The key takeaways are that AC drives convert constant line voltage and frequency to adjustable voltage and frequency to control the speed of AC motors. Main components include rectifiers, inverters, control interfaces and motors. Common control methods are scalar (V/f), vector and direct torque control.

The main components of an AC drive are the rectifier, inverter, motor, control interface and cables. The rectifier converts AC to DC, the inverter converts DC back to AC of adjustable voltage and frequency to control the motor speed.

An AC drive controls the speed of a motor by adjusting the output voltage and frequency delivered to the motor. Common control methods mentioned are scalar (simple V/f), vector (field oriented) and direct torque control (ABB exclusive). Vector control provides the fastest response.

Applications of AC Drives(VFD)
Variable Frequency Drive ( VFD ):

An adjustable frequency AC drive converts an input line

constant voltage and frequency to an adjustable voltage
and frequency output .

Normally speed and current control are provided.

More sophisticated drives also provide torque control.

IGBT Rectifier

Best is to use an IGBT rectifier.

IGBT can be switched off if the current starts to grow.
It is full regenerative
It can boost the motor voltage when line voltage is low.
The power factor is 1
Current harmonics are lower due to higher switching frequency.

U-
Thyristor bridge in motoring

We study how U+ (DC) voltage is developed.

Thyristors are controlled to diode mode( Fully fired ) so the bridge
always selects the highest of AC voltages (U,V,W) for U+
Anyway line inductance L slows down the transfer of current from
phase to phase. This transfer is called commutation.

U-
Thyristor bridge in generating

In generating mode the DC bridge is supporting the current so if the

AC voltage disappears, the current will grow high.
A Thyristor cannot be turned of by control, so it will continue
conducting and the current will increase until the the fuses interrupt
the current.

U-
Improving commutation

Risk for problems can be reduced by higher AC voltage. This gives

more margin for commutation. The alternatives:
The infeed transformer can be selected to give e.g. 20 % higher
voltage.
There can be an autotransformer in the converter boosting the
generating bridge voltage by 20 %

AC drives are the most eco-efficient products we know of

During the past ten years, ABB AC Drives have been reducing
energy consumption in pumps and fans by about 46 TWh every year.
This corresponds to 38 million tons less CO2 emissions per year.
