Assignment 4 For PHYS122 (Mechanics For Engineers) Due Date: October 9 (At The Start of Class)

This document provides the assignment details for PHYS122 (Mechanics for Engineers) that is due on October 9 at the start of class. It includes 4 physics problems to solve from the 7th edition of the Serway and Jewett textbook. The first problem asks about static and kinetic friction coefficients for a physics book on a car seat during braking. The second asks about the force exerted on the book by the seat during a 45m braking distance from 20m/s.

Assignment 4 for PHYS122 (Mechanics for Engineers)

Due date: October 9 (at the start of class)

Problem numbers refer to the 7th edition (or 6th edition) of Serway and Jewett.

1. Problem 5.32 (Problem 5.34)

2. Your 3:80 kg physics book is next to you on the horizontal seat of your car. the
coe cient of static friction between the book and the seat is 0:650, and the coe cient
of kinetic friction is 0:550. Suppose you are travelling at 72 km h 1 = 20 m s 1 and
brake to stop over a distance of 45:0 m.

(a) Will the book start to slide over the seat?

(b) What force does the seat exert on the book in this process?

3. Problem 5.42 (Problem 5.44)

4. Problem 5.44 (Problem 5.46)
