Welcome to Developmental Kindergarten
Social Development
A large portion of our energy will be spent building and developing appropriate social
interactions. We want all students to feel safe and confident. We will work toward building
empathy and interacting appropriately with other students and adults in the school setting.
Safe and courteous behavior is part of our building behavior code. It is important to be able to
listen, follow directions, and follow through. Working toward cleaning up messes we make is a
daily focus. The ability to persevere and complete tasks is also important at school. It is also
imperative that all students develop autonomy in their ability to care for their own needs such
as dressing, bathroom routines, and hygiene. All of these are practiced and developed
authentically through play, which is one of the many reasons why free choice time is
incorporated in our daily schedule

Fine and Gross Motor Development


We will provide many opportunities for students to be successful with fine motor skills as well
as large motor skills. We will attend physical education class 2 or 3 times each week as well as
enjoy outdoor recess twice a day. We expect all children to participate in these opportunities
with the appropriate shoes for the gym floor and appropriate clothing for any type of weather.
In the coldest winter months we will provide indoor opportunities to move and stretch and
release energy.
We will also work to improve the muscle strength and control necessary for handwriting and
cutting skills. We hope families will work toward the goal of tying shoes when children are
ready. Until that time, please consider Velcro shoes and winter clothing and boots that they
are able to put on independently.

Language Arts
This year we will focus on building a love for reading. We will expect all students to know their
letters, both upper case and lower case. We will work to know all letter sounds, including the
most common vowel sounds. We will work on correct letter formation and reading and writing
simple words. Proper name formation is a goal for the students. Students will be able identify
and produce rhymes and identify syllable counts in words. Our reading focus will include
appropriate listening skills, the ability to retell familiar stories (or information from a non-
fiction source) with appropriate oral speaking skills, answering questions, and respectful use of
and care for books. Our writing focus will include oral storytelling, drawing pictures to show a
story, and adding words to the picture to complete the story.
Math
Our math focus will begin with number identification (0-10) and numeracy concepts. The goal
for the end of the year is for all students to count to 50 with an understanding of the number
sense behind the counting. We will work toward 1 to 1 correspondence to 20. Proper number
formation (0-9) will be practiced. We will sort by attributes including color, size, and shape.
We will identify 2D shapes and 10 colors and use them and other attributes to form patterns.
We will also work on position words and concepts as well. Measurement and graphing concepts
will be introduced.

Science
Our science focus will be weather, seasons, living and growing things. In the fall we will learn
about the life cycle of a pumpkin. In the winter we will learn about sinking and floating objects
in water, and magnets. We will also learn about our five senses. In the spring we will learn
about shadows and light as well as healthy bodies and healthy food choices. We will grow plants
and learn about insects.

Social Studies
Developmental Kindergarten works to develop social studies concepts each and every day. From
community building to understanding the world around us, these students will have multiple
opportunities. Building and maintaining friendships, understanding families, understanding safe
behaviors, becoming empathetic to the needs of others, and major holidays will all be covered
this year.
