CLARK SHINES IN ASEAN 2017

T he Clark International Airport was given its time to
shine as the airport played a major role during the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit
in November 2017, serving eight of the 10 ASEAN Heads
of State that came to the Philippines for the 31st ASEAN
Summit and Related Summits landed at the Clark airport.
The summits were held in the country as the
Philippines was the ASEAN 2017 chairman. The event
also coincides with a historic milestone — the 50th
anniversary of the founding of the association, and
described as “an occasion to set the tone for the next 50
years.”
Founded in 1967, ASEAN has since matured
into a community focused on economic integration
and growth, and consensus-building, which has been
described as “the ASEAN Way” that has resulted in
unprecedented growth, ASEAN being both the world’s
seventh-largest market and third-largest labor force,
and has been projected to become the fourth-largest
economic bloc by 2030.

Andana Resort, Guimaras Province

St. Thomas of Villanova (Miag-Ao) Church, a Heritage Site

The City of Love Andana Resort, Guimaras Province

T
The Molo Mansion he Central Philippines is known for its beaches, colorful festivals, scenic tourist
destinations, famous personalities, heritage and history. And one of the provinces
worth visiting as it features most, if not all, is the Province of Iloilo.
Residents from Northern and Central Luzon can now appreciate the rich
heritage and history of Iloilo, one of the provinces in the Western Visayas, with an
hour-long flight from the Clark International Airport thanks to AirAsia Philippines.
Iloilo takes its name from Irong-Irong, the old name of the city of Iloilo, a tract
of land that sticks out like a nose on the south of the Iloilo River. The Maragtas
Legend tells the story of Iloilo way back in the 13th century, when Datu Puti and his
fellow Datus fled from the tyranny of Sultan Makatunao of Borneo and landed at the
mouth of the Siwaragan River, now known as the town of San Joaquin, and eventually
Molo Feminine Church
settled there.
Also known as the “City of Love” because of its location in the “Heart of the
Philippine archipelago”, Iloilo has always been one of the country’s most important
provinces, with the Ilonggos having long traded with merchants from China and India
even before the Spaniards came, resulting in a flourishing civilization that is exhibited
in various museums and private galleries in the province. Iloilo proved an important
trading post because of its beautiful harbor with serene and calm waters safe for
navigation. This excellent port facility made Iloilo the center of trade at the turn of
the century, with the whole world doing business in this port, especially during the
heyday of the sugar industry. In fact, Iloilo was given the title of “Queen City of the
South” for being the Philippine’s second city, after Manila.
Iloilo’s history can be seen in its European and American-inspired buildings:
stately mansions, majestic century-old churches, and heritage commercial buildings
while its rich heritage is showcased in diverse festivals celebrated in the city and
various towns of the province, earning for Iloilo the moniker “The Province of
Festivals“.
Ilonggos are particularly proud of their nationally-acclaimed Dinagyang Festival,
together with smaller but similarly riveting festivities in the province that blend the
pagan and Christians in a street dance masquerade honoring the Sto. Nino.
A tour of Iloilo City, the provincial capital, will treat tourists, foreign and
domestic alike, on a ride in a time machine as the guide takes them back to the
province’s historic past to the present.

And, of course, a tour of such a historic place would not be complete without a
visit to the various churches, old houses of illustrious families, museums, and popular
places to partake of the local fare, read: food.
Iloilo’ churches have been described by our tour guide as “fighting churches” as
these have been designed, along with five watchtowers on the Guimbal shoreline, to
ward off raiding Moro pirates and invaders.
Some of these actually are unique in the sense that they have features that can
only be seen in that part of the country.
The Miag-Ao Church, or the Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church, for
example, is said to be the only church in the country that has been allowed by the
Spanish to depict the daily lives of the people of Miag-Ao on its pediment, making it
distinctly Filipino by featuring a coconut tree, banana tree, papaya tree and native
fauna.
The Miag-Ao Church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a distinction it shares in an
exclusive group of very few Baroque-style churches in the country.
Another is the San Joaquin Parish Church that features a pediment depicting a
military scene: the victory of the Spanish over the Moors in the Battle of Tetouan in
remarkable detail. Photo by Lyn P. Sanchez
The Molo Church, or the Church of Saint Anne, is also called the Church of
Women. Like the San Joaquin and Miag-Ao churches, it is unique because the images A look at Old Iloilo
of saints in the church are all female.
Iloilo boasts of a list of “Firsts” in the country that include: the site of the first
Malayan landing in the country according to the Maragtas Legend; the site of the first
school for boys in Tigbauan founded by the famous Jesuit priest and historian Pedro
Chirino in 1592; the first place in the country to put up a Christian church; the first city
outside Manila to have a foreign business house, Loney and Co.; and reportedly the
first city outside Manila to have electricity, telephone, telegraph, railway, ice plant,
automobile and other modern conveniences, among others.

Iloilo Public Market A heritage tour of the province takes one to Calle Real, Iloilo City’s old
central business district as well as Plaza Libertad and the Iloilo Provincial Capitol
Grounds and the city’s ancestral houses that include the Molo Mansion, and the
house of former Philippine Vice-President Fernando Lopez Sr., Casa Mariquit,
among others.
Of course, after a tour of history, hungry tourists can partake of the culinary
specialties of Iloilo: the famous La Paz Batchoy; Pancit Molo; and a feast at the
Camina Balay nga Bato where we had dinner and coffee or hot chocolate at
Madge Coffee at the public market.
The famous La Paz Batchoy at Netong’s
The trip to Iloilo has one perk that will interest tourists: they can take a tour
of neighboring Guimaras Province via a 15-minute boat ride.
Known for having the sweetest mangoes in the world according to a Brix
scale that determines sugar concentration, our guide said Guimaras’s mangoes
are in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the sweetest mangoes in the
world and are the only mangoes allowed to be exported to the US and served at
the White House and in the UK, being served at the Buckingham Palace.
With over 250,000 mango trees in 600 square-kilometer Guimaras, there
would be no shortage of mangoes in the province for tourists.
Tourists can get really close and take pictures of the 27 wind turbines that
power the province as well as bask in the sun in the beautiful Andana Resort
which is already open but according to its developers, is still a work in progress.
So what are you waiting for? Book your flights now with AirAsia Philippines
and explore Iloilo and Guimaras provinces in the Western Visayas.
AirAsia files from the Clark International Airport in the Clark Freeport Zone
in Pampanga to the Iloilo International Airport every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
and Sunday.
AirAsia Philippines also flies to Davao (DVO) six times a week; Boracay via
the Caticlan Airport (MPH) four times a week; Kalibo (KLO) and Tacloban (TAC)

HOW CLARK
WAS THEN
BY JOJO C. DUE

T hese photographs show that before it became

the busy “Airport of the North,” the Clark
International Airport (CRK) started life as part of a
US military base. Established in 1901, the following
years since have seen Clark, then known as the

Clark Air Force Base, grow to become the biggest
US military facility outside the US mainland and a
bastion of US military might in Southeast Asia.
Since its turnover to the Philippine government
following the abrogation of the RP-US Bases Treaty
and the eruption of Pinatubo volcano in 1991,
the baseland in shambles gradually transformed
into the dynamic and progressive Clark Freeport
Zone that now employs more than 100,000 civilian
employees, has billions of dollars in investments,
and home to the busy gateway that is the Clark
airport.
