby that I am very comfortable and familiar with. My family and I
are all very fond of the sport, as well as other family such as my cousins, who ae
the same age as me and we all play together in the minors. I have been playing
organized hockey for 8 years, and plan on playing for as long as I can.
Types of Hockey
There are many different types of hockey, not just on the ice. Some
examples are: floor hockey/ball hockey, field hockey, and many others. There are
also many variations of hockey, such as ringette, and lacrosse. However, ice
hockey is, without a doubt, the most popular of them all, with the majority of
players playing ice hockey.
History
The NHL (National Hockey League) was established in 1917, however
people have participated in outdoor hockey on makeshift ice rinks, or frozen
ponds since the early 1800s. The Stanley Cup, which is and has always been
cherished by the winning team of the Playoffs each year, was created in 1893. It
was named after Lord Stanley of Preston, a Canadian Governor General.
Concussions and other Injuries
Concussions are one of the most common, and most dangerous injuries
that occur to players in the sport. They are dangerous because of the long-term
effects on the brain of the recipient. In the NHL, players like Sidney Crosby, a
tremendous athlete and star player on the ice, has had 4 concussions as of 2017,
and the more concussions someone has, the more dangerous they can be. Other
common injuries include shoulder injuries, knee injuries, neck injuries are also
one of the more serious injuries in the sport.

The first NHL million dollar contract went to Bobby Orr in 1971. It was a
$200,000, five year term contract.
The first goalie to score a goal in the other team's net was goalie Ron
Hextall of the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Zamboni, the machine used on the ice to keep it properly maintained,
was named after Frank Zamboni. He invented the machine in 1949.
The names of twelve women appear on the Stanley Cup. They were either
team executives or owners.
