DISCUSSION

The Environmental Laboratory is the practice in the solution of problems of

environment in the environmental engineering field. All of the experiment that had been held is
to find the solution or to find out the quality of the environment especially the water quality,
because in this laboratory the test of water was the main experiment that are done.

For the experiment, there are 5 different experiment that have been done, and we will
go through one-by-one, for an example the first experiment. The Sampling method, this
experiment is to find any pollutants for river water. Maybe, there is slightly error in the result
because of the sample or while using the equipment. The second experiment is Biochemical
oxygen demand or BOD. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is defined as a measurement of the
amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) that is used by aerobic microorganisms when decomposing
organic matter in water. The experiment result we obtained is consistent with the theory given
in which the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is getting higher if there are a lot of
microorganism in the water sample. From the result, we can see that the lower the dilution
factor would increase the amount of BOD.

The third experiment is, Total Suspended Solid or TSS. The test must be undertaken with
caution because we dealing with high temperature furnace, and oven which all of that can
cause harms. Always wear a thick glove when dealing with the furnace and use clamp to hold
the filter paper. Next experiment is Bacteria count. The plate count method relies on bacteria
growing a colony on a nutrient medium so that the colony becomes visible to the naked eye
and the number of colonies on a plate can be counted.

The last experiment is Jar Test. Jar tests have been used to evaluate the effectiveness of
various coagulants and flocculants under a variety of operating conditions for water treatment.
This procedure allows individual polymers to be compared on such criteria as floc formation,
settling characteristics, and clarity.
Conclusion

At the end of this laboratory, we can acknowledge the test or experiment that have to
be use to describe the water quality. And also find the way to increase and maintain the water
quality. All of the experiment that have been done are helping us a lot to understanding the
Environmental Engineering that we learned in the lecture class. For an example, we have
learned about the Jar test in the class, and we know about the theory and the calculation
needed in Jar test. But after doing it in the laboratory, we have gain full understanding on how
the jar test been conducted including the procedure of the jar test and how the floc was
formed.
As the conclusion, this environmental laboratory helps us to gain knowledge and to
understanding the about the Environmental Engineering. From all of the experiment we can
conclude that the water quality is important. And the experiment helps us to understand the
procedure of the test to know the water quality.
