History of

Photography
Timeline
By Tyson Brent and Cannon Norton
Earliest Known Photograph

The earliest known photograph was taken by Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1826 or 1827. The
image is of the view from an upstairs window at Niepces house.
Origins of the Term Photography

The word Photography originated from Greek roots , meaning (phtos) and the other root
word , meaning (graph) giving us photograph, the word photo means light and graph means
drawing (light drawing) so the word photograph actually means drawing with light. This word was first
being used in the early 1800s around 1839.
Calotype

Calotype was invented in the 1830s by a man named William Henry Fox Talbot. Calotype is
paper coated with silver chloride so when the camera takes the photo, the light creates a
negative outcome creating a photo that looks like the one below.
Daguerreotype

This was the first commercially successful photographic process in the history of photography.
This was named after the inventor by the name of Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre. This is a
unique type of photo on a silver copper plate. This image is detailed and sharp. This was used
from 1839-1860.
Wet Collodion Process

Wet Collodion Process is the process of adding soluble iodide to a solution of collodion and
then coating a glass plate with mixture. This was invented by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851.
This replaced both of the daguerreotype and calotype processes. The photos were valued
because the transparency of the glass produced a high resolution of detail in both the
highlights and shadows of the pictures.
Color Photography

Color photography is what we all know as photos with color. The first ability to capture color in
a photo came from a minister in New York named Levi Hill. Many thought Hill was a liar
because of the process he used for the photograph in 1856, but in 2007 researchers came to
conclusion that his method indeed capture some color.

Dry Plate Photography

This is also known as the gelatin process. This was a lot better than the wet collodion process.
Dry Plate photography was created in 1871 by R.L. Maddox.
Kodak Roll Film Camera

This was invented in 1888 by George Eastman. The slogan was You press the button - we do
the rest!. This was the birth of snapshot photography. The camera placed the power of
photography in the hands of anyone who could press the button.
Kodachrome Film

Kodachrome is one of the first kinds of color materials to work. Kodachrome is used in still
photography and cinematography. In 1935 a man by the name of Eastman Kodak introduced
Kodachrome film. This kind of Photography and film is still used in today's society.
Polaroid Instant Photography

This type of photography was invented by Edward H. Land. Mr. Land dropped out of Harvard
freshman year so he could conduct scientific investigations of applying polarizing light filters. In
1943, Lands daughter asked why she cant see the picture he just took of her and that day he
thinks of the idea of an instant camera. On February 21, 1947 Land announces his invention of
the instant picture process. The Model 95 Land camera was sold on November 26, 1948. This
becomes the Polaroid camera model.
First Digital Camera

The first digital camera was built by a man at Eastman Kodak named Steve Sasson, the first
digital camera was built in December 1975 but these cameras were not available for purchase
until 1888. This amazing new camera was called Kodak because of the Eastman Kodak
company that the camera was built under.
Most Modern Camera

The Fujifilm X-T2 is the most modern camera today.
