MY COUNTRY - BULGARIA
I. Geography - Bulgaria is situated on the Balkan Peninsula in
Southeastern Europe. The country borders by Romania on
the north, Serbia and Macedonia on the west, by Greece and
Turkey on the south, and it is about on the Black Sea on the
east.
II. Population There are about 7 million people in Bulgaria.
Most of them are Bulgarians, but there are some Turkish,
Armenian and Roma people who live in Bulgaria.
III. Flag it consists of three equal-sized horizontal bands of
white, green, and red. White represents peace and
liberty, green symbolizes their freedom and
agricultural wealth, and red stands for shed
blood in the name of freedom.
IV. Currency the lev is the currency of Bulgaria. It is devided
in 100 stotinki. The word lev means lion in archaic
Bulgarian. Bulgaria, as a part of the European Union will
adopt the Euro in 2013.
V. History - Bulgaria was established in 681 by Khan Asparuh.
The state of Bulgaria has 1300 years old history, Bulgaria is
the first Slavic nations that adopted Christianity.
Bulgaria was once one of the 3 biggest empires in Europe.
In its modern history it never lost a battle and never lost a
flag, captured by its enemies' armies. Bulgaria gave birth to
numerous scientists, artists, and athletes and is one of the
most beautiful countries in the world.
VI. Culture - Bulgarian festivals and customs date back to
ancient times. One of the most famous festivals are Fire
dancing, the Festival of Roses, the Kukeri carnival and
many others. Bulgarian folk music is unique and famous all
over the world. Only Bulgarians wear martenitsaon the 1st
of March. This symbolizes the coming of spring and is an
old custom. Many foreigners come to Bulgaria to study its
culture, music and festivals.
