IRead the following phrases from different texts below and classify them into Oral
or Written according to the variety of language they belong to. Then, in 2/3 sentences
explain why.
Example: 0. _Oral _ gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight
This text belong to the oral variety because the word gimmerepresents the words give me which
are pronounced informally.
1. Oral we was setting on the front steps, when out comes his aunt polloy with a letter in her
hand and says, Tom, I reckon youve got to pack and go to arkansas , your aunt Sally wants
you well, he says, Im right down sorry, aunt Polly, but I reckon I got to be excused for the
present. Youll be excused!, said aunt Polly angrily and added, If I hear another word out of
you about what youll be excused from and what you wont , I swear to god Illexcuse you on
you Butt with your uncle Bills Belt
This text belongs to the oral variety because it contains several samples of contractions
and many colloquial words. One of this words is excuse which in the context of this
text means to make someone obey by punish/hitting him with a belt.
2. Written Thou art the man cried jakes after a solemn pause, leaning over the cushion.
seventy timers seven times didst thou gapingly contort your visage.
This fragment belong to the written varitey because it uses words that are above the
standar like gapingly contort and visage which means face. Also, it uses
archaisms like thou art and the expression 2seventy times seven times meaning 77
times.
3. Written There was a you prince, lord of all the land, and he found a maiden of indescribable
beauty and delightfulness Love was theirs it was theirs for a year; then suddenly, because
of some venomous sting she died. She died and for a while the prince was utterly prostrated
he did not rend hisgarments as the custom was, for his love was too great for such
extravagance.. Year followed year and he devoted himself to building and adorning the Pearl of
Love.
This is a written type of text or utterance because it vocabulary or lexicon is full of
bookish words like venomous, delightfulness, utterly prostrated, rend garments
and devoted.
4. Oral um, well it was something that happened when I was living in Western Samoa. um,
I rented a house, and, er, my bedroom my bedroom was actually separate, separate from the
rest of the house , and, one night , um, it was quite late. I was lying in bed I was awake, and,
er, my roommate was away at the airport meeting some relatives, and so I was all alone, and
I started hearing noises on the roof of my bedroom. It was a tin roof and um, I heard footsteps
and creaking sounds on the the tin, you know, and an, another noise. I couldnt quite tell what it
was, but it, but it was something strange, and I was scaredreally scaredum, and my
problem was that I, I couldnt get to a phone without unlocking my bedroom door, walking
across the lawn, unlocking the front door, and going into the house. the thought of doing this,
while there was somebody on the roof.[laughs] er, w-was not very, er, possible. So there I
am, lying there, thinking what on earth will I do, and I finally figured that probably the person
there thought there was no one home and was just trying to break in trying to rob the place so I
had a brainwave [laughs] and immediately the person ran across the roof and jumped off, er,
and landed on the lawn. I heard a thud. um, so then I unlocked the door, and went across to the
house, and called the police. Well, they were, they were there, really quickly. I'd say within a
couple of minutes
This one belongs to the oral variety because it makes use of lots of empty words and
sounds like er, so, well and um which represent the speaker is probably trying
to think of what or how he is going to say whats next. Besides, the words used are
colloquial ones

belongs to the oral variety rewrite it into the written variety; if it belongs to the written
variety do otherwise, that is, transcribe it into the oral variety. Use the 3rd person
