TELEMEDICINE IN NIGERIA
We bring the Specialist to your door steps
Telemedicine
According to our research, over 60 percent of the Nigerian population currently lives in rural
areas with no access to quality healthcare. Also the doctor-patient ratio is too low in the country;
1:6400 as to 1:600 standard requirement by the World Health Organization (WHO). This ratio is
inadequate to efficiently deliver quality healthcare to the population that needs and deserves it.
Furthermore, the WHO report reveals that 59,000 women die annually from pregnancy and child
birth. That only 39% of births are delivered by skilled health professionals and the risk of a woman
dying from child birth in Nigeria is 1:18, compared to 1:61 for all developing countries and 1:800 in
developed countries.
There is adisproportionate concentration of medical personnel in urban areas because they find
rural areas unattractive, despite huge disease burden such as malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid fever etc.,
leading health experts to believe that significant consequences on the health of inhabitants in the
rural areas worsens due to unavailability of physicians and nurses within close proximity, resulting
to delays or postponing visits to health care facilities until the condition becomes unbearable
Introduction of telemedicine recently in Nigeria provides marginal basic medical services from the
Presidencial National Hospital in Abuja to rural areas hospitals and healthcare facilities. Deficiency
of bandwidth for video conferencing capabilities, innovative specialized medical equipment and
internet connectivity, pose a great challenge in efficiency of the telemedicine service provided.
