Tutorial Sheet 1: MATH3121

This document provides a summary of tutorial problems related to mathematical methods and partial differential equations. Problem 1 asks students to use Fourier's method to solve the 1D wave equation to determine the motion of a stretched metal bar over time. Problem 2 asks students to apply similarity solutions to boundary value problems involving heat/diffusion equations and the nonlinear Burgers' equation.

1. Revision Solution of the wave equation by Fouriers Method

A long metal bar is initially stretched by tensile forces at its ends.

At time t = 0, the forces are removed.
The aim of this problem is to determine the subsequent motion of the bar.
You are given that the longitudinal displacement u(x,t) in the rod satisfies the 1-D wave
equation
2u 2 u
2
= c .
t 2 x 2
The initial displacement in the stretched rod is given by
u ( x,0) = Ax
and the rod is initially at rest.
Once the forces at the ends have been removed, the boundary conditions are
u
(0, t ) = u (L, t ) = 0 .

2. Similarity Solutions
Try and apply the Similarity solution method to the following boundary value problems for u ( x, t ) .

In the cases where it doesnt work, say why, and where it does work derive (but do not solve) the
ordinary differential equation for the similarity solution.

i. ut = ku xx for all x > 0 with boundary conditions

u x (0, t ) = 1,
u ( x, t ) 0 as x ,
and u ( x,0) = 0 for x > 0.
ii. ut = ku xx + u x for all x > 0 with boundary conditions
u x (0, t ) = 1,
u ( x, t ) 0 as x ,
and u ( x,0) = 0 for x > 0.
iii. ut = ku xx for all x > 0 with boundary conditions

u (0, t ) = sin t ,
u ( x, t ) 0 as x ,
and u ( x,0) = 0 for x > 0.
iv. utt = c 2u xx for a < x < b

u (a, t ) = 1,
u (b, t ) = 0,
and u ( x,0) = u x ( x,0) 0 for a < x < b.

v. ut = uu xx , x>0
u x (0, t ) = 1,
u ( x, t ) 0 as x ,
and u ( x,0) = 0 for x > 0.
