CFM56-7B COMMERCIAL ENGINE SERVICE MEMORANDUM No.005 REVISION 3

SUBJECT: FAN DISK AND FAN ROTOR BLADE – ON-WING PERIODIC MAINTENANCE ACTION

September 09, 2005

This page transmits Revision 3 to CFM56-7B CESM No.005 dated May 02, 2000,
Revision 1 dated April 4, 2002 and Revision 2 dated March 25, 2005.

This Commercial Engine Service Memorandum has been revised to clarify its purpose
and avoid potential inconsistency in the accomplishment instructions. The Engine
Shop Manual and the Aircraft Maintenance provide the appropriate instructions to
perform the parts removal, cleaning, inspection, lubrication and installation.
Accordingly, these instructions have been deleted from CESM.

The vertical dash in the left-hand margin indicates change. A change, which does
not affect technical content, may not be highlighted in the Transmittal Sheet.

This Commercial Engine Service Memorandum is reissued in its entirety.

ENGINES MODEL: ALL COMMERCIAL CFM56-7B
ENGINE MODELS
SECTION/No: MAINTENANCE No. 005
SUBJECT: FAN DISK AND FAN ROTOR
BLADE – ON-WING PERIODIC
MAINTENANCE ACTION

1. DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT

Lack of lubricant at Fan Blades / Fan Disk interface may lead to excessive
wear on the fan disk dovetail pressure faces, and on the fan blade root
thermal sprayed coating. In addition, lack of lubricant can also be the
cause for increased vibration levels.

2. PURPOSE

The purpose of this CESM is to recommend a periodic on-wing maintenance

action. Periodic cleaning, inspection and lubrication of the fan blades and
fan disk allow to reduce maintenance cost by reducing the wear on these
parts, and by reducing variation in engine fan vibration levels.

3. EFFECTIVITY

This CESM applies to all commercial CFM56-7B engine models and is addressed
to all commercial CFM56-7B operators.

4. DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATION

CFM International recommends the following on-wing maintenance action to be

taken on all installed engines at periodic intervals, or when excessive low
pressure rotor vibration level is encountered. The task interval or
threshold may be adjusted by each operator based on its own aircraft
maintenance program taking into account the CFM maximum recommended
interval of 3000 flight cycles or 5000 flight hours whichever comes
first.

NOTE: The recommended interval is based on CFM experience to date. Please

report results so that improvements can be shared with all operators.

A. Remove and clean the fan blades and associated hardware per Boeing
737-600/700/800/900 Aircraft Maintenance Manual section 72-21-01
(Spinner cones – Removal/Installation) and 72-21-02 instructions (fan
blade–Removal/Installation).

B. Inspect the fan rotor blades and associated hardware per Boeing
737-600/700/800/900 Aircraft Maintenance Manual section 72-21-01
(Spinner cones – Inspection/check) and 72-21-02 instructions (fan
blades – Inspection/check). For the fan disk dovetail slot pressure
face inspection for wear, refer to the Service Bulletin 72-0525
instructions.

C. Lubricate and install the fan rotor blades and associated hardware per
Boeing 737-600/700/800/900 Aircraft Maintenance Manual section 72-21-02
instructions (fan blades – Removal/Installation).
