Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)

A Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) combines biological wastewater treatment with membrane filtration for solid-liquid separation. MBRs use a membrane such as microfiltration or ultrafiltration instead of sedimentation for solid-liquid separation. MBRs have advantages over conventional activated sludge including higher biomass concentrations, smaller footprints, and simpler operation.

Advantages of MBR over Conventional Activated
Sludge Process
- Complete rejection of suspended solids.
- Higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) (>8 g/L).
- Smaller footprint (< 6hr for biological nutrient removal).
- Smaller sludge production.
- Simple monitoring parameters (e.g. transmembrane
pressure (TMP) ).
