This exhibition not only conveys the life and works of Michael Haydn (1737–1806), it also highlights the
ever-changing circumstances of life in those times – from the era of Archbishop Sigismund (1753-1771), to
the secularization of the Salzburg archbishopric (1803), which was accompanied by war, occupation and
famine.
At the centre of the exhibition stands Haydn, the man. Unlike Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, however, he was
able to create an ideal milieu for himself.
Theatrically presented information, enhanced by sound, color and pictures, invites exhibition visitors to
actively come to terms with the objects on display.

On June 1, 2007, the new “Salzburg Museum” opens in the magnificently renovated, around 400 years-old
"palazzo nuovo" located on Mozart Square in the heart of Salzburg’s Old City.

"The Salzburg Mythos"

2
housed on the 2nd floor of the Neue Residenz – on more than 3,000 m of exhibition space – visitors will be
able to view a new permanent exhibition focusing on the cultural history of Salzburg: from the prince
archbishops, who ruled over this small, though important principality until 1803, to the small city of the
Middle Ages, to the magnificent Baroque city which now counts itself as a jewel of World Cultural Heritage.
Paintings by romantic painters of the early 19th century, allow us to grasp the “Salzburg Mythos” which,
together with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, provided a point of departure for the development of Salzburg as
a tourism and festival hub.

"Salzburg in person"
The first floor is dedicated entirely to interesting Salzburg personalities, including artists, architects,
scientists, literary greats, musicians and photographers, both past and present, whose biographies, works
and impact are illuminated through rotating exhibitions.

Special Exhibitions
In the Art Hall on the lower floor, a series of rotating exhibitions will take place. There are several large
areas for special exhibitions, one of which is focused on the valuable pre-historic and Roman
archaeological finds, including such highlights as a Celtic beaked jug from the Dürrnberg, the Bronze Age
helmet from Pass Lueg, and Austria’s only Roman wall, with paintings dating from about 100 AD
