2 Overview
A UMTS base station is easily affected by signals from GSM, road light or big LED
screen in the uplink direction. This is especially obvious if the base station operates at
900M band. Due to interference, RTWP rises, SNR decreases, base station coverage
shrinks, HSUPA throughput decreases and drop call rate increases.
Narrow Band Interference Cancellation (NBIC) feature is introduced to deal with the
interference problem. This happens when narrow strong band interference signal exists
with stable frequency and amplitude. This NBIC feature can effectively reduce uplink
RTWP, enhance uplink radio coverage, increase cell UL traffic throughput and improve
relevant KPIs. Furthermore, it can effectively reduce the interference on UMTS from
GSM when GSM and UMTS coexist.

3 Technical Description
UMTS is a wideband code division multiple access system. Its in-band waveform is
relatively flat. If narrow band interference signal exists nearby, peak can be seen from
the UMTS in-band spectrum. After enabling this feature, e.g. set ULocalCell.enableNBIC
to be 1, the system works in this way. First, Node B RF module scans in-band carrier
frequency. Second, it quick identifies the relatively stable narrow band. After that, it
dynamically configures a band-stop filter. This band-stop filter can filter out UE signal and
interference signal, falling in this narrow band. Finally, narrow band interference signal is
suppressed.
This NBIC feature can suppress the interference signal with the following attributes:
The working principle, used to select and handle to-be-suppressed frequency range, is
described as follow. First, the system collects spectrum sample. Second, it identifies
which sample point has the largest amplitude within the UMTS bandwidth. The sample
point is associated to a frequency point. The system takes this frequency point as a
center, sets a 400KHz narrow band around it, then filters all useful signals and
interference signal, which fall in this narrow band. For each spectrum sample, only one
frequency point is handled. Signals from primary and diversity channels are handled
separately.
The NBIC feature can effectively reduce the interference on UMTS. After interference
suppression, uplink RTWP decreases. The suppression effect depends on interference
strength and bandwidth distribution.

6 Engineering Guide
This feature is applicable to the scenario that narrow band interference signal exists in a
cell. This interference signal has the following attributes:
After enabling this feature, interference is suppressed and cell RTWP decreases. The
suppression effect depends on interference strength and bandwidth distribution.
This section describes the location of related parameters in GUI. To be mentioned that
the values shown in the following pictures may be different from real configured values.
The real values are defined in relevant parameter list.
Enable this feature. In the configuration resource tree, select Modify Area -> Managed
Element -> Radio Parameter -> UMTS -> UMTS Sector -> Local Cell. Set parameters as
shown below.
