This training provides parents with the tools to advocate for their children in the
special education process. Learn about the law that protects your child in the
education system.

The Six Principles of IDEA/Special Education Training will provide an overview

of IDEA (Individual with Disabilities Education Act), Evaluation, Individualized
Education Program (IEP), Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), and
Procedural Safeguards.

Matt will combine 30 plus years experience advocating for children and adults
with disabilities and as a parent will share insights into transition planning,
services and the real world challenges of parenting a young adult with a
disability.

"Person Centered Planning and Systems Transformation"
Director Greg Fenton, DHS and Person Centered Planning Panel

Director Fenton will share the Division of Developmental Disabilities' continued

vision for person centered planning. A panel consisting of an advocate, family
member, service provider and an independent service coordination agency will
share their experiences and efforts to work together to fulfill the potential of the
person centered planning process. We will hear from the individual and family
perspective how person centered planning can help deliver the services people
want and need. Q and A to follow.

"State Medicaid Changes Impacting People with Disabilities"
Kristin Hartsaw and Sherri Schneider

Recently there have been a lot of changes to Medicaid processes happening

at the state level, which are affecting how individuals with disabilities and
families are dealing with benefits. Listen to two experts, Sherri Schneider,
Family Benefits Solutions, and Kristin Hartsaw, DuPage Federation, discuss
some of the changes to Medicaid including redetermination processes, online
portals, AABD vs ACA Medicaid categories, Medicaid Managed Care and

Parent Advocacy Training for Legislative
Change
Family Resource Center on Disabilities (FRCD) and the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are offering a
FREE training to parents and family members of
children with disabilities.

The purpose of this program is to educate and empower parents of children

with disabilities about legislative advocacy. The training will enable you to:

* Participate in the legislative process to change special education policy.

* Become more comfortable speaking to legislators and sharing concerns.
* Develop an understanding of special education policy and practice.

Your participation in this training will build your advocacy skills and provide
important feedback that can help guide, expand, and strengthen special
education policy. In addition to attending the training, participants will be

required to:

* Participate in a focus group to share concerns about special education

legislation.
* Complete three surveys to document the effectiveness of the training.
* Be videotaped (less than three minutes) to share your concerns about special
education legislation. Your participation is voluntary and your responses will be
kept confidential.
