OET, known as Occupational English Test measures the English speaking abilities of the test takers in

healthcare settings with a major focus on communication skills. There are four major modules on which
English communication skills of the test takers are assessed in the OET test. These are Listening,
Reading, Writing and Speaking. OET is specially designed for the healthcare professionals who are
aiming to practice in an English-speaking country. The purpose of the OET reading sub-test is to assess
the reading abilities of the test takers. This section measures the ability of the test takers to read,

1. Practice reading under timed conditions: You may be told to practice reading before the OET test. But
it is to be noted that there is a difference between reading in general and reading under timed conditions.
Since OET reading is a time bound task, therefore reading under timed conditions would help you train your
brain accordingly. This would give you good practice in identifying the writers line of argument and attitude.
2. Focus on paragraphs Focusing on short sections of paragraphs is a useful way to develop your reading
skills for the OET test. You can read the short sections, pause and find what the main point in the paragraph
is and what does the writer want to achieve in the paragraph. This would help you understand the paragraph
clearly.
3. Use different skills for each part: The OET reading sub-test is designed in such a way that various skills
of the test takers are assessed in it. Therefore, the golden rule to get high grades on the OET reading
section is to use different skills for each part. The quicker you can locate the text you need, the more time
you have to understand it correctly.
4. Check your work- Manage your time in such a way that you get some time at the end to review your work.
Review if your summary is making sense and if it is reflecting the information that the texts convey. If your
summary does not make sense and reflects the irrelevant information, it may require changes. Therefore,

5. Get help- We advise candidates to get help from someone who is experienced and has taken the OET test

How to Write Answers for OET Reading Sub-test?


The candidates are required to write their answers in the numbered boxes in the Part A. In Part B, the
candidates are required to write their answers on the special answer sheet using a pencil. This is so;
because these answer sheets will be computer-scanned for maximum accuracy. No extra time will be
given at the end to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

Is it necessary to write answers in order?


Yes, it is necessary to write answers in the correct spaces on the test paper. You can use sample tests to
become familiar with the different task formats. For security reasons, candidates cannot amend their
answers. The reading sub-test papers are marked under normal procedures.

Are candidates given extra time to check their answers?


No, candidates are not given extra time at the end of the sub-test to check their answers. It is up to them
to manage their time. The OET reading sub-test is designed in such a way that candidates get enough
time to read, choose their answers and check their work.

Are abbreviations allowed in the OET reading sub-test?


Abbreviations are not accepted in the OET reading sub-tests. One can use them if they appear in the
texts.

Is there any mark deduction for spelling mistakes?


Yes, you must use correct spelling in the OET reading sub-test to get the desired marks. Responses
spelled incorrectly will not receive any marks. British and American spelling variations are both
acceptable.
