The catacombs carved into the Mönchsberg are early Christian in origin. They lie hidden in the wall of the
Mönchsberg. The entrance may be found in the cemetery.
This exhibition not only conveys the life and works of Michael Haydn (1737–1806), it also highlights the
ever-changing circumstances of life in those times – from the era of Archbishop Sigismund (1753-1771), to
the secularization of the Salzburg archbishopric (1803), which was accompanied by war, occupation and
famine.
At the centre of the exhibition stands Haydn, the man. Unlike Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, however, he was
able to create an ideal milieu for himself.
Theatrically presented information, enhanced by sound, color and pictures, invites exhibition visitors to
actively come to terms with the objects on display.
